DIY Chalkboard Cell Phone Case * Moms and Crafters

Make this adorable and easy DIY chalkboard cell phone case to add a little character to your device! I mixed things up a little bit, allowing for a mix of black, red, and white to give a bit of a retro feel. Yup, retro on a pretty 21st-century device – who cares?

I’ve never spent much on phone cases. Really, all you need to do if you want a super cute case is to buy a plain one and upgrade it yourself.

The more up-to-date your phone is, the more a plain case is likely to cost. But it will probably still cost much less than a cooler case, and it won’t have a personality that reflects YOU all the way.

The idea of this chalkboard cell phone case is that you can switch out the message as you like. You can put an initial, jot down a phone number, or write yourself a little reminder on the back of your phone.

I used a chalk marker to write my messages. It does need to dry for a few minutes, or it will smudge in your purse. You can use a regular piece of chalk, but the message won’t be as sharp. A quick swipe with a baby wipe, and another with a dry cloth cleans your case for a new message.

I added a stripe of nail polish to separate the chalkboard part from the rest. You don’t need to do this, though it adds a fun touch. Nail polish is really hard-wearing when it comes to crafting purposes. You can see more nail polish crafts here.

What you need to make a chalkboard cell phone case:

A clear case to match your phone (Search: “Your phone model” + clear case)
Decoupage medium
Brush (one for the decoupage, and one for the paint – or wash it and dry it in between.)
Scrapbook paper in your favorite print (the one I used is from this pad)
Chalkboard paint
Chalk marker or chalk
Scissors, painters tape, and a pen for tracing
(Optional) Nail polish in a coordinating or contrasting color

How to make a DIY chalkboard cell phone cases:

1. Trace your case on the back of the paper.

2. Cut it out – or as much of it as you’re going to use. Keep in mind that it should be slightly smaller than the actual case, as it will be sitting on the inside.

3. Apply a thin layer of decoupage medium to the printed side of your paper, and smooth it out on the inside of your case.

4. Add a strip of painter’s tape above the area where you want the chalkboard to be. Smooth it down and secure it with your fingernail, to prevent paint from seeping underneath.

5. Apply a few layers of chalkboard paint, following instructions on the bottle, until you are satisfied with how it looks.

6. Once it’s dry, pull off the painter’s tape gently. Apply a little nail polish at the border, if you’d like.

Your chalkboard cell phone case is ready for a special message to be written on it!

Remind yourself to call Mom. My toddler does that for me every minute of the day, so I’ll switch that to “call mother-in-law” on my phone…

I love how it came out, especially since it literally took minutes to put together (besides for drying time). I had lots of fun playing with the designs.
