Don’t you love the satisfying feeling of making something yourself that you can really use and enjoy? Of course you do, that’s why you’re here. 

And you also know that it’s even better when your creation looks like something worth buying in a store – except you didn’t have to pay, and you got to have it customized your way. That’s what I call winning.

Today’s project, DIY scrunchies with bows,  is definitely in that category. This style of scrunchie is cute and trendy – I’m seeing them on  ponytails and buns everywhere, and now you can have one that you made yourself in a fabric you love. 

Not only that – it’s a fabulous beginner sewing project to learn to sew on!

In fact, you don’t even need to go out and buy fabric for this one – hair ties are small, so you can likely find scraps from another project that can be used for this instead of going to waste.

You can customize it further by tie-dying cotton fabric for the project. Or, work with fat quarters to get loads of fun designs in just the right quantity.

This project will be easiest with a sewing machine, but you can do it by hand too if you have patience. It’s a great, simple beginner project if you’re still just learning how to use a sewing machine or if you’re teaching a kid how to sew.

Technically, you can make it “no sew” by using fabric glue, but why not learn how to sew the real way? Find more beginner machine projects for kids here.

What you need:

• Fabric of your choice
• Erasable fabric marker (or tailor’s chalk)
• Ruler
• Good fabric scissors
• Needle or sewing machine – You can read up on my favorite sewing machines for kids and the best sewing machines for beginner sewers if you don’t own one yet.
• Thread (preferably one that matches the fabric)
• ¼ inch Elastic
• Safety pins

How to make DIY Scrunchies with Bows

1. First, we need to measure the fabric for the main part of the scrunchie and mark it off. The fabric used in the example shown was 34 cm x 8 cm (about 13.5 x 3 inches). If you make the fabric longer, then the scrunchie will be more ruffled. If you enjoy this activity, you can experiment by making a few to see what style you like best!

Usually I recommend following the instructions more closely the first time you make it before experimenting!

Cut the fabric along the marked lines.

2. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise (meaning that the 8cm/3in side is getting folded in half, while the longer side remains long) and sew the open sides together lengthwise. Do not sew the short sides!

3. Turn it inside-out so that you have a tube with the edges on the inside and the outside looking smooth.

4. Measure and cut a piece of elastic about ⅓ the length of the fabric.

Use a safety pin to attach the elastic to one of the open ends of the fabric tube. Attach another safety pin to the other end of the elastic without pinning it to anything else.

5. Slide the loose end of the elastic into the fabric tube. Use the safety pin to pull the elastic all the way through the tube and out the other side. You will need to scrunch up the fabric in order for the elastic to reach the other end.

6. Hold onto both ends of the elastic and take off both safety pins without letting go of the elastic. Sew the ends of the elastic together.

7. Sew the open sides of the fabric using either a sewing machine or a regular needle, whichever you find easier. I recommend tucking in the raw ends, tucking one side into the other, and then sewing over those closed ends. 

8. Next, we’ll prepare a piece of fabric for the bow part. Measure a rectangle of fabric and then round the ends. Ours is 7 cm x 15 cm (about 3 x 6 inches)

9. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and sew the edges together, leaving one of the shorter ends open.

10. Turn the fabric inside-out through the open end.

11. Stitch the open end closed. Pass the bow fabric through the center of the scrunchie, so that it’s centered.

12. Tie the ends of the bow fabric into a knot around the scrunchie. You can make a double knot to make it more secure. You can glue or stitch it shut if you want it rock solid.

Tada! All done! And that was so easy, you can go back to step 1 and make another one to go with each of your favorite outfits!

How to Sew Bow Scrunchies

• Fabric of your choice

Tulle is a fabulous material for Spring crafting. It’s light, airy, and you can get sparkly varieties too! With the outdoors becoming more accessible, it’s a fun way to dress up a party or event too.

But one of my favorite things to do with it is to create fun little accessories for my little self-proclaimed princess. She loves bows.

The thing with the “terrible terrific twos” is that you always gotta give them a CHOICE and today, when I gave A a choice of bows, she chose her pink sparkly ones (below).

So I figured it’s time to share the tutorial for how to make a tulle bow. It’s SO easy.

