Okay, it’s not as if I really don’t like water. I drink a lot of water. But there are times when I just can’t seem to get enough down to really keep up with my body’s needs, and then I tend to default to sweet drinks.

Little Baby Y is just a few weeks old and already breastfeeds around the clock. He was a big eater from the day he was born, and I’m a believer in following his lead and nursing on demand.

The natural result: I’ve been finding myself perpetually dehydrated ever since I brought him home.

Throughout my pregnancy, I drank a lot of water, but I found my drive to drink going down when summer approached. My water was warmer, and I found myself drinking less and less. Then my baby was born, June 20th came and went, and the humidity began to rise.

Vintage seltzer came to my rescue.

The main tip to stay hydrated when you don’t like water (or are getting tired of it) is to find something to like to drink.

Sodas and other sweet drinks are not a good option for me, as the caloric intake is huge when you begin drinking. I do have a cup or so a day, but that’s nowhere near my hydration needs and not a good solution.

I grew up on Vintage Seltzer – we had it in our house every weekend as a child. I did not know that the word “vintage” had another meaning outside of seltzer as a child. And until today, their classic flavors: mandarin orange, lemon-lime, raspberry, and wild cherry are a regular staple in our home. Their new summer flavors (peach-mango, blueberry, and pineapple) are a fun change!

Now, when I sit down to breastfeed, I sit down with a bottle (not a cup, a full-sized one-liter bottle) of seltzer to keep me drinking. It goes down so much easier.

Vintage Seltzer has no calories, no sodium, no fat or sugar, and only natural flavors, allowing me to drink it as I do water. It’s also gluten-free, kosher and has no  HFCS and no FDC Color.

Anyway, on to my tips…

6 tips to help you stay hydrated when you don’t like water:

  1. Find something you like to drink – but is still hydrating. For me, seltzer is the perfect solution, and Vintage’s limited-time summer flavors change things up a bit!
  2. Add to it to refresh the flavor! You can try infusing it on your own with fresh fruit, cucumber, mint, or whatever it is you like. Here’s my blueberry-mint seltzer, using the blueberry flavor seltzer with a sprig of fresh mint from the garden!

  3. Make your own mixers – If you really need more flavor and find yourself constantly turning toward the sweet drinks, why not find a better balance? I love adding one part grape juice to three parts pineapple (or another flavor) seltzer for a refreshing spritzer. That way you get four cups of fluid for the same caloric intake of juice.

  4. Drink from the bottle! You might feel rude doing this, but honestly, if it’s your personal bottle, why not? It gets you drinking so much more, as you don’t need to keep refilling your cup. I find the one-liter bottle to be the perfect size (my favorite water bottle is that size too). It holds enough to keep you going, but not so much that it’s hard to drink from.
  5. Keep track – to ensure you’re getting the right amount. On that note, make sure you’re getting extra any time you take away from your hydration (such as exercising, hot weather, or breastfeeding). As far as caffeine is concerned, if you’re a coffee enthusiast like me, you’re probably good, as it likely won’t cause dehydration.
  6. Keep it handy – Keep a bottle where you breastfeed. Throw a few cans into a cooler bag when you leave the house. Don’t get trapped without your precious fluids, or you’ll find yourself buying sodas.

  1. I don’t have many problems with water – as long as it’s COLD… water must be nearly frozen for me to like it. So, I store a huge pitcher of filtered water in my refrigerator. Love my Brita water pitcher. I pour about 10 oz of water over about 10 oz of ice to keep the water at a suitable temperature. And, yes, I’m always sipping on my cup.

Warm water from the tap? I’ll never drink it. So at least partly, I do understand where you’re coming from.

    1. Funny, I actually have the opposite problem. I have a hard time getting down water especially when it’s cold 🙂 Not when I’m going for an ice-cold drink, but when I’m trying to keep up with my daily intake.
