slip stitch

DC – double crochet

TC – treble/triple crochet

The Pattern & Step by Step tutorial

Step 1: Choose your flower center yarn and start with a slip knot. Chain 4.

Step 2: Form a ring with the chains by working a slip stitch into the first chain – that is, your slip knot.

Step 3: Chain 3 on your hook.

Step 4: Work 11 double crochet into the center of the ring. Including the first 3 chain stitches, which form the equivalent of a double crochet, you’ll have 12 stitches around the center ring.

Step 5: Work a slip stitch through the top chain of the first 3 chains – that formed your first DC. Pull out the yarn and cut it off from the skein. You’re about to start fresh. Keep the loose yarn on the reverse of the crochet. It’ll be secured later on in this pattern.

Step 6: Take your petal yarn skein. Start with a slip knot. Insert the hook through any one of the gaps between the DCs of the first round.

Step 7: Pull the slip knot through the gap. Work 3 chains on your hook.

Step 8: Work 2 dc into the same gap.

Step 9: Pull out about 2 cm of the last chain.

Step 10: Insert your hook into the top chain of the first 3 chains.

Step 11: Insert the loose chain into the hook and tighten it firmly.

Step 12: Pull the second chain into the first chain like a regular crochet stitch.

Step 13: Work 2 chain stitches.

Step 14: Work 3 dc into the next gap.

Step 15: Pull out the last top chain stitch by 2 cm and remove hook from it.

Step 16: Insert hook into the gap between the 2 petals. Pull over the loose chain into the gap neatly and carefully.

Step 17: Repeat the process that you used to crochet these two petals to create the remaining petals. This is known as a popcorn stitch.

Step 18: Keep the hook inside the last stitch, and work a slip stitch into the top chain of the first 3 chains.
Pull out the yarn by 3 or 4 cm and cut it off from the skein.

Step 19: Take your background color yarn for the granny crochet border and start with a slip knot. Insert the hook into any one of the gaps between the popcorn stitch petals.

Step 20: Pull the slip knot through the gap and work 3 chains.

Step 21: Work 2 dc into the same gap.

Step 22: Work 3 dc into the next gap.

Step 23: Work 3 tc (treble crochet) into the next gap and then chain 2.

Step 24: Work 3 tc into the next gap. We have formed the 1 st corner of the granny square pattern.

Step 25: Work 2 sets of 3 dc into the next 2 gaps.

Step 26: Work 3 tc into the next, chain 2 and then 3 tc into the next gap to form the second corner. Repeat the process to form all 4 corners.

Step 27: When you’re done creating all 4 corners, work a slip knot into the top chain of the first 3 chains. Pull out the last loop and cut off yarn from the skein.

Step 28: Secure the open ends of all the yarns on the reverse of the granny square by threading them through the crochet stitches.