It took a grand total of half an hour for me to make the six pictured in this tutorial!!

How to make a tulle bow: the basic process

The basic process for how to make a tulle bow is simple: loop layers of tulle ribbon in your choice of width (more on that below).

Gather it together in the center with a needle and thread. No, you don’t need to SEW sew. You’re just threading it through once and winding it around the center to create a good, gathered cinch.

Finish it off with a ribbon – or whatever you’d like, more ideas on that below. And attach it to whatever you’d like, in this case, an alligator clip.

The loops on the sides of the bow are left CLOSED for a simple reason: it’s sturdier this way.

You’re layering it to get that gauzy depth but there’s no need to open them up. You CAN if you want, but you’ll find that it gets messy quicker that way.

Closed, it flows beautifully, with a soft curve, and gentle pleats. And everything stays in place.

Which materials are best for making tulle bows

The best tulle to use

To make these, I used tulle ribbon that is 6 cm (about 2.5-3 inches) wide.

You can go with wider if you have a hard time finding this size. Your bows will come out larger. You can also cut 6 inch tulle ribbon in half along the length.

Play around with different types of tulle – sparkles, stars, ombres… whatever suits your needs!

How to finish the center

The center of your tulle bow is held together using a needle and thread. However, that’s not very pretty. I used ribbons from my big stash of scrap ribbon – and it is a fabulous stash buster! I wound them around more than once for two reasons:

1. I was working with some narrower ribbons that looked better this way.
2. Even the thicker ones looked better wrapped a few times because it mimics that depth that you have with the layered tulle.

My ribbon came from a mix of dollar store lace trim and Michaels scrap packs.

You don’t have to stick with ribbon!

Try rolling a length of tulle into the right size and wrapping that. Add a large button to the center to cover the thread instead of ribbon (or in addition to).

If you’re averse to sewing (or like the look) you can wrap a very small hair tie in the center. Use a clear one if you’re doing it instead of sewing and wrapping ribbon on top, or a decorative one if you’re using it instead of ribbon. Make sure to glue it in place!

The base

Since I made these as pigtail clips, I made them small and used a 1 inch alligator clip as a base.

You can also make it larger and glue it onto a barrette or headband.

Make it jumbo to top a special person’s gift.

Glue it onto a hair tie and secure with a felt circle or extra ribbon on the back.

A few variations on how to make a tulle bow

As you can see, I made my tulle bows as small hair clips. If you’re making a larger accessory, try the following:

Instead of just cutting loops, cut LAYERS instead, leaving enough extra as the “tails” of the bow. Cross the two ends over the center and cinch together to form a bow with tails.

Try making two bows in two different sizes and before finishing with ribbon, glue the small on the large to make a double bow. Secure with ribbon around both layers.

Try adding embellishments such as large buttons, rhinestones, small fabric flower appliques, or similar in the center.

• 2.5 inch tulle ribbon (or cut 6 inch in half)
• Scissors
• Ribbon scraps
• Needle and thread
• Alligator clips about 1-1.5 inches
• Hot glue gun – I love Cricut’s – it’s easy to use and works well

How to make a tulle bow – the easiest way!

1. Wind the tulle around your four fingers (or a piece of cardboard you can cut to the width you want your bow to be, if you prefer to work that way). I did it about 4-5 times per bow, but you can adjust according to your taste.

2. Remove it from your fingers and trim from the roll of tulle. Don’t worry if the layers aren’t totally even – this variation adds character!

3. Have your needle and thread ready to go. Holding it so that the folds are on the right and left sides, cinch it in the center. Ideally, you’re first folding in half, and then folding each side down.

4. With your other hand, poke the needle through all layers and pull all the way through. It should mostly hold at this point, but don’t let go yet.

5. Wrap your thread around the center of your bow a few times to get a beautiful cinch going in the center.

6. Now poke your needle back through to secure, pull, knot and trim your thread off.

7. Take a piece of ribbon, and glue the end to the back of your bow.

8. Flip your bow over and wrap it around 2-3 times, or until you’re happy 🙂

9. If you’d like, you can glue on the clip before your last wrap is final. Glue the end of your ribbon in place on the back and trim.

