When my daughter’s friend’s mother hired me to run crafts at her daughter’s party, we chose two fun princess party crafts for them. One was spot-on for that age group, and one was a bit challenging, but still fabulous. I’ll give a bit more specific guidance and feedback, but first the two crafts:

1. Decorate your own crowns and
2. Princess poke art

Both follow my main rules for party crafts: they need to have zero or almost zero dry time, include a take-home that will double as a party favor (though in this case, she did have full favor boxes available), and it needs to be something functional that they can use.

Decorate your own crowns Princess Party Craft

Our first craft was fabric princess crowns that we decorated with gems and rhinestones. This craft was such a hit, and as you can imagine, the kids wore it for the rest of the party.

This was our main “original” craft. It was the first choice for the party and it was a good one.

Why we chose it

Open-ended decorating with stickers is one of my favorite party craft types. Give kids gems and they can really sit for a long time with them.

We did gem decorating activities at A’s birthday, with the same group of kids, and they sat with it for a long time. They were mesmerized, carefully placing each gem, and feeling so proud of their work. You really can’t go wrong with this one.

We LOVE party crafts that include wearables because the kids take such pride in it, and wear it for the rest of the party. It doubles as a party hat and kids wear it for the rest of the day. When they go home, it goes into their dress-up box for continued use.

The crown base is a fabric one, with an elastic, so it’s a costume-quality craft.

How it went

The kids loved it. It was a similar crowd to A’s party when we also did gem decorating and they really went with this one too. I did add in foam stickers to change things up a bit, and the kids enjoyed both.

The crown pictured on A is the one that she actually made. Adding the foam stickers DID shorten the time that the craft occupied, because the kids felt like their crowns were full earlier.

As with any party craft, some kids will finish earlier than others. It’s good to be prepared with something extra for them to do in that time.

Alternatives and tips

With this kind of open-ended party craft, it really is a good practice to have lots of options for kids to choose from. I personally don’t think I’d put out foam stickers next time, but I might do what I did with our sleep mask craft – that is, provide a big initial or some other focal piece, but allow kids plenty of surrounding space to get detailed with their gems.

You can definitely pull out other decorations for this but I really recommend you stick to self-adhesive no-dry-time ones. Some examples:

• Decorative patches (small ones)
• Flower rhinestones
• Smaller foam embellishments
• Self-adhesive pearls – we had some mixed in with our stones, but I’d definitely provide more as its own decoration next time
• Lace washi tape

Test supplies in advance to make sure they really work (the only ones I really tested are foam).

Princess Poke Art Party Craft

The second one we did was princess poke art. These are printed foam princess figures that have notches in them. Use a stick to poke little bits of fabric into the holes to look like a ruffly dress.

This princess party craft was a bit less successful. It’s still a cool craft, though, or I wouldn’t be sharing it. I WILL share with you what we should have done to make it more of a success.

Why it’s such a cool party craft

The reason we chose this to begin with is for the cool effect factor: kids are fascinated by the fact that they are creating a ruffly dress. They enjoy playing with and displaying the dolls after.

In fact, they even come with little acrylic stands to display the princesses. And since they come with sticker jewelry there is even more crafting value.

How it went

I’ll be honest: most of the kids didn’t finish it. And a few even got a bit frustrated, though they were very determined to finish it. There were a couple of older kids (6-8 years old) there who really spend a very long time on it and finished the whole thing.

The age listed on the craft was 4+ and most of the kids were age 4.5 to 5. I tested it on A, who was the oldest in the group (besides for the two big kids) and she did fabulously. But… she’s a bit of an advanced crafter.

The kids loved it. Some asked to bring home their sticks and some extra fabric and finish it at home. Even the ones that just poked in a few were very proud of their work. It’s a bit harder to learn and a bit more fine-motor-skills focused, which is why we still love it. It’s a real fine motor challenge, and is great for pre-writing skills.

What we’d do different next time

So what would we change to make it more of a success?

The biggest thing is: I’d do it first. The kids need to be fresh, with all their patience intact to really enjoy this. We had chosen this as an extra time-filling project, but it really needs to be a main project. The kids need to have their focus and be shown properly how to do it.

On that note: another thing I’d change is to really walk around the room and one by one show the kids how to poke it by finding the hole and poking it in.

Two Fun Princess Party Crafts to Make

Here’s a quick breakdown of everything I purchased and included in these activities beyond the basic kits, as well as how we ran the workshops (I did have one teenage assistant to help).

For both crafts, we used acrylic bins and containers spread out on the table for the supplies. This way it’s fully contained, but kids can clearly see what’s inside each.

We also brought gallon sized Ziploc bags and a Sharpie, and immediately gave each kid a bag with their name on it to store the craft in.

Craft Number 1: Decorate your own crowns

Supplies Needed

• Base crowns
• Gems
• Foam shapes – only include very small ones

Process

1. Right when you get the crowns, test the elastic. Some were a bit loose. A bit of hot glue or a second in the sewing machine fixes it, but you’re best off doing that in advance rather than finding broken crowns at the party.

2. Stick on gems and foam bits! That is really all. Some kids worked within the frame work of the pattern on the crowns, and others totally ignored it.

Now kids can wear their princess crowns proudly!

Craft Number 2: Princess Poke Art

Supplies needed

• Princess poke art kit: note – we only used the princesses, and not the larger wraparound ones. Consider this when buying your kits.
• Extra sticks. They’re basically scratch art sticks – like a larger, thicker toothpick. The kit came with two – check your kit details.

Tutorial

1. Proper instruction is key with this princess party craft. Point out to kids how the holes have a center.

2. Kids should place the fabric over the hole, roughly centered. Show them this detail. It doesn’t need to be perfect but they should know that it should be over the three-prong shape in the middle of the fabric.

Then they need to poke it in that shape (they can see it through) all the way to the table.

3. They can keep going, playing with different colors until all the holes are filled – or as many as they’d like to fill.

4. They can finish it off with the jewelry and tiara stickers if they want. And then they can display it on one of the stands (or rather, take one home to display it with).

This winter, A got VERY involved with making paper snowflakes, and as the weather warmed up, she had a problem. What next? She approached me with this problem and I suggested that she learn how to make flowers using the same paper folding technique.

