Indoor Chalk Activity – Make a Town

Indoor Chalk Activity – Make a Town

Occasionally I feature an idea that is not my own, rather my mother’s, as is the case with this indoor chalk activity.

When I was little, we would use sidewalk chalk to color over the (painted) concrete floor in our basement. My mother has since replaced the playroom carpet with durable vinyl tiles. She allows my brother and nieces to color on it, as it washes right off.

I don’t know how a different type of floor would react. It needs to be able to hold the chalk, but not be so porous that it would stick. Test it out and see if it works for you.

The other day, my eleven year old brother joined with my seven year old brother and nieces (ages 22 months to almost six) and turned it into an amazing indoor chalk activity. They created a city with roads, a farm, and even an airport!

They pulled out the toy cars and were entertained for hours.

It’s hard to find an activity that spans so many ages and this one was perfect, simple and inexpensive, so I thought I’d share. Here’s a bird’s eye view of the city/town/village (the farm got cut off – it was all the way on the left):

This can be done outdoors as well, as long as you don’t mind taking your toys outside. It’s a lot of fun and provides hours of entertainment across a broad range of ages. Have fun!