Make your bow a pigtail partner if you’d like!

And try making it in another color!

I realized that I had an old tutorial that wasn’t as good, that demonstrates how to make a tulle bow with separated layers of fabric, so I figured I’d plop that here to show you how I’ve done it in the past. You can still read the tutorial on how to make big hair bows.

This bow is much larger and less full.

How to make tulle hair bows

Here’s a similar but slightly different way to make a tulle hair bow.

1. Layer a few pieces of tulle in the length you want (I layered 5 pieces).

2. Cut a length of thread. Accordion fold your tulle layers.

3. Wrap the thread around the center of the tulle, holding the accordion in place.

4. Glue the end of a bunched up piece of tulle ribbon to the back. Wrap a bunch of times until you’re happy with the thickness. Trim and glue in the back.

How to create more machine sewing projects for kids to use with the Stitch N’ Style Fashion Studio

Once you’ve created the kit projects, you definitely shouldn’t stop! Here are some tips to encourage kids to keep on creating their own individual style:

• Start simple: The simplest projects are the best to learn on! Kids build these skills with repetition. It’s okay if they sew a hundred straight lines before trying a curve. The more success they have, the more they will love to do it, and the more they’ll be willing to tolerate frustration if things don’t work once they explore more complex projects.
• Be generous with seams: When adults teach kids real life skills it’s important to take a break from how we do things and adapt it to them. The Stitch N’ Style Fashion Studio works best with half inch seam allowance, which are easier for the kids to handle. I first designed with quarter inch allowances since that’s what I’m used to. If using classic patterns, cut it a bit wider on the seams.
• Work with their interests: If your kid loves hairdos, start with the scrunchie. Unicorn obsessed? Try the Uni-Kitty plushie.

3 Machine Sewing Projects for Kids

Materials needed for all projects

What you need to make the pencil case

• The template – print it below
• Fabric: I used quilting cotton. I recommend a fabric that is on the thinner end, with no stretch and a bit of drape (avoid fabrics that are too stiff or thick.)
• Tailor’s chalk or washable fabric marker
• Hook and loop closures

Before every project

1. Switch your machine on using the switch in the back.

2. Make sure your thread is pulled out at least 2.5 inches (6 cm) before you start.

3. Make sure your button is in the pause position until you’re ready to start.

To make the glasses case

1. Cut out the sunglasses fabric.

2. Fold down the side seam and hold with clips.

3. Sew that first side. Simply place it right before the foot, and up against the guide. Make sure the “Stitch ‘N Style” logo is facing you during sewing. Slide the pause switch into the play position. It’ll give a quick, low beep before it begins and automatically starts sewing. It will also stop on its own when it reaches the end.

4. Push the lever to expose the thread and lock your last stitch. Cut the thread.

5. Lift up the foot to remove your fabric.

You’ve successfully sewed your first side! Make sure to pull out the thread 2.5 inches before sewing the next!

6. Fold your fabric in half so that the pretty patterned sides face each other. Sew along the markings.

7. Turn it right-side-out. You can use a pencil to push in the corners if you’d like. You’ve completed your glasses case and are ready to start decorating it if you’d like!

8. To add hydro prints:

Dampen your fabric using the included sponge.

Peel off the one you’d like to use.

Place the hydro print as if it’s a sticker and  use the stamper to stamp on top of it too.

Let it dry and your DIY glasses (or sunglasses) case is ready to use!

To make the plushie

1. Cut out both sides. This one is a bit different, as you’re using the print on the back of the fabric.

2. Place the right, patterned  sides together, and sew around the edge, leaving a small opening. Keep in mind that you probably will find it more challenging to sew on a curve like this and it’s okay if you need to retry and fix your stitch a few times before you get the hang of it!

3. Use the opening to flip it right-side-out.

4. Stuff it with fabric scraps!

5. Sew the opening closed. Push the lever to expose the thread and lock your last stitch. Cut the thread. Lift up the foot and remove. 

6. You can enjoy your plushie as-is or sew a small tab on top for a keychain! I used another scrap to do this.

Slide a keychain through the hole. Your plushie is ready to keep or gift!