But when we sat down to do it, she just couldn’t get it. So I made her some templates. The running joke in our house is that she doesn’t even realize that it’s not so normal for your mom to just design you a template that minute when you can’t figure out a craft. But the good news is, other moms don’t need to, becauese I designed it for you.

Get the easy paper flower folding templates

Most of the templates that I found online using this technique were more complex – more “snowflake style”. I wanted to use the same method but with simpler petals. I figured I’d create a few styles (eight to be exact). Some of them look similar, but when you cut them they’re all different.

Different ways to use these easy flower paper folding templates

I assembled my own flowers a few different ways. A liked to just cut them and do nothing with them – and that’s totally fine too! But I like to share some more practical ways to finalize it and turn it into something you can enjoy after you’ve crafted it.

Flat stemmed flowers

Some of my favorites are these “pinwheel” style flowers. To make these, I stacked two cut paper flowers using a brad pin. I then taped it (hot glue works more permanently) to a colorful dowel.

The result is a forward facing flower that is so much fun for display and doesn’t try to look too realistic.

I curled the petals on these to add some drama, and even made some extra cuts on one, showing how you can really play with the template within the provided framework.

A flower bouquet

Another favorite is this stemmed flower that can be arranged more naturally in a vase. It doesn’t try to look real, but it has that gathered vibe.

I used chenille stems to make stems and leaves, and added pony beads to the mix too. For these, I stacked 2-3 flowers, and I played around with curling the petals or leaving them flat.

Flat paper crafts

And finally, I wanted to show a scrapbooky use of the paper flowers. I went ahead and found buttons as the center, and glued them on a trimmed-down scrapbook paper background.

This is a great application for using the easy paper flower folding templates in scrapbook pages, but also as wall art/collages/shadow boxes, greeting cards, and as embellishments for any flat craft.

Tips for using easy paper flower folding templates

There are so many different ways to craft with this as it’s really just a basic template. I like to share ideas beyond what I tried, so that you can take it a few steps further – and because it’s impossible for me to physically try everything that can be done with this!

Adapting for different age groups

For younger kids, you may want to keep it simple. A, my main tester, is five. She really handled the simplest petal shapes in the largest size best.

This does make great cutting practice, as it can get pretty challenging. So go ahead and give them things that are a bit harder to try! My daughter tried it, skipped a few curves and grooves, and it still came out great!

You may need to help finish it for younger kids by separating the petals, if they don’t cut over the parts of the fold they were supposed to.

As for folding these correctly: I showed A how to do it once and she totally got the hang of it. So it’s definitely doable for most kids ages 6+ (she’s a relatively crafty 5.5 year old).

Either way, for younger kids I’d definitely focus on the larger flowers and then give smaller ones as they get more advanced. You can supply them with white glue and markers and they can decorate it and then glue the layers on each other.

For older kids, more advanced art supplies (as I’ll share in a bit), curling petals, and assembling it into stemmed flowers can be a cool finish.

The base flowers – paper, decorating, and more

To make these bright and colorful, I went ahead and printed the templates directly onto colored copy paper. I had the most fun with the post-cutting process. I pulled out automatic ink, easy to use paint markers and had fun adding doodles.

I also played with colored pencils – specifically these super soft oil-based ones which showed up really well on the medium blue paper.

You definitely want to print on regular paper (not cardstock) as it’ll make the folding and cutting process easier.

Some more ideas for decorating the base flowers include:

• Watercolor paints – since you’re using paper, you’ll want to go easy on this and allow for generous dry time. You can do this before cutting on the whole sheet, or after cutting, to make actual flower details.
• Paint sticks are a favorite for younger kids.
• Gel pens are fabulous for finer, more intricate doodles. Good quality gel pens are important as cheaper ones tend to be single-use.
• You can trace the template onto scrapbook paper or other fancy papers too! You really just need to main square template and the single petal. Just trace the square, fold it without the dashed lines, and use that single petal as a template on the final triangle.

There are so many more ways you can craft this, so if you have ideas, just drop a comment!

Playing with different materials

As you can see, I really did completely turn over my craft room pulling out a zillion different craft supplies. I experimented with layering different flower patterns. I really played.

I encourage you to do the same. Try buttons as the centers of stemmed flowers. Use large sequins as centers on flat crafts. Try crafting these with actual paper flower supplies. Pull pom poms into the mix.

There is really so much you can do here, and being creative with it will make it your own!

How to make a paper flower bouquet using easy paper flower folding templates

You’ll need

For the basic folded paper flowers

• The templates – get them  in my shop, on Etsy, and at TpT, printed on (colorful) paper
• A bone folder for crisper folds (optional but recommended)
• Good scissors that have a smallish (and pointed if not working with young kids) blade

For assembling it different ways (all optional/as needed)

• Coloring supplies such as paint markers, colored pencils
• Hot glue gun (adults only) – my recommendations for best hot glue guns
• Tape/double sided tape
• Dowels
• Chenille stems/pipe cleaners
• Pony beads
• Buttons
• Brad pins

Step by Step Photo Tutorial

1. First, if you haven’t yet, print your templates. I used colorful copy paper.

2. Cut it out on the outer solid square.

3. Fold it on the full-width dashed line. A bone folder can help you get a good, sharp crease so that your end project goes smoother.

4. Fold it again on the new full-width crease (the one that went perpendicular to the previous crease.)

5. You have one final dashed line that’ll again fold it into even halves, but this time into triangles. Fold it on that line. At this point, make sure all your folds are nice and sharp.

6. Cut out your petal on the solid line. Make sure to go along your folds as needed, but to leave the center fully connected.

7. If you’ll be placing something through the center, you can snip off a tiny bit of the still-connected corner to make a center hole for later.

8. Open up your flower You’ll see that some flowers will have “grouped” petals – that’s okay. If petals that are meant to be separate are connected, just fix that now with your scissors.

9. To make a stacked flower, cut another size.

10. Decorate your flower! My favorite way is with paint markers, creating random or floral-inspired doodles.

11. Now assemble them as you’d like! If layering flowers, stagger the leaves so that the top layer(s) fill in the gaps on the bottom one.

When I picked up a huge pack of pop tabs to make a soda pop tab bracelet tutorial, I knew I had to continue with more fun, colorful crafts. I ended up making these butterfly keychains using chenille stems and pony beads.

