This guide to Cricut materials for beginners is designed to teach you everything you need to know about which materials to use with your Cricut. If you’re just getting your feet wet with your Cricut, and beginning to explore this new area of crafting, you may find the selection of materials overwhelming. You may be used to crafting with paper and other basic craft supplies, but the world of vinyl is new to most Cricut crafters.

What is the difference between the categories of vinyl?

Which is the best type?

Do you need to use Cricut brand materials? Are there any benefits to it?

Which materials should you start out with?

And the most pressing question: is dollar store vinyl any good?

Today I’m going to try to answer these questions more thoroughly.

Vinyl vs Iron-on

What is vinyl?

Vinyl is a plastic material that is extremely popular among Cricut crafters. When you hear the word “vinyl” in relation to Cricut crafting, it’s likely referencing thin sheets of adhesive vinyl. It’s very flexible and “drapes” or wraps the surface of your craft. It can essentially become a part of your surface.

Vinyl comes in both permanent and removable varieties. This refers to the level of tack. Think duct tape vs. paper tape. Which one you want depends on your project.

Even removable vinyl can be relatively permanent on some surfaces. For example, if you use it on paper, it’ll be quite secure, and won’t come off without lifting the paper.

Permanent vinyl, when cured properly, can be waterproof and dishwasher safe!

Vinyl is typically used on smooth surfaces. Some examples of crafts using vinyl:

• Wall art on glass
• Personalized lunch boxes
• Labels for plastic or glass containers
• Fun mugs

What is Iron-on?

Iron-on is a vinyl material that, as described, is ironed onto the craft surface. It’s not adhesive until it’s heat activated.

The main use of iron-on is for garments, such as t-shirts. You can also use iron-on on surfaces such as canvas, metal, leather or faux leather, wood, cardboard, and more. It works best on slightly textured surfaces (think about how much texture fabric has).

Iron-on is a permanent material. When pressed correctly, it should last through many washes.

What’s the Difference between iron-on and HTV?

This is a trick question. They’re exactly the same thing. HTV stands for Heat Transfer Vinyl. Cricut calls their HTV “Iron on“. As a new Cricut crafter, I actually found this to be very user friendly and appreciated it.

Smart Materials vs. Regular materials

Smart Materials are a newer feature that Cricut offers. Smart materials are available for Joy machines and Maker 3 or Explore 3 machines.

They have a stiffer backing that don’t need to be placed on a mat to cut them! Not only does this save loads of time, it also prevents inconsistent cuts caused by residue on mats. In my experience, it’s easier to weed (remove the outlines of your design). And one of my favorite features: you can make much longer, larger cuts, because you can simply load the roll and go!

The biggest limitation of Smart Materials is that you need to have compatible machine to get the mat free function. However, I find that I run through much fewer mats since I started using Smart Materials.

You can use Smart Materials the same way you use regular materials – on a mat – with any Cricut machine.

When purchasing Cricut Smart Materials, make sure that you get the correct size for your machine. The Joy needs Joy materials for the matless feature to be used, and the Maker 3 and Explore 3 use the standard sized Smart Materials.

Different types of Vinyl and Iron-on Finishes

Vinyl and iron-on come in different finishes. These help you get a different type of look – from classy to colorful, from subtle to glam.

Glossy vs. matte – Vinyl comes in both glossy and matte finishes.

Glitter – Both can be purchased with glitter finishes. Glitter materials tend to be harder to work with, but they have such a gorgeous finished look.

Metallic – If you’re a beginner, metallic materials (vinyl and Iron-on) are a fabulous way to add shine to your project.

Holographic – Holographic vinyl and Iron-on are another cool way to add some sparkle. They are easier to work with than glitter and high on the shine factor.

Glow in the Dark – Make your projects extra special with glow in the dark vinyl and Iron-on! I love this for bedroom decals, pajamas, and costumes.

Cricut Materials vs. Other Brands

I’ve pretty much been using Cricut materials straight down the line since I started Cricut crafting. But to help you understand what the differences might be between Cricut and other brands, I picked up some other brands and tested them.

Top perks of Cricut Materials

Here are some of the reasons that I’ve mainly been using Cricut Materials:

Tested and true: Cricut materials are tested thoroughly to be high quality and lasting. They are tested to work smoothly with the Cricut, they are stress tested for durability, and they are tested to be safe for their intended purpose.

