For a while, I’ve been wanting a leatherette tablecloth. I tend to use regular fabric tablecloths, and they get really dirty, and make guests feel awful when they spill something on it.

But I’m NOT about to put a tacky vinyl one on my table.

Not only that, but I like to leave a table cloth on my table most of the time, for the simple reason that my table itself is an eyesore.

Leatherette vinyl is the perfect way around that dilemma. But I couldn’t find a leatherette tablecloth that I liked either. So I decided to make one.

Fabric.com sent me this beautiful leatherette and fringe to create this project for you. I chose this leatherette because I like the rich, natural color, along with the patchwork texture. It has a flannel backing so it’s almost ready to use. The color goes brilliantly with my copper and natural wood serve-ware.

I was debating how to finish it off. If I was a pro sewer, with a huge quilting table, I’d have sewn on a contrasting leatherette end. But I’m not, and I want to share tutorials that are DOABLE for most people. I figured I’d finish it with some long, elegant fringe.

The styles I use are totally contrasting, but I like that. I wanted to retain an elegant touch, and mixing a traditional look into the outdoorsy, organic vibe of the leatherette really grounded it.

At first I was going to run it through my sewing machine, but then I discovered that I don’t have a leather needle, and decided to use fabric glue instead. To be honest, this is a project that REALLY does not need to be sewed. Fabric glue more than did the job and made it easy.

Since leatherette is big and bulky, being able to spread it out on a large surface really helped.

Start  by figuring out which leatherette best suits your space, and which trim finishes it off in a way that fits your style.

What you need to make an easy DIY leatherette tablecloth:

How to make a DIY leatherette tablecloth:

1. Cut your leatherette to size by draping it over the table you plan to cover and trimming it as needed. Keep in mind the length of your fringe.

5. When you hit the corner, trim it so that it forms a perfect right angle, flush with the next side.

6. Start the next side by first gluing the trim so that it overlaps the previous side. Make sure you have that side laid down flat and easy to work with…

8. Allow it to dry completely before using. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and it looks like new!

It did get a bit creased as I was working, but the fabric is heavy and it hung out after a couple of hours…

So the trim isn’t exactly very washable, but I did leave those extra few inches so that if in a year or two, my kids have completely destroyed it, I can snip off the trim, add a fresh batch, and it’s good as new!
