Caroline, thank you for your kind words, and it's so nice to hear that your mother as well had sound advice for you. New mothers are so, so lost, and so desperate to do well. These first days have so much power. Thanks for your comment!

Although my children are now in their twenties and thirties I can still remember the days when I was breastfeeding them. For various reasons I was only able to breastfeed for, at the most, three months with all three of my children. With the first two I had an excellent G.P. who provided me with all the support I needed. With my third child I had the self-confidence to go against the 'advice' of my Health Visitor, which she didn't like. Nevertheless, I was proved right. I used to ask as many people as possible for their experiences and/or opinions and then decided what was right for myself and my child. Like you, I was given bad advice, in hospital, on how to position myself and my first baby during feeding. Once we were home my mother asked me if I was comfortable and, when I said no, she suggested I try feeding my baby the way I felt comfortable. Immediately, things improved. The advice she gave me, more than thirty years ago is mentioned in your article; a happy mother is as important as a well-fed baby, and the second will come with the first. It was interesting to read the opinions of a present-day mother and find that they are the same as mine. I hope your children grow-up to be as independent and loving as mine have.

These are really great tips! I was sooooo fortunate to have a fairly easy time breastfeeding my children. I donated milk to a couple moms who were struggling. I hope I can be an encouragement to others.

I LOVE all of the tips but especially 3 & 10. Never let anyone discourage you on breast feeding. What works for one may not for you. Do what works for you and baby & don't stress. Not only will the baby sense it, but it will affect your mood and supply. I personally just ignored looks and never let it bother me. I never used covers but I also was never exposed. I had 2 shirts and sometimes would nurse in wraps. Most people never knew what was going on. I even had one lady compliment me for not being ashamed or embarrassed nursing in a restaurant. Again, just do what works for you :) any amount of time nursing is better than nothing..

Thanks for stopping by! I do not regret for a moment sticking through with it, and today I feel as though it is one of my greatest accomplishments!

I am so sorry you had such a rough start to your breast feeding experience. Bravo to you for sticking it out and finding what worked best for you and your son. I haven't breastfeed for many years (my youngest just turned 18) but I have always been a huge advocate. I have had the honor of mentoring and guiding many young women in this process. You are absolutely right the the experience is different for all of us and just like everything in life it is harder for some than for others. I hope that we can all just continue to stand with each other and offer support.