Calibrated for Cricut machines: The Cricut settings are set for Cricut materials. The materials are designed specifically for Cricut machines. I haven’t had to play much with the pressure of each setting – I simply set it to the Cricut material listed when I cut and it works. This works for the EasyPress settings too!

Smart Materials: Smart materials – mat-free materials – were a game changer for me. If you’re a “craft on the fly” type who doesn’t have time but always wants to make something new, Smart Materials save so much time. When I was making goody bags for A’s birthday the other day, I went from having to use ten sheets of black cardstock to simply loading a roll of black removable vinyl and watching it go!

Innovation: Cricut doesn’t just make a material and let it go. They are constantly innovating and coming up with better options, specialty finishes and materials, and other cool innovative materials that suit a diverse crafter’s needs.

Cricut vs. Dollar Store

Dollar Store vinyl is not a good, durable vinyl. It called “vinyl paper” and it’s thinner and more delicate. I though it might be a good option for practicing.

Based on my trial, it’s simply not vinyl. It may work as an adhesive paper, however the cut settings I tried for what it is simply messed it up.

I pivoted to making the design I was planning for it – a trinket tray made on the reverse of a wood art board – using Cricut Holographic Vinyl with beautiful results. Cricut Holographic Vinyl is a metallic material that is also quite delicate, so it was a good comparison point. And it’s got all the bling we need!

Cricut Iron-on vs. Other Brand’s HTV

I was curious to compare Cricut Iron-on with the leading brand of easy-to-weed HTV that I see people using, and that the craft store I shop at carries. I conducted my tests using the new Glow-in-the-dark Iron-on.

My main goal was to compare weeding it, based on the product claims. The other brand had a head start, as it was a darker color which makes weeding easier and cut marks more visible. They were equally easy to weed – including the tiny dot on the “i” in the Cricut project – using the BrightPad Go to illuminate my cut lines, making them both fabulous options as far as weeding is concerned.

Then, I compared ironing them on using my Easypress 3. The Cricut brand was at a starting point disadvantage in my experiment, as it was ironed on to a smaller surface, with seams interfering. The other one was ironed onto a flatter, larger tee.

This is where I really advantage the perks of Cricut materials being compatible with the Cricut device settings. I used the Cricut Heat app to set the Everyday Iron-on setting for the easy to weed HTV, and the Glow in the Dark Iron-on setting for the Cricut Glow in the Dark Iron-on.

The Cricut turned out to be a win, with the backing peeling off perfectly, with no stickiness or resistance.

The other brand pulled a little as it was a bit melted onto the backing. It stuck to my shirt well, with slight rippling at the edges.

Cricut Vinyl vs. Other Leading Brands

First, I made some decals for my Cricut using Removable Smart Vinyl in Matte Metallic Champagne. It not only cut smoothly using Cricut settings, but it adhered beautifully despite being a very delicate design – and being a lower tack vinyl.

I headed to the craft store and picked up some open stock sheets of a very popular permanent vinyl for my experiments. Right off the bat, it felt more papery thanks to the backing. I had to sift through to choose sheets without existing creases. It seems the more papery backing doesn’t lend itself well to staying perfectly flat.

Then, I tried to make a mug with it. The silver sheet that I used cut well, save for one area where it lifted, thanks to the imperfections in my sheet. I had planned it as a gift, which would need to be more polished, but I decided to proceed with it as a gift for myself… so I snipped off the mistake.

Weeding went well, although I could tell that it was a bit thinner than I was used to.

Adhering it to my cup was a bit more challenging than expected. As I pulled back the backing, making sure to slide it along the cup and not to pull away, it lifted in spots. I was able to correct it and re-adhere, using my weeding tool for help.

However, in the final pull, the outline broke. I was able to salvage the rest and just pulled off the outline.

I think that if I use this brand again, I’d stick to the simplest projects, such as quick labels. However, I very much prefer Cricut vinyl, especially their Smart vinyl.

In summary: there are many brands that make great materials for your Cricut. However, I’ve seen hands-on the benefits of using Cricut materials with the settings designed for them, and for the purposes for which they were created.

To save myself time and material wasted, I still plan to stick to buying Cricut materials.

