As fall is upon us, what could be cozier than working with soft yarn as the wind picks up outside? And I have the perfect crochet maple leaf pattern with which to do that! These sweet little maple leaves match the ones blowing around outside, but they won’t crumble so easily underfoot or get soggy in the rain.

Because they’re small and quick, you can make a bunch in different colors – either in a fall motif of yellows, oranges, reds and browns, or in whimsical brighter colors if you so choose – and combine them to form a larger project. Try rainbow colors, stick to strictly red for Canada Day or keep things rustic.

Joined together or attached to a wood or cardboard backing, these would make a beautiful door wreath to greet the season and your visitors. They can also be used to accessorize a sweater, hat, or other cool-weather gear. String them together for a fabulous fall garland.

Try making one or two leaves with a metallic thread to accent your design and really make it sparkle, or use a chenille type of yarn for an extra warm feeling. Choosing a variety of colors and textures can really evoke the fall atmosphere, with the real-life changes of both the leaves and weather.

Alternatively, you can use less contrast for a more soothing, calm look. It’s amazing how much space there is for individual creativity even when following a simple pattern!

These directions are written for those with some crochet experience. If you’re new to crochet, you’ll have to learn the stitches first. But I’ve included very clear step-by-step pictures to help you along and I think you’ll find this project to be a really fun way to expand your skills!

How to crochet a maple leaf

1. Select any fall colored yarn and start with a slip knot. Work 6 or 7 chain stitches.

2. Form a loop with the chain stitches by working a slip stitch through the first chain stitch.

3. Chain one and then work 11 SC (single crochet) into the loop.

4. Close the first row by working a slip stitch through the first top chain stitch of that round.

5. For the second row, work 2 chain stitches. Work a DC (double crochet) into the nearest chain stitch.

6. Close the second round of DC by working a slip stitch through the first top chain stitch of that round.

7. Work 2 DC into the nearest stitch.

8. Work 2 TC (triple crochet) into the same stitch.

9. Work a picot stitch next.

10. Work 2 DC into the same stitch again.

11. Skip the next chain stitch and then work a slip stitch into the 2nd next chain stitch. You’ve now completed the first of the five points of the leaf.

12. Repeat the same process to crochet another leaf point. Next, we will crochet the big, middle point of the leaf.

13. Work 2 DC, 2 TC into the same chain stitch for the third point. Then work a picot crochet stitch at the top.

14. Work 2 TC, 2 DC into the same stitch next. Skip the next chain stitch and work a slip stitch into the following chain stitch.

15. For the last 2 small points, the crochet pattern will be slightly different than the first two. Work 2 DC and then work a picot stitch.

16. Work 2 TC, 2 DC into the same chain stitch to form the 4th point. Skip the next chain stitch like we did before and work a slip stitch into the stitch after that.

17. Repeat the process to crochet the 5th and last leaf point.

18. Chain 4 onto the hook.

19. Skip the chain stitch next to the hook and then work 1 SC (single crochet) into the next 2 chain stitches.

20. Work a slip stitch into the adjacent chain stitch of the base pattern and pull out a few inches of the yarn.

21. Cut off the extra yarn and use a tapestry needle to stitch the remaining yarn to the back of the fall leaf pattern.
