We all know how important pregnancy nutrition is. Throughout the year, getting enough nutrition is important, but not quite as important as when you’re pregnant and responsible for another human being’s intake too! I always have a hard time when it comes to nutrition and tend to be missing some key elements. 

After trying for some time to conceive, one of the big changes that I made was to start supplementing my diet. Soon afterwards we got the news that we were pregnant…

 

With this in mind, I realized how important it is to take care of my body if I want to carry this baby to term, and to give birth to a healthy child. I made a commitment to focus on proper pregnancy nutrition to sustain my baby. 

 

There are some key nutrients that a pregnant woman needs more of. There are others that people tend to be deficient in, but at this critical time, she simply needs to be more on top of. This list includes both

  • Iron: My mother keeps asking me if I’m iron-deficient, but proper supplementation helped me not to be this pregnancy (My OB told me I’m even better than him!). Over 17% of pregnant women in the US are diagnosed with iron deficiency – so make sure you eat right and supplement where needed! You do need more when pregnant, so make sure to discuss supplementation with your doctor.
  • Vitamin DVitamin D deficiency is very common even among women who are not pregnant. Food is not a good source of Vitamin D, and it gets tricky getting it exclusively from the sun. Needs may be higher for pregnant women, and so you may need to supplement.
  • Folic Acid: I supplemented with this even before I started with the other supplements. It prevents neural tube defects, so make sure you’re getting 400 micrograms per day.
  • Iodine: This is one I was made aware of only while researching this article, so it’s important to share! It’s a necessity for normal brain development, and you DO need more during pregnancy. Since non-iodized salt is becoming more common, so is iodine-deficiency.
  • Calcium: While you do not need more calcium while pregnant, it’s that much more important that you get what you need! If not, your baby can tap into your supply. Calcium deficiency can increase your risk for problems later on (such as osteoporosis). If you don’t get what you need from your diet, make sure to supplement with something like VIACTIV.
