Learning how to crochet basic shapes is a great starting point for the hobby crafter. Shapes like this free star crochet pattern, or this tutorial on how to crochet a small heart allow you to incorporate more texture into your crafts, even if you’re not about to crochet something like a sweater.

Use this free star crochet pattern to make something cool!

  • String them up into a starry garland
  • Or turn them into a charming story-book like baby mobile
  • Applique them onto clothing
  • Hot glue them onto alligator clips, headbands, or barrettes

To make these small crochet stars, you’ll need to know how to do the following:

  • Make a magic ring
  • Chain (CH)
  • Single Crochet (SC)
  • Double Crochet (DC)

While a magic ring might seem intimidating if you’ve never tried it, it’s quite simple. It allows you to crochet more loosely into a circular shape and pull it tight when you’re done. This way, you don’t need to try to squeeze yourself into a tight spot, making it easier.

And while this free star crochet pattern might seem obvious to make in shades of yellow and yellow-orange, definitely try it in a rainbow of colors!

What you need to make your free star crochet pattern

How to crochet a small star

1. Start with a magic ring. To make a magic ring, loop the yarn twice around two fingers. Make sure to leave at least two inches yarn past your magic ring. Insert the crochet hook through the loop and yarn over from the closed end.

2. Pull the yarn through the loops.

3. Work 1 chain stitch through the current loop (on the hook). The magic ring is complete. Keep the ring loose for now. If you pull the open end of the magic ring, the loop will become smaller.

If you’ve never made a magic ring before, you may prefer to see it in action. Here’s a video I found that may help:

4. Work 1 single crochet (SC) through the magic ring.

5. Work a double crochet (DC) through the magic ring.

6. Now, chain 2.

7. Next, work another double crochet (DC) through the magic ring.

8. Work  a single crochet through the magic ring.

9. Work a double crochet and then chain 2.

10. Work a double crochet again. Repeat *SC, DC, CH 2, DC.

11. Repeat this pattern “SC, DC, CH 2, DC” a total of 5 times for a 5 point star.

12. Pull the open end of the magic ring as tightly as possible and close the center hole of the ring. This will form the 5 point crochet star pattern.

13. Work a slip stitch through the first chain stitch on the magic ring and then pull out a few inches of the yarn.

14. Cut off yarn from the skein, keeping 2 or 3 inches extra. Insert a tapestry needle through loose extra yarn at the end of the crochet pattern.

15. Stitch the extra yarn on the reverse of the star crochet pattern. If required, cut off extra yarn after stitching a few times. This will secure the star pattern.

16. Use different colored yarns and crochet a few more to make variations on the star pattern.