More materials to explore with your Cricut

While I’ve been talking lots about vinyl Cricut materials, I’d like to briefly run through some of the other things you can cut with your Cricut, including some that Cricut makes.

Paper & Cardstock

You can use paper and cardstock for all sorts of crafts. Cutting paper with your Cricut is a fabulous way to create party supplies and cake toppers. You can see the rainbow birthday party decorations we made for A’s first birthday as well as the rainbow cake topper.

Paper doesn’t have the same wipeable, durable finish as vinyl. It’s best for one-time-use crafts in most applications.

You can also make paper flowers using the Cricut, and I’ve seen crafters put together magnificent layered paper shadow box artwork.

I’m a big fan of Cricut cardstock. It has a solid core (making it perfect for paper flowers) and a subtle linen-like texture. It’s not very rigid and has an almost fabric-like effect.

Felt, Leather, and Fabric

The Maker is compatible with more blade types that cut through felt, leather, and fabric fabulously. You can also cut certain variations of these on other machines. However, the Maker-only rotary blade does the best job with felt and knit-backed faux leather, and is the only way to cut fabric without bonding it first. You can cut thinner leather with a deep point blade on all full-sized machines, however you can cut thicker leather using the knife blade.

Cricut felt cuts nicely even with the fine point blade. Cricut faux leather does as well. These materials were designed to use with the Cricut, making them the easiest to cut.

Insert Cards

With the Joy, Cricut launched insert cards – the quickest, easiest ways to make greeting cards. Recently, they also released a special mat to make insert cards with Explore and Maker machines.

These are so much fun, and a great way to make on-the-spot cards for any needs! Just cut (and potentially write) and then assemble it without glue in seconds.

Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock

Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock is possibly one of the most underrated Smart materials. It’s not actually paper – it’s a thick cardstock.

It makes assembly so much easier since you don’t need to glue! And you don’t need to use a mat if you’re using it with the Joy, Maker 3, or Explore 3 machines. I just wish they made it in a much larger color palette.

Cricut materials to stock up on when starting out

There are two approaches to craft supplies: buy what you need when you need it or keep a stash handy. I personally like to have what I need at my fingertips for when the crafting bug bites.

I’m sharing a list of basic materials that’s the equivalent of stocking a rainbow pack of paper. You buy the more specialty items for specific products and keep the basics handy. I also recommend picking up a few of your favorites to top it off. I find lots of my inspiration in materials.

So, for example, you’ll want to have neutrals and primary colors of each basic material you plan to use in addition to your favorite specialties. Glitter iron-on inspired some shirts for my kids. Glow in the dark vinyl inspired some fun decals for my boys’ bedroom.

Iron-on in neutrals, metallics, and primaries

If you plan to make t-shirts or canvas signs, stock up on iron-on materials!

I recommend starting with 12×12 sheets of primary colors and starter rolls of black and white.

I use lots of metallic iron-on as a neutral as well.

Permanent and Removable Vinyl in neutrals, metallics, and primaries

If you plan to label containers permanently and make other dishwasher-safe items, such as mugs, custom plates, water bottles, and more, stock up on permanent vinyl! If you plan to make decals for walls or cars, label containers temporarily, or make other temporary items, get removable vinyl. I recommend having both handy, at least in a few colors.

Again, starting with sheets in primary colors, rolls of black and white, and your favorite metallic is a great way to go.

I absolutely love the subtle metallic of Champagne Smart Vinyl. It’s a gorgeous, elegant neutral and goes with everything without looking garish.

A few specialty rolls of each

To expand your Cricut materials repertoire, add a few specialty rolls to your craft room. Some of my favorites are:

A daisy chain beaded bracelet is a fun first beading project for kids and tweens – and this name or initial version is just so much better! This blog post was created in partnership with Horizon Group USA and Craft Project Ideas.

Kids and tweens love learning new “real” skills and beading is a favorite first. But did you know that there is a beading technique that’s so simple even young kids can master it?

As a tween, I loved making daisy chain beaded bracelets. It feels good to know a “trick” beyond just straight line beading.

So if your tween is ready to learn a new beading skill, these daisy chain beaded bracelets are a score!

And just to add a fun little extra flair, we turned these into name bracelets. Eva and Naya both have short names, so we used their full name. You can also stick to initials!

