Princess A, who will be turning 2 soon, loves to sleep with her cozy “monster”. Because who said monsters need to be scary? They’re cozy if you ask A!

Today, I’m sharing a fun monster craft that can double as a puppet due to the opening on the bottom that allows you to put your hand in.

You can also create this yarn monster craft as part of a Halloween display. Make them in a rainbow of colors, with different eye counts and mouth shapes for interest. Make some taller and some shorter. Use chenille yarn, fuzzy yarn, and definitely switch it up as much as you can!

Kids can help craft this. You may want to help with some parts, and it’ll dry faster if you use a hot glue gun, which should only be used by a responsible adult.

However, you can glue it together using craft glue as well, making it a kid-friendly project that’s fun and tactile. Where needed, use clothespins or bag clips to clamp parts together until they dry.

Supplies needed

How to make a yarn monster

1. Cut the paper cup to your desired size and paint it yellow.

2. Divide it into three with a pen.

3. Start with the bottom layer. Cut the yarn into short pieces. Trace your bottom line with glue. Attach the yarn one at a time. Continue with your second line, and then glue a final layer around the rim of the cup.

4. Create the monster’s mouth: cut a bean shape from the brown paper and a small piece for the tongue from the red paper. Then make teeth from the copy paper. Glue them together.

5. Attach the mouth.

6. Make three holes at the top of the paper cup. Add googly eyes to each popsicle stick. Insert them into the holes.

7. Create the monster’s hands: Cut from white cardstock and attach it.

Your yarn monster is complete! Boo! Place your hand in the base to use it as a puppet, or arrange a few in a Halloween display.