You’ll see lots of creators make soda tab butterfly keychains that look more “real.” My goal was to adapt that craft, and turn it into something more kid-friendly.

While you can create these with wire and glass beads, chenille stems and pony beads are easier to manipulate and make something much more colorful and fun.

Why we love soda tab butterfly keychains

Some craft projects require a pile of supplies and an hour of patience. This one doesn’t. You need a few basic materials – some of which you probably already have – and about 15-20 minutes. Want to craft more? Just make more of them!

The supplies are easy-to-find and cheap and you’ll love making this on repeat.

There are so many ways you can use soda tab butterflies. Clip one to a backpack zipper. Add beaded strands to make bag charms. Attach them to a key strap. Make a batch as party favors. Set them near the checkout table at a craft market. Tie one onto a wrapped present instead of a paper tag.

This version of DIY soda tab butterfly keychains is so playful and full of texture. It embraces the unconventional craft material and makes the most of it.

The chenille stem adds some plush that make these so much fun. The pony beads add color and character.

And I even used colorful ball chains to finish these off just to up the playful factor – because butterflies should be playful.

Design Variations and Styling Ideas

The materials we used

Any time anyone looks at my soda tab crafts, they ask “wait – you actually bought soda tabs?” My answer is yes. I didn’t have patience to collect so I bought. You can of course upcycle soda tabs. You’ll want to make sure there are no sharp edges, but it works.

You can even paint them with nail polish if you want the solid color look of mine. Just paint them before crafting.

And the ball chains can definitely be replaced with classic keychains, carabiner clips, or whatever floats your boat. I used colorful ball chains because I felt like it!

Chenille stems in a as standard size were used here – something you can swap out with aluminum wire (that is, thick easy to bend wire). Or use jewelry wire for a more mature look.

And pony beads can be swapped for any bead that fits on your wire.

More variations

Once you get the hang of the basic shape, you can really get creative with it. Change the whole mood with color, bead count, or build style. I even show this by wrapping my chenille stems in two ways in the images.

Match your colors to keep things looking more polished. Think purple stem with purple beads, or blue on blue for a cleaner finish. You can even match your soda tab color and keychain color. Mixed beads feel brighter and more casual. Orange, teal, pink, and yellow are great butterfly color if you like a cheerful look.

You can also adjust the shape. Fewer beads keep the butterfly light. A few extra beads make the center stand out more. You can even play around with single-tab wings for smaller butterflies!

Seasonal colors are easy too if you want to craft this beyond summer. Try pastels for spring or red and pink for Valentine’s Day. You can really add lots of character with color.

The charm is in the repetition

Your first butterfly doesn’t need to be fancy. Keep the shape simple, get the wings balanced, and make the center wrap tight. That’s what gives the piece its clean finish and durability. These really are strong – the wings are rigid if you do it right.

After that, repetition does the work. The second one comes together faster. The third one usually looks even better. Once the base pattern feels natural, color is where you can switch up your craft

How to make DIY Soda Tab Butterfly Keychains

You’ll need

• Soda tabs
• Chenille stems
• Scissors
• Pony beads
• Keychains

Step by step instructions

1. Take four soda tabs. Arrange them as pictured: One horizontal with the round end pointing to the left and one vertical so that the squared end matches the squared end of the horizontal one – the round end facing down. Do the same to the right with the round side facing right.

2. Take a chenille stem. Wrap the end a few times around where the two tabs form a corner. Don’t worry yet about exact positioning.

3. Take the other end of the stem and wrap it around the other pair of tabs a couple of times in the same spot – the inner square corner. The two sets of tabs should be touching or almost touching. Trim any remaining chenille stem.

4. Reposition your tabs. Your chenille stem is sitting on the inner side through the top hole of the tabs.

5. Take a second chenille stem. Fold it in half. Thread a bead on one side and place it in that center fold. This will serve as a stopper bead.

6. Thread on three more pony beads.

7. Place the stem over your wings so that the beads sit just below the wrapped portion.

8. Wrap each side of the stem around that center twist – one on each side. Go over the top, around the back to the bottom, and bring it back over to the frong.

9. We now have the base for our antennae. Thread a pony bead on one side of your stem about an inch from the wings Fold over and twist it around the length of that inch.

10. You should have a bit of a tail leftover from that antennae. Push it down through those three center beads.

You’ll have a bit of chenille stem leftover that came through above that base blocker bead.

11. Wrap that little extra through the bottom hole of the vertical soda tab on the same side as the antennae and back around the center stem until your chenille stem is fully used. This secures the wing against the body.

12. Repeat steps 9-11 with the second antennae on the other half of your soda tab butterfly.

14. I used the extra scrap from my first wraps to wrap a bit between the vertical and horizontal soda tabs to secure it more. You don’t have to do this, and the style of wrapping I show in the video doesn’t need this but you can if you want. At this stage, play with your butterfly, reposition things as needed. and make sure you’re happy with how it looks.

15. Add a keychain! You can thread it through an antennae bead, a soda tab hook, or wherever you’d like!

And here’s a peek at the other style of wrapping. The main difference is that we just wrapped that first wrap around the top of the hole instead of the inside.

FAQs for making soda tab butterfly keychains

What size soda tabs work best for butterfly keychains?

Standard soda can tabs are usually the best option. They’re easy to find, easy to match, and they give the most consistent shape.

Can chenille stems hold the wings without glue?

Yes, most of the time they can. A tight center twist is usually enough. Glue is optional if you want extra hold on a charm that will get bumped around a lot.

Are these safe for kids to make?

They can be, with adult supervision. Clean tabs can still have sharp edges, so I recommend purchased tabs for younger kids. Tight twisting can be tricky for younger kids. Pre-check the tabs and help with the final twists if you’re working with little ones. Tweens should get the hang of this and be able to craft it independently.

Another concern is the chenille stems. They can be pokey, so proceed with caution!

Can the same pattern work with different bead colors?

Yes. The structure stays the same, and the color swap changes the look completely. That’s part of why this project is so easy to repeat without getting boring.

Here are some basic color approaches I take when choosing colors for the candy stripe friendship bracelet pattern.

Sizing and Measuring (So It Fits the First Time)

You want it to fit – adding strings to a bracelet can be annoying – but you also don’t want to be wasteful. These tips for sizing and measuring your bracelet will allow you to get it right the first time.