All the supplies we needed, besides for some tape to seal the end (or tape it to a surface) and scissors were in Horizon’s Just My Style Ultimate Jewelry Center.

You have a huge variety of beads in very classic shapes to give you versatile crafting supplies.

The Ultimate Jewelry Center is a really fantastic open-ended craft kit. It’s got great ideas included (and yes, the basic daisy chain – without the name – is featured in the instruction booklet!)

And for the ultimate in customization: there are blank circle beads with decals you can add. So if you’re not finding the letters you want in the colors you want, you can make them!

Just like many jewelry making projects for kids, daisy chain beaded bracelets can be open-ended from the bead colors, shapes, and accents you use! The Ultimate Jewelry Center comes with different finishes, bicones and round, translucent and opaque beads… all of which can be used to make these.

We also switched  between placing all the name beads together and interspersing them between the daisies. I only recommend the second option if you’re doing initials, as it doesn’t really read smoothly when it’s on the wrist.

This daisy chain beaded bracelet uses an elastic (which you get plenty of in your kit) so it can easily slide  on and off. It’s is a great way to bead for younger children, who won’t have the dexterity to close clasps on their own, and who might want a little break from their bling.

How to make a beaded daisy chain bracelet

1: Sort your beads in the lid of the Ultimate Jewelry Center. Choose a color for your center, petals, and accent.

The center and petal beads should be small, but make sure they’re the same size.

2: Plan beads for your name or initials too. For example, use sticker and the flat beads to spell out “Eva,” or use square alphabet beads to spell out “Naya.” Then, cut a piece of elastic about two feet long. Tape it down to your work surface.

3: Thread a few of your accent color beads.

4: Continue the pattern by threading on 4 petal beads and then a center bead.

5: Take the end of your elastic. Thread it back through the first petal bead, from the direction that the elastic exited when you first added it, towards the accent beads. 

6: Pull the elastic tight so that the petal beads start forming a circle around the center bead. 

Thread on another 2 petal beads.

7: Thread your elastic back through the bottom petal bead. 

8: Pull the elastic until those last 2  petals sit around the center to form your first daisy!

9: Add another accent bead. Repeat Steps 4-8 to add another daisy and then add another accent bead.

10: Thread on your name or initials.

11: Finish off with an accent bead, a daisy, an accent bead, a daisy, and three accent beads.

If your bracelet isn’t big enough, just add more accent beads to the end. Or remove the end accent beads, slide your design over, and add more daisies! 

Just make sure to place a piece of paper tape at the end of your elastic that you’re not working on so  that the beads don’t fall off.

12: Knot your elastic tightly and trim it to complete your bracelet! Ask an adult to dab a bit of glue to the knot to make it more secure.

Tip:  Vary your pattern! Place daisies between each letter bead if you’re larger beads or spelling out a longer name.

How to Make T-shirts with Cricut using Different Materials

There are so many different ways to make t-shirts with a Cricut cutting machine! It’s one of the simpler things to make with Cricut and it’s even easier to do using the Cricut EasyPress 3 and the Cricut Heat app!

To start with, I created two shirts using two different methods: Infusible Ink and Iron-on. To give you more insight into shirt-making with Cricut, I created a layered design with the Iron-on.

But before I elaborate on that, I want to give you a rundown of the different types of materials you can use, as well as tips for placing your design.

What types of iron-on materials can be used?

Shirts will always be made using iron-on materials so that you can seal the design onto your t-shirt. There are different types of iron-on (or heat transfer) materials:

• Everyday Iron-on – A classic finish in a solid color that’s compatible with all Cricut cutting machines. Use it with a StandardGrip mat. This can be used under other colors and layered freely.
• Textured iron-on – Special finishes allow you to make super cool shirts. In this post, I used holographic iron-on. Another favorite is glitter. This can be layered but should be used as the top layer.

• Smart iron-on – Both regular and specialty iron-ons come in Smart Iron-on too. Smart Iron-on comes with a stiffer backing for cutting quicker and easier without a mat. It’s compatible with the Cricut Maker 3 and Explore 3 machines. Smaller specially-branded rolls can be used with the Cricut Joy too.
• Infusible Ink – This is a whole new category of heat-transfer material. Instead of bonding the material itself to your shirt as an external layer, ink is transferred to your shirt to actually “dye” the surface fibers with the design. The ink is on a carrier sheet and is transferred using high heat. The color is incredibly vivid, the designs gorgeous, and the result super professional. Higher polyester content and lighter colors show up the best. I recommend sticking with Cricut’s Infusible Ink blanks for this.

