Being a Linux user, I’m using GIMP from 2018 and I’m able to satisfy my requirements.
of course it’s not going to be as powerful as Photoshop. But most all major features are there, and I can get all sorts of things done with layers, masks, photo effects, and more.

In reply to Christie. GIMP is a free program that has many of these tools, including dodge. It works in a way similar to photoshop. You can either do what I did, or use the selection tools that GIMP has as well to make the the background transparent. I don't know much about picmonkey, but I know that the Pixlr app has similar brightness/contrast tools to Photoshop, and some spot correction tools - you can try those.

Hey! Quick question. I’ve been trying to figure out the easiest way to get rid of the background of an image. Turning it transparent would be awesome but white is good enough. I see in one of your examples, you adjusted the brightness settings and then used the dodge tool. I don’t have photoshop, illustrator or anything fancy. I mainly use picmonkey and pixlr (chrome extension.) Is there a better way?

Great ideas I always edit my photos whether it is taking out shadows or just brightening them.