How long to cut each strand

Since each wrist size is different, the general guideline is to start with your “wingspan” – that is, the size when you spread your arms. Take the end of the string with one hand, then, using the other, unspool it until your arms are stretched and the string is taught. Cut it there.

But there are so many variables at play! Someone who is very short but has a wide wrist may want to add a few inches. 45inches is a very safe zone for cutting, allowing space for knots and extras..

Here are some more factors that will affect.

How wide the bracelet will be

More strands equals a wider bracelet. If you’re using a lot of colors, you may want to add a few inches just to be safe. Keep in mind that you’re also using more strands, so you don’t need that much more.

The same strand count using tighter knots equals a slightly narrower look and will use less string.

Planning for ties

I do have a dedicated post on how to start and finish friendship bracelets, but keep in mind that it’ll affect the length of your starting strings too. If you’re using a knotted loop, you’ll need to choose one color to add a good 6-8 inches to.

How many strands to use

One of the cool things about the candy stripe friendship bracelet is that there are no rules with how many strings you can use!

Keep in mind that your bracelet will be one knot narrower than your strand count.

If you go too wide, you may start having curling.

How to fold or not fold

So do you double strings and fold them over or do you use one of each?

The general guideline is: Fold in half for a loop start and don’t fold for a tie start. If you fold, you’ll need half the colors of your strand count, so keep that in mind when planning.

How to anchor your work

You don’t need to anchor your bracelet as you work, but if you prefer to, here are some ideas:

1. Tape it to a table
2. Clip to a clipboard
3. Pin to a pillow or jeans (great for travel)

I usually work in my hands, but I do have a clipboard with storage inside in general for friendship bracelet making.

The Only Knots You Need: the forward knot

One of the cool things about this bracelet is that you only need ONE knot – the forward knot. Here are some tips for beginners.

Forward knot basics

A knot is made of two hitches – so it’s really a “double knot” as we’d know it. In a forward knot, you’re knotting the left string around the right string twice in the same direction. The working string travels from one non-working string to the next horizontally. You work one string across each row until you reach the next, and then start again from the left.

Common knot mistakes and quick fixes

• Knots loosening – if your knots aren’t holding, it could be because the string is too slick. You can wet them and tighten again before you put your work down, but otherwise, just make sure you tighten them back before “locking them in” with the next knot.
• Stripe looks bumpy – your rows should come out smooth. If not, it’s probably that you’re using different tension to knot each one. Tension refers to how tightly you knot and is heavily affected by your energy levels and mood. Consider doing each row in a single sitting.
• Holes near the top – the first row can really be wonky. Your strings aren’t straight yet. Don’t worry about that. Do make sure to pull that first row tight, but regardless, that’s not your core bracelet, so leave it be – you’ll figure that out when you gain some more experience.

Mini practice tip

Muscle memory is your fingers literally knowing what to do because they are used to make a certain motion. It’s what I’m now using to touch type this tutorial, it’s how you make your coffee before actually having coffee (because we know that’s NOT your brain doing it).

Muscle memory can be valuable with friendship bracelet making, and a key to keeping your knots in order and your tension even.

If you want your first bracelet to come out fabulous, consider building muscle memory by practicing the knots on some scraps first.

Candy Stripe Pattern Explained (How the Stripes Form)

Knowing the “science” behind how the knots form patterns was the key component I used to come up with my own designs – including knotted name bracelets, this open-weave ombre chevron, and more.

The core pattern rule

One working string travels across the row, creating the stripe color. The first hitch creates the top of the stitch. The second secures the bottom. These two create a stitch on the front of the bracelet. Moving along from left to right, you’re knotting (two hitches) around each string, creating a single stitch on the front of each vertical string.

What changes row to row

After each row, the working string moves to the far right.

The next row starts again from the left with the new first string. This “resets” it again, making a stitch in the next color on each string.

How to keep your place

One of the cool things about the candy stripe friendship bracelet is how easy it is to keep track. Keep strands flat and in order and you won’t lose your spot.

Pause at the end of each row, then gently comb strings with fingers to avoid knotting and confusing strings.

• Scissors
• Tape, binder clip, safety pin, or clipboard

1. Cut and organize your strands

Choose your colors and lay them in the exact order you want the stripes to repeat.

2. Anchor the top

Tie an overhand knot, then tape or clip it down so it won’t move, unless you feel comfortable working in your hands.

3. Separate the strings

Fan them out so they don’t overlap, keep them flat.

4. Make forward knots across the first row

Use the leftmost string as the working string. Tie a forward knot onto the next string. You’re tying left-to-right twice around the same string.

5. Finish the row and reset

Knot the rest of the row, using the working string to make a forward knot around each string. After you knot across, the working string ends on the far right.

Slide knots up gently to keep the row tight and clean (if needed).

6. Start the next row with the new leftmost string

Your new leftmost string becomes the new working string. Repeat the same forward knots across the row again. Keep your tension even so the edges stay straight and your bracelet looks neat.

7. Continue until it fits

Repeat this process, knotting the leftmost string around each string to its right. Check the length around your wrist before you finish.

Stop a little early if you plan on adding any decorative clasps or loop closures.

8. Finish the ends

You can finish so many different ways, but here are a few:

Option A: split your strings into 2 groups and make braided ties.

Option B: Just knot the ends.

Option C: Tie it off and add a ribbon crimp and clasp.

Every time I throw a birthday party, especially one that’s craft focused, I try to provide some sort of coloring page or printable activity that’s more open-ended for early finishers. This is usually not something that’s a main craft or that requires direction. It’s something the kids can just do so that they’re not bored.

When we threw A a mock-sleepover themed party, we also made a bit of a bedtime story corner, so bookmarks were just the perfect activity for that.

Crafting the slumber party bookmarks at a party

Since crafting at a party is not quite the same as crafting this at home with the littles, I figured I’d offer some of my best tips.

We crafted it as part of a structured party setup with preschoolers. If it’s tweens or teens, a smaller slumber party, or a more open-ended craft workshop, it’ll look different. I’ll include as many pointers as I can based on the party style below.

Preparation

Print your bookmarks on good cardstock.