The truth is, you’ll probably read “rules” in a number of places as to the placement of the design. Personally, I like when it’s sized smaller. Some people will prefer that it covers the shirt. I believe that there are no hard and fast rules as long as it’s aesthetically pleasing. And opinions on that will always vary.

I will share some guidelines for those of you who want rules. There are a few points you’ll be measuring:

Under the armpits:

Choose one point and be consistent on each side. I like mine to have 2-3 inches of leeway there. Keep in mind that the human body – especially a woman’s – isn’t flat. So if you make your design go too close to the armpits, it won’t fully be visible.

You can try on the shirt and determine the size while it’s being worn if you want to be very accurate.

From the neck:

You don’t want the design to come too close to the neckline. Where you place it depends on the type of neck. For a typical round-neck shirt:

• For babies and toddlers place your designs about one inch from the neckline
• For kids place it about 1.5-2 inches below the neckline
• For adults, aim for three inches below the neckline.

Or try some alternate layouts: for very small designs, place it on a shirt pocket, or where the pocket would be.

You can place it on an arm, in a corner – wherever you’d like.

The truth is that I measured my designs and chose a placement, but after I cut it, I changed my mind. It’s good to measure to get the general sizing right.

How to make T-shirts with Cricut Infusible Ink

Infusible Ink t-shirts are a caliber of their own. The ink dyes the shirt fibers, making for a permanent finish. They come in transfer sheets: thick paper with a backing that has the ink on the surface.

Infusible Ink transfer sheets come in a fabulous selection of prints. You can get it in solids, but where’s the fun in that? I recommend solids for most layered designs and prints for single-layer, bold designs.

As you can see, I like to design with very bold, solid graphics to really bring out the pattern of the transfer sheet.

To make this Cricut Cutie shirt, I chose the design and then added it to a background. The original design is an outline of the Cutie. I reversed it with a hexagon in back so that I get more pattern.

To ensure success when making t-shirts with Infusible Ink:

• The design shouldn’t shift at all while pressing. Use light pressure as recommended.
• Tape down your design using Cricut’s heat-resistant tape.
• Be careful that your surface is free of lint and other debris. They will interfere with the transfer.
• You only need to peel off the top layer (ink portion) of the cut design while weeding. It’s okay if some white parts remain on the backing. However, make sure that those edges are clean and that there aren’t little bits sticking up.
• Place a piece of cardstock inside your shirt.
• Use the enclosed butcher paper to protect your blank from the high heats.
• Think of the transfer ink as translucent. That means that it’ll be added to the color of the shirt, and won’t cover it. If your shirt is gray it’ll dull the colors. You may prefer it that way. Yellow will add a yellow tone to all colors. I used white, which keeps the colors brightest. White portions of the transfer (such as the stars in the galaxy print) remain the same white.

How to make layered t-shirts with Cricut

Iron-on is a relatively simple material to use. If you follow the guidelines in the Cricut Heat app, your design should transfer beautifully.

Make sure to pay attention to peel temperature. This refers to whether you peel off the backing when your design is still warm or cooled off.

To layer a design, you’ll want to press the first layer for half the time. Remove the backing when it’s cooled off. Place your second layer. Make sure to put the backing from the first back on so that your first layer is covered before pressing again!

Press for the full time and finish it off.

Specialty layers (such as the holographic one featured here) should always go on top.

How to Make T-shirts with Cricut: Step by Step

Ready for the beginner friendly step-by-step tutorial? You can find a printable version at the end of this post too.

What you need

For both shirts:

• Cricut Maker 3 or similar Cricut cutting machine
• Fine Point Blade
• Cricut EasyPress 3 12×10 in (recommended) or similar EasyPress
• EasyPress mat (make sure it’s compatible with the size of your EasyPress)
• Weeding Tool Set
• Recommended: Cricut BrightPad Go to make weeding so much easier! You can read my review and what Cricut BrightPad is used for here.
• Cricut cutting ruler
• Cricut heat-resistant tape

For the layered shirt:

• Smart Iron-on in Ocean
• Smart Iron-on in Holographic Blue
• Cotton T-shirt in navy
• Recommended: Cricut roll holder

For the Infusible Ink shirt:

• Infusible Ink transfer sheet patterns, Galaxtic Stars

Setting it up in Design Space

I linked my designs above, however, here’s the step-by-step for laying out the Cutie shirt just so that you can learn!