To make the pencil case

1. Print and cut out your template. Make sure to print it “actual size” and not “fit to page.” Tape it to your fabric on the wrong side to hold it in place while you trace.

2. Trace it with a washable fabric marker or chalk.

3. Fold up the dashed lines and mark those with dashed lines on your fabric so that you can know where to fold

4. Cut it out around the outer edge.

5. Fold down on the dashed lines, clip, and sew in place. Start with the small flap.

6. Next, sew down the three seams of what will be the closure of your pencil case.

7. Fold it in half so that the two crayon shapes line up, right sides facing each other. Sew on the straight side, and then the three sides of the point.

When sewing the top angled side, make sure to hit “pause” to stop sewing when you reach the end of the side, or it’ll continue sewing onto the cover flap.

8. Flip your project right-side-out. Use a pencil to poke out the corners.

9. Add hook and loop closures. Place both sides on the flap, and then fold it over and press to determine where the other side goes.

You’re done creating a DIY pencil case! Fill it with pencils, crayons, markers, or whatever you’d like!

Fur pom poms are the finishing touch to any winter accessory – but did you know that you can make them from scratch?

These adorable faux fur hat toppers come together super quickly. They are hand stitched using a running stitch around the edge and stuffed with a small amount of poly fill to give them shape.

The trickiest part of learning how to make faux fur pom poms is figuring out how to cut it so that you don’t destroy the fur. The rule of thumb when cutting faux fur: always cut only the back. You want to only cut the knit backing of the fur and not the fur itself, or you’ll get a choppy edge on your fur. So if you’re using rotary cutter, you’ll want to do a light cut on the back of the faux fur.

You can also cut it with a scissor from the front. Use something – such as a pen, to find the fabric between the fur – just as you would find the scalp when parting hair – and cut there only.

Another thing to note is that classic craft fur is very long and shaggy. You may want to try ironing it before making your piece. You also may want to give it a “hair cut”. Most pom pom tutorials require trimming, and faux fur pom poms aren’t really different.

The main difference is: you don’t want it to look too choppy. You can accomplish this by cutting with your scissors parallel to the faux fur, nipping away at the ends.

Should you make or buy your fur pom poms

Before you learn how to make faux fur pom poms, it’s worth considering: is it even something that’s worth making? Not everything needs to be a DIY!

Personally, I’m not sure. It’s not that expensive to buy fur pom poms and they tend to look really neat and nice when you buy them. And while you can make them look neat if you DIY, it’s not something that comes together neatly by default.

You may want to make your own faux fur pom poms if:

• You have an easier time getting craft fur than pom poms
• You have faux fur handy but not pom poms
• You like the shaggy look
• You need a very specific color or size that you’re not finding
• You only need them occasionally (and don’t need a big pack) and faux fur is something you keep handy for other crafts too

How to make faux fur pom poms

1. Cut a square for faux fur, roughly 2-3 inches by 2-3 inches, depending on how big you want it. Make sure to only cut through the back knit layer of fabric and not the fur strands. Do this by cutting lightly with a rotary cutter on the back. Or, separate the strands on the front and cut between the rows. You can also cut a circle if you prefer, however, due to the nature of fur, I found it easier to cut a square. It works both ways.

2. Start sewing a running stitch (in and out) around the perimeter of your square, picking up only the back layer as much as possible.

3. As you sew, pull the thread to cinch/pleat the fur.

4. When you’re almost done stuff your faux fur pom pom with poly fill.

5. Pull the whole thing tightly shut. Sew between the ends of the faux fur a few times – until you feel it’s strong enough. If you want to make them removable/exchangeable, you can sew on a button or snap at this point. Or you can leave the thread on to sew directly to your project.

Otherwise, knot your thread and trim.

6. Smooth out your fur so that it’s facing the top of the pom pom (away from the sewn edge). Use your needle to pry out any fur that got caught in the sewing. Slowly trim down the faux fur until your pom pom is a good shape. To avoid choppy edges, cut with the scissors the same direction as the fur and snip away slowly – over a garbage can of course!

And it’s so much fun, and so satisfying! Kids who love gadgets want to get their hands on the sewing machine (I plan to teach M as as soon as he’s responsible enough). Adults and teens should also be learning how to sew the basics – even if they can’t do patterns or complicated garments.