For older kids, coloring pages can just be cut out. Give each kid a sheet to work with. For younger kids – and as a secondary activity – I do recommend pre-cutting them. It’s not hard, and you can use a paper trimmer to keep it neater, or just cut it by hand.

What to put out

This can be just a coloring activity or a bit more of a craft. We used colored pencils, so that the kids felt like they had something a bit more grown-up to color it with, but it’s still affordable, and neat.

You can definitely play it up a few notches by offering stick-on gems or other decorating supplies. I do recommend sticking with things that don’t need dry time – so self-adhesive decorating supplies (as opposed to glue) and fast-drying art supplies.

For older kids, go a bit more sophisticated. My favorite for the tween-and-up age group is gel pens. Quality does matter. For one-time use, you can go with a cheap set, but if you want one that you can pull out again and again, go for gelly rolls. You don’t need to get the full spectrum, but get a good color assortment.

Sending it home

Before each party, I usually prepare a goody bag with each participant’s name, with extra space for the projects. (We do have a few extras that can be labeled on the fly if needed). That way, we can collect the projects we make in their bags as we go along.

When I run craft workshops at other parties, I do the same with a Ziploc bag (or organza bag for jewelry making).

For this particular party, it was even more helpful. The crafts were a big element of the favor bags (specifically the sleep masks that they decorated) so the bags had the basic favors and the crafts were added in along the way.

Bookmarks fit nicely in lolly-sized bags, and can be sent home looking nice – not just like a coloring page – but like a “make-and-take” party favor.

Tips for finishing off and crafting the slumber party bookmarks

Want to take your slumber party bookmarks up a notch? Here are some crafting tips for finishing them off.

Of course, you can also stick to just coloring. If you’re doing this in place of basic coloring/activity pages for early finishers, you really can leave it just at that. But a few little touches can bring this pretty inexpensive craft up a notch and make it look really nice.

Tassels and other finishing touches

We pre-punched holes in our bookmarks before giving them to the kids to take home. Then, we added simple tassels to each. Just thread the loop end through, and pull the tassel end through the loop. It takes a second, doesn’t require glue and is an easy finishing touch that makes it look “real”.

Some other ideas for finishing it off:

• Use a corner punch to round off the edges (do this post laminating if you plant to laminate). This is both practical – it’ll minimize distress – and makes it look much more polished. A corner punch is one of my best craft-room investments – I use it all the time to polish up my prints.
• Let kids reinforce edges by framing them with decorative washi tape. It’s a great activity extension, especially when crafting with teens or tweens.
• For teens and tweens, turn it into more of a substantial craft by letting them craft their own tassels or beaded charms from scratch.

Should you laminate the bookmarks?

If you have a designated helper, you can definitely laminate the bookmarks before sending them home. They will look much nicer and be more durable. Don’t do this for an “early finisher” activity, but if it’s a primary take-home it’ll be a serious upgrade with minimal cost and effort.

Make sure to write names on each bookmark, laminate, and cut out to the edge of the bookmarks. Any finishing touches should be added after (tassels, gems, corner punches…)

When I was a kid, I used to take piles of hair ties and loop them together different ways. I made all sorts of things with it – my favorite was actually bracelets. But when I saw braided hair tie headbands all over my social media feeds, I knew it was time to revisit that!

Today I’ll be sharing FOUR fun ways to make these braided hair tie headbands. You’ll see presented in the photos and tutorial and another one in the embedded video tutorial. I just ran out of hair ties so I had to dismantle one to show you the last style!

That’s what’s so cool about theses hair tie headbands. There’s no gluing – it’s just looping. They are addictive and relaxing to make. They are inexpensive and look so cute with the different braids you can assemble. And you can even repurpose the hair ties a limited number of times (they do stretch out eventually).

Trying different methods of making braided hair tie headbands

I played with a few different methods of looping these. I wanted to show you just how much you can do with just two supplies. Yes, that is all you need. Two supplies and you have some really cool headbands with literally nothing else – not even glue!

1. The basic braid – front and top

The basic braid is the one that you may have seen the most. It requires a very basic looping method, where each hair tie is looped through the one next to it. You can make the braid portion (that’s formed by the looping hair ties) face forward or face up. We turned ours upward but I actually think it looks pretty cute facing forward, especially on hair that has more texture or volume.

2. The Cobra Braid – 2 Color

The Cobra braid looks like the classic cobra knot that I showed on these Gimp bracelets. They form the “braid” on both the front on the back, and on top you have a zipper-type look just like a Cobra knot would form. I like doing it with two colors – and specifically two shades of a single color – but you can definitely bring in more colors!

3. The Three Color Layered Braid

This method works best with three colors. You want an odd number so that you can cross over to the other side and get that criss-cross effect. And more than three will need to stretch too far.

Do it by looping each one with the next color, positioned on the opposite side of the headband.

4. The 3 Color ZigZag Braid

This one is pictured in the video only – I didn’t have enough ponies and wanted to try the style above as well so I did dismantle this one.

It’s accomplished by placing the ponies in two directions and looping each one over the next consecutive one on the other side for a zigzag braided effect. I did it with three colors but it can be done with any numer.

The best supplies to use for braided hair tie headbands

While there is some flexibility in the materials you use to make braided hair tie headbands, here are some pointers and key features for success.

Your pony holders

Your ideal pony holder is a no-crease small sized cotton pony holder that’s thick. This gives you good coverage while allowing for a tight “braid”.

While you CAN play with others (especially for the layered braid) you’ll want it to have these qualities.

The base headband

The base headband should be a rigid headband with a bit of width. While you can use metal headbands for this, you’ll need to go for a nice, wide one. My ideal headband for this is a rigid plastic one. You can also use satin covered ones.

I don’t recommend using one with teeth. It’ll be harder to move things around if you need to, and you’re anyway covering the teeth.

How to make braided hair tie headbands step by step tutorials

Supplies needed

• 32-35 hair ties per headband
• Rigid headbands

Process Breakdown

Method 1: Basic Braided hair tie headband

1. Wrap your hair tie around the headband in the spot where you want your braid to start. The headband should not go through the hole – you’re folding the hair tie in half over the headband.

2. Pull one side through the loop formed at the other side.

3. Pull through till it’s tight.

4. Continue adding hair ties this way until you reach the end of where you want the braid to be. All hair ties should be in the same direction for this style.

