Got an old stash of CDs and DVDs at home? Maybe you used to burn your own “mixtapes” and have spares? Or you’ve already digitized your collection and need to downsize?

Whatever it is, you’ll love this adorable sunglasses craft for kids!

Just a quick word of caution before we start: cut up CDs and DVDs can be challenging. You’ll want to advance prep this for your kids. The best way to do it is to heat it up first and then cut. A grown-up should definitely do this.

The cut CDs are like a blunt cutlery knife. That means that it’s unlikely to really cut a child, unless they poke a corner into their skin. Use your discretion and only do this with kids who are mature enough to NOT try those kinds of tricks.

It’s not glass. However, you may want to be careful in the following ways:

  • Cut round edges rather than pointy corners.
  • You can try wet sanding any parts that are still worrying you.
  • Encourage kids to wear rubber gloves when crafting with cut CDs and DVDs

Again, only make these with close supervision and with kids who are old enough to be responsible. While the CDs and DVDs are gorgeous and green to craft with, you may prefer to try it with plastic mosaic tiles instead.

You can also prep piles of CD parts for your craft stash in advance. This way you can test drive them first to make sure that they’re suitable for your crafting needs.

This sunglasses craft is not quite a real pair of sunglasses, but it’s fun for kids to play with! You can also use these as a summer craft for tweens for decorative purposes, make them without the shades

What you need to make to make Sunglasses from Upcycled CDs:

How to make Sunglasses from Upcycled CDs :

1. On cardboard, draw (2) circles with a hole in the center and cut them out. These will be the frame of the sunglasses.

2. On cardboard again, draw two handles and cut them out as well. If you need help with the shape, you can try copying a photo or tracing a pair of sunglasses.

3. Use double-sided tape to stick the circles onto the cellophane. Trim around your cardboard frame.

4. Cut the CD into small pieces. Make sure that the edges of these pieces are smooth and polished so they won’t hurt. A grown-up should do this in advance.

5. Add the pieces of CD around the perimeter of the circle frames to form a border.

6. Cut a small rectangle from cardboard and glue it between the two circles, connecting them.

7. Add the handles to both sides of the sunglasses. Your fun pretend CD sunglasses are ready to have fun with!

Tips:

  1. A grown-up should handle the scissors and glue gun.
  2. Make sure to use the correct materials to make this work. Stiff cardboard is required to hold the shape.
  3. Let your creativity flow! Want to make this with younger kids? Use buttons around the border, glue with tacky glue, and alternate for age-appropriate materials.
  4. Add your own designs and create your own patterns too.