1. Find the Cutie under images and the Hexagon under shapes.

2. Place the Cutie as you’d like it to be over the hexagon, resizing them as needed. Select both layers and choose “slice.”

3. Remove the layers you don’t want. The hands are cut off – not cute enough for a Cutie!

4. Add another Cutie to the scene to fix this issue. Make sure it’s the same size as the original. Click Contour.

5. Hide all contours and enable only the insides of the hands.

6. Place the hands in the correct spot. It creates a “ghost” outline effect. Select both and “attach” so that they cut as a single unit, in the right place.

7. I used the same “contour” tool to make a second layer using only the solid text for the “Must Make Stuff” shirt. When you’re ready to send your artwork to cut, click “Make it”. Make sure to turn mirror on on all heat transfer designs! Choose with or without mat depending on whether or not your material uses a mat.

Cutting it

1. Load your Smart materials into the roll holder and send to cut.

2. For the Infusible Ink design, place the sheet on your mat. Use a Brayer to adhere it well. Note: the color appears more faded before it transfers. The heat will brighten it.

3. Load your mat into the machine and send it to cut.

4. To avoid curling, roll your mat away from your project (rather than lifting the project off the mat).

5. Weed your design. A Cricut BrightPad will help this go smoother, reducing eye strain.

The main layer of the Must Make Stuff shirt is quite complex. Go slowly to make sure you don’t lose any pieces.

For the infusible ink design: Bend your paper backward at the cuts to make weeding easier. Don’t worry if you’re only peeling off the ink layer and some paper remains. As long as the ink layer is gone, it’ll transfer correctly.

Using the Easypress 3 to apply your design

1. Download the Cricut Heat app on your phone. It’ll send settings to your EasyPress 3 or let you know which settings to apply on your EasyPress 2. Choose the correct base and transfer material to know which settings to use. Follow along as it guides you for how to press.

2. To make a layered shirt, start with the bottom layer. Press it for half the recommended time. Allow it to cool and carefully peel off the backing. It won’t be fully pressed, so do this step slowly.

3. Place on your top layer where it belongs. I recommend taping it in place using heat-resistant tape. This way it won’t shift and it’ll stay where it belongs. Place the backing from your first layer back over your whole design.

4. Press your shirt for the full pressing time (30 seconds for my shirt). Press the back as the app guides you to do.

5. When cool, remove the backing. Your layered shirt is complete!

6. For the Infusible Ink shirt, place your shirt on your EasyPress mat. Place a sheet of cardstock on the inside.

7. Use a lint roller to clean your shirt of any dirt or dust that may interfere with the transfer.

8. Set your EasyPress 3 using the app. Place butcher paper on your shirt – it should be larger than your EasyPress surface. Make sure to preheat your shirt as instructed – it helps to make sure that the shirt is smooth and moisture-free so that it’ll readily accept the Infusible Ink transfer.

9. Allow your shirt to cool. Tape your design in place. Use plenty of tape and make it really solid so that it doesn’t shift. If it moves while transferring, you’ll get “ghosting” – unclear edges.

10. Cover it with butcher paper. Transfer your design according to app instructions.

When you’re done, and the design has cooled, peel to reveal your gorgeous design!

You’re probably wondering: can my eight year old really use a sewing machine safely?

The Stitch N’ Style Fashion Studio features a very kid-friendly machine, based on a few factors:

• Size – the compact size is not only easy to keep with their craft supplies, it’s also easier for small hands to deal with.

How to create more machine sewing projects for kids to use with the Stitch N’ Style Fashion Studio

Once you’ve created the kit projects, you definitely shouldn’t stop! Here are some tips to encourage kids to keep on creating their own individual style:

• Start simple: The simplest projects are the best to learn on! Kids build these skills with repetition. It’s okay if they sew a hundred straight lines before trying a curve. The more success they have, the more they will love to do it, and the more they’ll be willing to tolerate frustration if things don’t work once they explore more complex projects.
• Be generous with seams: When adults teach kids real life skills it’s important to take a break from how we do things and adapt it to them. The Stitch N’ Style Fashion Studio works best with half inch seam allowance, which are easier for the kids to handle. I first designed with quarter inch allowances since that’s what I’m used to. If using classic patterns, cut it a bit wider on the seams.
• Work with their interests: If your kid loves hairdos, start with the scrunchie. Unicorn obsessed? Try the Uni-Kitty plushie.