5. Start “braiding.” Pull your second hair tie through the loop of the first.

6. Grab the third and pull it through the loop of the second.

7. Continue doing this until you pull the last one through the loop of the second to last.

8. Pull that one over the end of the headband to sit next to the rest of that pony. Your “braid” is complete.

9. I find that when I make this style, I naturally make it along the side of the headband. This can look cute – it’ll face front when worn. But you can also turn it to sit on top of the headband.

Your basic braided hair tie headband is complete!

Method 2: two-color Cobra braided headband

1. Start looping ponies onto the headband in the same way. Only this time you’re alternating between two colors and alternating directions.

2. Keep going until you’ve covered the area you want your “braid” to cover.

3. You’ll be connecting the loops the same way you did above, only this time you’ll be doing it one side/one color at a time.

Finish it off the same way too.

Your cobra-style braided hair tie headband is complete!

Method 3: The Three Color Layered Braid

1. On this one, you’re alternating directions again, but alternating between three colors.

2. Work one color at a time and loop only the same colors together, zigzagging across the headband. Keep in mind that the first color you “braid” will show the least, and the last one will show the most, so choose which colors you want to be the most and least dominant.

Your layered braided hair tie headband is complete!

A’s big brothers often have sleepovers, so when we were looking for a theme for A’s fifth birthday, a “sleepover” theme was the perfect choice! This unslumber party (or “sleepunder” party) was an absolute hit and such an adorable party.

The primary activity as well as party favor was sleep mask decorating with kids – we made this easy sleep mask craft that doubled as a party favor too.

This is a hit both as a party craft but also as something for kids to make at home, at sleepaway camp, or anytime this is a fit!

The kids absolutely loved it. It was very engaging, and they spent much longer on it than anticipated. In fact, they spent so long on it that I didn’t even have time to do all the planned activities!

And they wore them for the rest of the party, and some kids even wore them to school the next day (the kids ranged from 4-5 years old).

In this post, I’ll be sharing with you how to make this sleep mask craft (which isn’t much of a tutorial – it’s self explanatory) but also my tips for decorating them with kids and setting it up as a party activity.

Tips for sleep mask decorating with kids at a party

This makes such a good party activity because:

• There’s no dry time
• It’s open-ended – kids can really be creative
• It’s special – it requires specific supplies that are more affordable in bulk and isn’t just another thing they can make at home any time
• It doubles as a part favor.

Activity Setup and Guidelines

I decided to get a stick-on varsity initial to make it special and personalized for each kid. Make sure to get enough letters for each participant (I needed two packs of initials). You can purchase letters individually.

I also got a big pack of stick-on gems. These stuck really well and did make for a semi-permanent application (kids can pull them off but they won’t come off on their own.)

When the kids arrived, they each had a plate set up with their name, a mask, and the initial on it. The gem sheets were scattered across the table. Be generous with your gems – I regret not getting two packs. They’re great for other crafts too and inexpensive, and that way kids have more choices.

I find that having an open-ended (unguided) craftivity set up for kids right when they arrive is a great way to warm them up for an at-home birthday party. It helps them jump right in when they’re stil feeling a little shy and makes them excited about what’s to come.

Since everything is effectively a sticker, the kids just jumped right in and got VERY busy. They did not need any instruction at all. They were hypnotized by the activity, dedicating themselves fully to blinging their sleep mask crafts.

Just a quick seating tip: I seated the two friends who weren’t in her class next to A and the classmates together, just to make things less intimidating for those two.

Make sure to have a sample on the table for kids to follow (the upside down w “M” one you see was my sample).

Sending them home as favors

Especially when the activity doubles as a favor like by this Dog Man party – but even when it’s just a craft-heavy party – I like to have bags prepared in advance with the kids’ names.

That way, as they complete their crafts, I can simply slip it into their bags. Most of the kids wore their masks after but I did get bags for them regardless. The masks came in bags, but most of them tore when I took the masks out so I recommend getting separate bags.

Each bag was prepared with this laser heart keychain, and two scrunchies, and had plenty of space for the sleep mask crafts and the bookmarks they created (which I’ll share at a later date).

When they finished decorating the masks, they went to the reading corner (again, I’m going to share all the details in a later post) and I collected any masks that were left behind to put in their labeled bags.

The sticker was a Canva design (the same one I used for the invitation), printed on sticker paper.

You can see that the favor bags and labels were really inexpensive. While the sleep mask craft was a bit pricier, it was balanced out by savings in other areas, AND it was both the primary entertainment and the primary favor.

More tips for making a sleep mask craft

Whether you’re crafting this at home, at camp, at a party, or for any other occasion, I figured I’d share some tips and tricks for making this.

Embellishments and ideas

The only embellishments we provided were:

• An adhesive initial per person
• Sheets of adhesive gems.

That WAS enough, but if you’d like to offer more, here are some more ideas. Some are suitable for parties, and some should only be done in a one-on-one crafting scenario.

• Adhesive shapes – many initial sets come with more chenille style stick-ons. Those can be fun too, but you’ll still only want 1-2 per person.
• Adhesive patches – again, unless doing this at home, stick with adhesive, but you can get loads of embroidered patches for a cool look.
• Glue-on gems – you can do larger glue-ons but again, you’ll need more supervision with this and it’s best for when you’re just crafting at home.
• Buttons – bigger kids can sew on fun buttons.
• Paint markers or fabric markers – kids can color and decorate their sleep masks. Just test the markers in advance of the activity.

IF you spotted this craft not for a specific occasion, but just while browsing, here are some fun times to make them, besides for an unslumber party!

• An actual sleepover party
• A sleepover with one or two friends – you can get more detailed if you have an adult handling the hot glue gun.
• A take-home activity at a larger gathering, such as a school event
• This is so cool as a get-to-know-you icebreaker at sleepover camp
• Or if you’re having an overnight for day camp
• It’s cool for pajama day at any school or camp

How to assemble this sleep mask craft

The assembly process is very basic, but you’ll enjoy seeing the kids actually putting theirs together!

Pay close attention to my guidelines for the materials to use.

