Wednesday, March 2 is Dr Seuss’ birthday, which we celebrate with Read Across America Day. It’s the perfect time to gather your favorite Dr Seuss books and cuddle up together for a cozy reading session. I recommend whipping up some hot chocolate to add a little extra hygge.

Read Across America Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading, by making a Dr Seuss themed one fish two fish craft. For little ones it’s a good opportunity to practice colors and counting while, most importantly, having fun.

You can read the much loved classic, One Fish, Two Fish together, and then amaze your kids by following up with some super fun and easy crafting. They can make their very own fish puppets and act out the opening part of the book. If you want to take the learning to the next level, you could even learn about fish body parts. The tail part is called the caudal fin. The fin on top is the dorsal fin.

You can make this craft your own by letting your kids mix it up a bit with the color choices. You could even cut out some accessories for your fish. You could copy the book and give one of them a “yellow hat” and another one a “little star”. Alternatively you can come up with your own wacky ways to decorate or accessorize your fish.

What you’ll need to make this one fish two fish craft for preschoolers

How to make book inspired fish puppets

1: Take a piece of yellow, green, red and blue, colored craft paper. Use the template to trace and cut out the body, tail fin and side fin for the fish.

2: Glue the side fin to the top of the body.

3: Take the tail-fin and fold it in half, length-wise.

4: Create small and even, accordion folds on the tail-fin paper cutout.

5: Fold the tail-fin in the middle.

6: Apply glue to the middle part of the folded tail-fin and press the two sides together. Only glue a small section at the base of the fold so that the edges of the fin spread out.

7: Attach the tail fin on the back end of the fish.

8: Use a black marker to draw the eye and mouth of the fish. Attach the fish to the end of a popsicle stick.

Step 9: Follow the same process to craft the rest of the fish.