3 Machine Sewing Projects for Kids

Materials needed for all projects

• Cool Maker Stitch N’ Style Fashion Studio
• Scissors
• Optional: keychain for the stuffy
• Small bowl of water for decorating hydroprints

What you need to make the pencil case

• The template – print it below
• Fabric: I used quilting cotton. I recommend a fabric that is on the thinner end, with no stretch and a bit of drape (avoid fabrics that are too stiff or thick.)
• Tailor’s chalk or washable fabric marker
• Hook and loop closures

Before every project

1. Switch your machine on using the switch in the back.

2. Make sure your thread is pulled out at least 2.5 inches (6 cm) before you start.

3. Make sure your button is in the pause position until you’re ready to start.

To make the glasses case

1. Cut out the sunglasses fabric.

2. Fold down the side seam and hold with clips.

3. Sew that first side. Simply place it right before the foot, and up against the guide. Make sure the “Stitch ‘N Style” logo is facing you during sewing. Slide the pause switch into the play position. It’ll give a quick, low beep before it begins and automatically starts sewing. It will also stop on its own when it reaches the end.

4. Push the lever to expose the thread and lock your last stitch. Cut the thread.

5. Lift up the foot to remove your fabric.

You’ve successfully sewed your first side! Make sure to pull out the thread 2.5 inches before sewing the next!

6. Fold your fabric in half so that the pretty patterned sides face each other. Sew along the markings.

7. Turn it right-side-out. You can use a pencil to push in the corners if you’d like. You’ve completed your glasses case and are ready to start decorating it if you’d like!

8. To add hydro prints:

Dampen your fabric using the included sponge.

Peel off the one you’d like to use.

Place the hydro print as if it’s a sticker and  use the stamper to stamp on top of it too.

Let it dry and your DIY glasses (or sunglasses) case is ready to use!

To make the plushie

1. Cut out both sides. This one is a bit different, as you’re using the print on the back of the fabric.

2. Place the right, patterned  sides together, and sew around the edge, leaving a small opening. Keep in mind that you probably will find it more challenging to sew on a curve like this and it’s okay if you need to retry and fix your stitch a few times before you get the hang of it!

3. Use the opening to flip it right-side-out.

4. Stuff it with fabric scraps!

5. Sew the opening closed. Push the lever to expose the thread and lock your last stitch. Cut the thread. Lift up the foot and remove. 

6. You can enjoy your plushie as-is or sew a small tab on top for a keychain! I used another scrap to do this.

Slide a keychain through the hole. Your plushie is ready to keep or gift!

To make the pencil case

1. Print and cut out your template. Make sure to print it “actual size” and not “fit to page.” Tape it to your fabric on the wrong side to hold it in place while you trace.

2. Trace it with a washable fabric marker or chalk.

3. Fold up the dashed lines and mark those with dashed lines on your fabric so that you can know where to fold

4. Cut it out around the outer edge.

5. Fold down on the dashed lines, clip, and sew in place. Start with the small flap.

6. Next, sew down the three seams of what will be the closure of your pencil case.

7. Fold it in half so that the two crayon shapes line up, right sides facing each other. Sew on the straight side, and then the three sides of the point.

When sewing the top angled side, make sure to hit “pause” to stop sewing when you reach the end of the side, or it’ll continue sewing onto the cover flap.

8. Flip your project right-side-out. Use a pencil to poke out the corners.

9. Add hook and loop closures. Place both sides on the flap, and then fold it over and press to determine where the other side goes.

You’re done creating a DIY pencil case! Fill it with pencils, crayons, markers, or whatever you’d like!

The wall art was made using a Cricut Access design for a monochromatic rainbow. I treated it more as a simple abstract pattern.

It was made using shimmer vinyl for a subtle princess effect, without overdoing it. The overall look is modern and clean.

The solid color vinyl was placed on the back and the line art on the front. This adds subtle depth. You can use any simple image or line art with this tutorial. It’s also a fabulous way to showcase your favorite mandala animals!