You’ll need

• Sleep masks: good quality satin ones make a big difference, especially if it’s a party favor. HOWEVER, the ones I got were adult sizes and too big for preschoolers. I did run them through the sewing machine for a second to take in the elastic at the back. You can also get adjustable ones.
• Gems: get enough gems in a good mix of shapes to go around – at least 2-3 sheets per kid. You’ll have extras for another project, but you want the kids to be able to choose.
• Initials: one for each kid. Double names still got one.

Tutorial

1. Stick the initial in the center of the mask.

2. Decorate with gems.

That is all! No dry time, just stickers. The kids had a blast! I hope you enjoyed!

Since A was born, I’ve made her stacks of hair accessories. First I made her the cutest baby hair bands, then we moved on to endless clips for those little pigtails.

As she grew older, she decided that she liked headbands again. And while it hardly contains her hair, I decided to treat her to some new ones for Passover!

Today, I’m going to teach you how to make a simple DIY ribbon headband – in literally minutes. You’re using the ribbon to make a small rosette placed off-center on a stiff headband, for a gorgeous and classy accessory that can be customized as you wish.

You can add more style if you’d like with a button (more ideas below) and switch up the base headband to really make it your own.

Tips for making a DIY ribbon headband

Choosing your ribbon

Your best ribbons for making a DIY ribbon headband will be fabric ones, but the size and texture matters a LOT.

I started off with 1.5 inch chiffon ribbon and it came out fabulous. I pulled out a ribbon that I thought was similar, but I guess was closer to 2 inches, and it was just huge. This one was an organza one that was less stiff – and yes, the chiffon was quite soft, but still had enough structure to hold.

Think about it this way: your rosette will be almost double the size of your ribbon width. So a 1.5 inch ribbon makes an almost 3 inch in bow – which is quite large.

And while you’re scrunching it a bit and that gives it structure, if it’s too wide, the parts that don’t lay on the headband will be floppy, unless it’s a bit thicker.

Embellishing it

You might get a perfectly clean, scrunched center on your DIY ribbon headband, or you might not. Either way, it loos so pretty when you add a little something to the center! I added a big shiny gold button to mine that perfectly picked up the metallics from our bronze shimmery ribbon.

It was a holdover in my button box and it made this A’s favorite headband that she asks to wear every day.

You can pair other embellishments with the appropriate ribbons. Pair something more sporty with a felt pom pom, pair velvet with a rhinestone embellished piece, pair tulle with a crystal bead.

The base

For my base headband, I used two options. One was a fabric wrapped and padded thin headband. The other was a soft plastic black blank one. The problem was that the black one wasn’t sticking and I couldn’t figure out why!

Turns out it was actually silicone. Silicone is a nonstick surface – hot glue simply will not hold.

If you have silicone coated headbands, you can try other glues, but I’d actually suggest making a felt circle and sandwiching the headband between the rosette and the circle, gluing the circle to the rosette on either side of the headband. It’ll be able to slide around but not while worn.

Or, just stick to fabric coated ones. You can also get flat foldover elastic or pantyhose style headbands to turn these into infant headbands. Read reviews so you’re getting good, soft ones and not stiff ones.

How to make a DIY ribbon headband

Supplies

• Fabric Ribbon – something like 1.5 inch with frayed edges is perfect
• Fabric scissors
• A button for the center
• Needle and thread
• Base headband (avoid silicone/nonstick textures)
• Hot glue gun – I used Surebonder’s Hot Glue Pen for this.

Process

1. Cut your ribbon to about 18-24 inches, depending how full you want your rosette to be. Thread your needle and knot the end. Start sewing a running stitch along the edge of your ribbon (but not too close – leave about 1/4 inch “seam allowance”. You’re just going in and out. The distance between your stitches and stitch size will determine the size of the cinches.

Every few stitches, push back and gather the ribbon – meaning, pull the running stitch tight so it gathers the fabric at that end.

2. Keep going until you reach the end and thread through your starting point once. If you’re finding that it’s full enough and you have extra ribbon, simply trim the excess and proceed with this step.

3. Thread through the center a few times – just sewing the ends together in a few directions around that center point.

4. When you’re done, finish off your thread and trim. Glue a button or other embellishment over the center.

5. Glue your rosette to the headband base.

“Mommy, I really want a pickle necklace. A sour pickle necklace! Sour pickles are yummy. They’re not really sour. They’re yum.” is an unconventional request coming from a four-and-a-half year old, but…. challenge accepted!

My kids rarely ask me to make anything – besides for Cricut shirts, that they ask for all the time – and so if my child will present me with the ultimate challenge, how can I say no?

The cool thing about making a polymer clay pickle necklace is that it’s incredibly simple, and you don’t really need to have much experience working with clay to get it to look really good.

I did debate making this from air dry clay – but I wanted to have it done in one session (no drying time.) I will, though, share a basic air dry clay adaptation. If you’re more of an air dry clay person, check out my list of things to make with air drying clay.

One of the coolest things about this beginner polymer clay craft is that it really doesn’t require specialty equipment! It requires just polymer clay and basic hand tools for clay (which can really be improvised with things around the house of the correct shape.) Any clay tool that I recommend in the supplies list can be replaced if you really don’t want to invest in it.

Two ways to make a sour pickle necklace

My original idea was to make a cartoonish pickle necklace, with a “sour face”. And while it did come out quite cute, it’s not perfect (my technique isn’t 100% with working with tiny parts yet) and so I decided to try it again, but in simple. It also feels like not the thing I want my sweet little daughter to wear – and the simple pickle is just so much cuter.

I did include instructions for making both, though. You also have the choice of whether to add the “tail” or not. Again, I REALLY prefer the simple one.

It also lends itself to adding more realistic touches if you’d like, with finishes like chalk pastels. It can be mixed with classier jewelry for a quirky little touch without being overly tacky.

Tips for beginners making this pickle necklace

One of my things I always like to share before approaching a tutorial that I’m not an expert in is: I have a general expertise in crafting. I have done many different craft types in the past, and am at an intermediate level with most.

One of the advantages of teaching from this perspective is the ability to understand what the beginner needs to be taught, rather than what might be thought of as “understood” or a given with a teacher who’s deeper into the journey.

I do my best to do due diligence and not mis-teach anything. However, if you see a bigger expert than me teach something that contradicts my advice (especially since this is mostly about idea sharing, not technique sharing) definitely go with theirs – or at least try both!