When you’re stuck at home, sewing is a fantastic skill to learn. And my favorite way to learn a new skill? Make an actual functional end product.

With the holiday season coming up around the bend, learn how to sew a potholder to give out as gifts or as part of gift bundles. They’re also practical for entertaining and they are a fantastic learning project.

The pattern in the center of your easy fabric potholders serves a triple purpose: it binds the layers together, it’s decorative, and it makes great sewing practice for beginners to learn how to guide fabric through the machine.

This tutorial on how to sew a potholder does not include batting or any central quilted layer. Instead, it relies on the use of a heavier fabric to control the heat. This is also great for learning how to sew, because in real life, not everything will be made of thin quilting cotton. Because the shape you’re sewing is basic, you won’t be going over thick seams and you can do this with a regular sewing machine.

What you need to sew a fabric potholder:

• Thick cotton fabric (make sure it works – double it up and see if you can comfortably hold a hot pot.)
• Fabric chalk, disappearing marker, or pencil
• Contrasting color thread
• Sewing machine (this one is fantastic for beginners and beyond)
• Ruler
• P=Ball pins
• Fabric Scissors
• Optional: iron

How to sew a potholder:

1. Select a thick fabric for the project. You can repurpose jeans for this if you want. Draw 2 identical squares and cut them out. They should be about half an inch larger than you want your potholder to be.

2. Pin the 2 square fabric cutouts together (right sides facing if your fabric has two different sides) and sew along four sides, leaving a two inch opening. Practice following the guides on your sewing machine for a 1/4 inch seam allowance, but don’t worry if it’s not perfect. This project is great for learning because it’s forgiving.

3. Turn your fabric right-side-out through the opening you left.

4. After you turn the right side out, fold in the seam allowance by the open side and use a pin to secure it. Pressing it will make it come out sharper. Use a pencil and ruler to draw a square spiral pattern on either side of the sewed fabric.

5. Sew along the traced spiral pattern in a contrasting color. Cut out a small rectangular piece (1.5 X 4 inches) to make the loop/hanger of the potholder.

6. Fold the new cutout into thirds the long way, press if you want, and sew it down.

7. Fold the fabric strip into half (lengthwise) and insert its open ends into the small opening of the big fabric piece. Pin in place. Sew a line along the whole side that has the open end, with about 1/8 inch seam allowance, so that it catches the ends of your loop, as well as your seam allowance. It’ll blend with your spiral pattern. If you don’t like how the single line looks, you can also stitch around the whole border.

The best sewing machine to get for a child who is ready for it is a real grown-up sewing machine with very basic features. Not only will it grow with your child, but it’s necessary for making real projects and not just simple sewn crafts.

If you can swing it, this is what I recommend for most children.

Of course, you won’t have the safety features and extreme portability of a toy machine, but hey, it’ll sew!

The main feature you need here is ease of use – and a fun color can’t hurt either!

3. Janome Easy-to-use Sewing Machine with Interior Metal Frame:

Fun colors aside, the name says it all. You have the very basic features you need – 15 stitches, mechanical, removable free arm, beginner feet and accessories etc.

The biggest con: I personally a very similar Brother model and I can assure you that it’s far from perfect. It can be glitchy, the tension isn’t spot-on, and sometimes more stitches can just cause more overwhelm for a new sewer. I love this machine but if purchasing again, I’d personally go for the Janome above instead. In addition, it’s got automation which means your child won’t learn how to do it on her/his own.

It’s very user-friendly and includes all the accessories your child needs to get started.

Best for: You want to save as much as possible and don’t care as much about the actual machine sturdiness. You want more features and stitches for a better price.

It’s got a one-step buttonhole with seven styles, plenty of decorative options, free arm, a large table, and adjustable sewing speeds.

Feature-wise it’s the best sewing machine for kids who regularly sew and already know how.

The biggest con: because so much is automated, your child won’t learn how to do it. You’re also paying for more than you need to get started, and too many features can sometimes cause overwhelm.

Best for: You want a machine designed for quilting too. You prefer a computerized machine to a mechanical one and want as many features as possible.
