I love looking at all the adorable mini-sized craft items that are available in Dollar Tree and the like, but I was never quite sure what to do with them. How much mini-stuff can I possibly use?

Then I heard about the tiered tray concept – a collection of small decor items displayed together. If you haven’t heard of this, go google it now!

When I saw these little pallets, I knew that they would be perfect for this type of display – they’re rather small for standing alone, but together with other items they will make a great centerpiece. And the wooden slats immediately brought to mind the stripes on the U.S. flag!

Or maybe I just have stars and stripes on my mind because Independence Day is coming up so soon.

If you don’t have a tiered tray, that’s fine – the concept can work in all kinds of formats. You can collect themed items on a tray that isn’t tiered, or on a shelf, or maybe a porch railing or mantelpiece.

The point is that by combining small items around a theme you create a really visually interesting display consisting of objects that are easy to make and easy to store when you’re done with them. For instance, if you’ve chosen a seasonal theme and want to swap out new objects for each season.

I made this flag-themed display piece using items from the dollar store, but you can improvise with what your personal stash, Amazon, or local store has available.

For example, if they don’t have mini pallets in stock you can use masking tape to create your own stripes on a blank rectangle or square. If you can’t find craft foam sheets, you can use felt or cardstock or any other flattish material. You can add glitter or glitter glue to a solid-colored white, gray, or silver sheet. You get the idea.

This craft is fun to do and can work for all ages, from child to adult. Get your supplies together and let’s start!

What you’ll need

How to Make this 4th of July Tiered Tray Decor

1. Use a paintbrush to paint the first and third slats of the pallets with white craft paint.

2. Paint the second and fourth slats of the pallets with red craft paint.

Let the paint dry and apply a second coat if necessary. Set the pallets aside to dry while working on the next steps.

3. Download and print the pallet flag patterns and cut them out. Trace the rectangle twice on a blue foam sheet. Cut out both rectangles.

4. Trace the star pattern three times and the USA letters once each on the back of your silver glitter foam sheet. Make sure to hold the S so that it will face forward when it is cut out (the other letters and shapes are the same in front and back, so can be traced either way)

5. Glue a blue rectangle to the end of each pallet. Glue the three stars onto one blue rectangle, and the USA letters onto the other.

6. Tie twine or ribbon into bows and glue them to the center of a star and the letter A.