However, as someone with a high level of experience in general crafting, there are some tips I can teach from experience here.

Mixing the right colors

I worked with a pack of clay that only had a bright green. While it might be tempting to pick up a pack of a zillion colors, you’re better off getting a high quality clay with fewer colors and mixing up your own. I used DAS Smart air dry clay, and wanted to get a much more muted clay.

This is where color theory comes into play. You can mix in black to get it darker, but it will give you a dull, muddy color. Instead, you mix in a complementary shade to majorly tone down your color. I mixed in too much red, so I pinched off a piece of that and mixed it with a fresh batch of green to get this pickle-perfect shade.

Connecting parts

One rookie mistake when crafting anything with clay is to assume that clay is adhesive and will stick to itself. In reality, you do need to use some sort of liquid clay to connect parts – and usually you’ll want to distress the connection points first. This can be challenging when working with very small pieces.

The basic pickle version of this necklace doesn’t require connecting parts, however the sour face pickle does.

The screw-eye that turns this pickle necklace into a pendant has something to hold it, but it can unscrew. I do recommend baking your clay with it inside, unscrewing it, and gluing it in place after.

Adapting this tutorial for air dry clay

If you want to stick to air dry clay for this, you definitely can! While you can definitely color your plain white air drying clay, you will get a more muted color that way. I recommend simply painting your finished project with craft acrylics!

You will definitely want to seal your project since acrylic paints can chip. You can use polymer clay sealers on air drying clay too.

You’ll also want to avoid very fine parts as air dry clay works better with thicker creations – so skip that tail!

How to make a (sour) pickle necklace

You’ll need

• Polymer clay – a deep green or green and red. I used this set from DAS
• Basic clay tools – I used this tool set from DAS
• An acrylic board
• If adding details, liquid clay
• Something to bake on (a clay-dedicated baking pan, for example)
• A screw eye
• A pendant bail
• Glue (such as Weldbond or E6000)

Step by Step Tutorial

1. If you don’t have the right color, mix it up. I added some red to bright green to get this pickle-y green.

As you mix it with your hands, you’re also conditioning it.

2. Take a small piece (about the size of a small olive). Place it on a smooth surface.

3. Use your acrylic board to roll it into a small cylinder. The benefit of using the board for this is that you avoid fingerprints. Avoiding using fingers to shape as much as possible helps to minimize prints.

4. Round off the ends (I did do this part with my hands.)

5. Use the acrylic board to roll very gently a little more on one end, tilting it slightly, to give you that slightly irregular shape.

6. Use your fingers to gently curve it and smooth any creases.

7. If you’d like to add a tail, form a little hole. Create a thin rope, dab a bit of glue into the hole, and insert the tail, using the pick tool to help you.

8. Use the ball tip tool to add texture.

9. If you’d like you can create a face. Make two tiny white balls (mine are too big!) Add them to the pickle using liquid glue. When you press it on, you’ll naturally form two tiny wells for the pupil.

10. Use the pick tool to fill those two tiny holes with two tiny black balls – of course, using liquid clay to connect it.

11. I did mess up a bit with the mouth (I should have taken it off and redone it) but it’s a rope, connected the same way. Use a smoother tool to connect that. The nose is a ball of the same color, formed as I connected it between the eyes. I pressed it in with the pick tool where the nostrils should be.

12. Screw in your eye hook. Bake according to package instructions, remove the eye hook, and glue back in.

In the 90’s and early 00’s, before we had phones to keep our hands busy, we had “fidget” crafts. You know what I mean… Friendship bracelets. Boondoggle. Holographic pastel seed bead bracelets.

Among these crafts that work to keep the hands busy is the origami star from paper strips. A simple folding process makes a fun little puffy star – and is easy to make by the dozen.

The paper strips can be purchased pre-cut and glued together on one end so that they don’t make a mess. It may take a few tries to really get the hang of it, but the more you make, the more you’ll want to – and the better they’ll be coming out!

What to use your puffy origami star from paper strips for

So is this an exclusively “fidget” craft or is it actually useful? Honestly, most people make it just for fun. But yes, it can be useful, and here are some of my favorite ways.

To make it look really nice, use different shades of yellow (it’ll look like a solid color but give a little texture). Or choose a cohesive color scheme.

Confetti

If you’re decorating for Christmas, for a summer picnic, a fairy party, graduation, or anything where stars are a fit, you can use these as less-messy confetti. Team up to make piles of it and scatter them on the table, toss them in the air…

Fill a jar decor

On that note, you can also make them to fill decorative containers (such as candle holders, cylinder vases) as centerpieces. You’ll definitely need a lot of them to fill ‘er up – but this is one of those crafts that is addictive and fun to make a lot of!

“Pick a chore/activity/wish jar”

The stars can easily be folded, so you can write anything you’d like on it before folding! This is a fun way to do any “pick a” type jars – whether it’s for a family or a party! You can combine this with the idea above, writing a fortune or wish on each and having partygoers pick one from the centerpiece.

How to make puffy origami stars

I’m going to go into as much nitty gritty details as I can in case you don’t have access to the images, but the photos really say it best. First, if you’d like you can watch the YouTube video:

1. Start with a paper strip. Lay it flat on your surface.

2. Create a loose knot, leaving about 1cm on one side.

3. Flatten out your knot into a pentagon shape. This is the base of your origami star from paper strips. Proportionally, the piece sticking out should be slightly longer than the diameter of the pentagon.

4. Fold that extra bit over to the other side, so that it’s flush on the bottom of the pentagon and reaches the other side that connects to the bottom.

5. Tuck whatever is leftover between the layers of the knotted pentagon and the extra strip.

6. Now you’re going to start “wrapping” that extra bit of paper around your pentagon until it’s finished. Again, this is something that’ll become easier as you make more as it requires some “instinct” with the direction that you’re wrapping in. Fold over your paper so that it reaches the side opposite.

Fold it under again to the opposite side.

Fold it over and under again until you only have a little bit – not enough for a complete fold.

7. Tuck that little extra bit between the layers of your star. Crease into place.

8. Use your nail to poke the sides – between the corners – in, allowing the front and back of the star to puff out. Again, it might make a few tries to really get the hang of this, but once you do it a few times, you’ll “nail” it (ouch).

Repeat with all five sides to complete your origami star from paper strips!
