This clothespin star ornament is so insanely cool. It’s almost like whoever invented clothespins had in mind to turn them into the perfect star!

You’ll be addicted to making these! You can make them bright or shiny by painting them with gold paint and adding tinsel pom poms. Or stick to a farmhouse feel by staining them or painting them white and backing them with canvas or buffalo plaid fabric. The idea is to make a star and then run with it!

This clothespin star ornament can be made as other crafts – not just an ornament! Make these as:

  • Place cards – ditch the pom pom and write a name on paper before you back it! Hang the loop over a napkin – it makes a fabulous gift as well as it can be repurposed as a clothespin star onament!
  • Gift tag – Use this as a gift tag and it makes another fabulous “bonus gift” since it can again be repurposed as an ornament.
  • Garland – Make a bunch and string them up as a garland!
  • Tiered tray decor – They are the perfect size for a tiered tray decoration! Make them using different materials for interest.

Whether or not your kids can help you with this will depend on which materials you use.

Stick to wood glue, or even better, tacky glue for kids. Be aware that classic acrylics aren’t washable so wear a good smock, or use washable paints.

However you choose to make your clothespin star ornament, it’ll be fabulous and gorgeous!

What you need to make a clothespin star ornament

How to Make a Star from Clothespins

1. Gather all supplies. Remove the metal spring from the wooden clothespins. Line up five clothespins in a V shape on your work surface, to create a star shape. Attach the wooden clothespin pieces together with a glue gun and glue sticks, using the photo as a template.

TIP: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.

2. Paint the front and all sides of the clothespin star with light yellow acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry.

3. Place star onto light yellow craft felt and trace the outline with a marker. Carefully cut out star from felt, cutting inside the traced lines for a clean, finished project. Trace each star separately because the shapes will vary slightly. Glue felt to the back of the star ornament.

4. Attach a variety of gold tinsel pom poms into the center of each star with a glue gun and glue sticks.

5. To finish the clothespin star ornament, cut a 24” length of natural jute twine, tie it in a 6” loop with a knot, and finish with a bow.

6. Attach the loop and bow to the top of the back of the clothespin star ornament with a glue gun and glue sticks.