What exactly is the Cricut BrightPad?

Cricut makes a line of cutting machines that can be used by anyone, from novice to pro. But they also create loads of products to support cutting machine crafting, including the BrightPad.

The Cricut BrightPad is a lightpad created by Cricut to help make things easier when crafting.

This slim light box uses LED lights on a large, flat surface to back light projects. Placing a project on it causes all the details on it to come to life, helping to reduce eye strain for anything that requires detailed work.

It doesn’t take up much space in your craft room, and is really a convenient tool in your crafting arsenal, beyond Cricut crafting.

What is Cricut Bright Pad Used For?

The BrightPad was designed to make weeding Cricut projects easier.

Weeding refers to removing the “wrong” parts or outline of your vinyl on various projects. Some materials (such as glitter and shimmer textures) and colors (such as white or yellow) can be harder to weed because the cut marks are less visible.

The BrightPad is a fabulous tool that makes things so much easier by back lighting your project. As the light shines through your project, it shines brighter through the areas where the cuts are, outlining them.

Projects that are more complex – such as text-heavy projects like this canvas sign, mandala cuts, or very repetitive cuts like this rainbow – are very prone to mistakes.

The Cricut BrightPad makes everything super clear so that you can make fewer mistakes. Usually pieces get lost when they’re pulled off the backing accidentally because you didn’t notice them. With the BrightPad you’ll notice them…

What else can a Cricut BrightPad make easier?

Did I mention that the BrightPad goes much further than weeding?

First of all, let’s talk Cricut crafts! Infusible Ink is one of my favorite materials as it embeds (and basically dyes) the design into the fabric. Using markers rather than sheets gives you more options color-wise. But because your design always needs to be mirrored, it’s hard to freehand.

With the BrightPad, you can easily trace a design in mirror image.

I took some old lettering doodles with the word “create” in pretty script. I flipped it over and placed another paper on top. Now, I can trace the word Create in mirror image to transfer to a pencil case.

The Cricut BrightPad can also be used for:

• Tracing art for any purpose, beyond Infusible Ink.
• Paper Piercing – such as making lanterns
• Quilt blocks or sewing templates

• Building intricate models
• Jewelry making, such as beading fine projects
• Calligraphy – tracing templates, even directly onto cardstock

It’s fabulous for any complex, detailed art or craft!

What’s the Difference Between the BrightPad and BrightPad Go?

As you may have noticed, Cricut has two models of the BrightPad: the BrightPad and the BrightPad Go.

The main difference is that while the standard model needs to be plugged in for use, the BrightPad Go is rechargeable, so that you can take it to your living room couch and weed, trace, or bead while watching TV. Or toss it in a tote bag and work on your projects in the waiting room or carpool line…

A few more differences between the two models:

• Brightness options: the BrightPad has three while the BrightPad Go has 5
• Brightness level: the BrightPad goes to 3800 lux while the BrightPad Go goes up to 4200
• Thickness: the BrightPad Go is slightly thicker

Is Cricut BrightPad worth it?

Using a BrightPad for weeding my projects has saved me from the frustration of both wasted material and time, making it a fabulous tool to have in my craft room.

Since I use it beyond Cricut crafting, it’s become as necessary as my glue gun! It’s an incredible tool for going over artwork to “clean it up” and tracing sketches. I love it for tracing hair bow templates. But most of all, it’s made a world of a difference in weeding more complex projects and materials like shimmer vinyl. It’s really expanded what I do with my Cricut.

How to make wall art with Cricut Bright Pad

Ready for the tutorial? This bright and colorful wall art was made using permanent Smart Vinyl in solid colors and shimmer texture. Solid colored vinyl is the same color on both sides, so placing it on the back of a glass frame insert makes for a pop of color in the background.

What you need

• Cricut Explore or Maker 3 with a fine point blade
• Smart Vinyl in bright solids
• Smart Vinyl Shimmer in silver
• Recommended: Cricut roll holder
• Cricut BrightPad or BrightPad Go
• Weeding tool
• Spray bottle with the following solution: 1 cup water, 1/2 oz alcohol, and a few drops of dish soap
• XL Scraper
• StrongGrip Transfer tape (comes with Smart Vinyl Shimmer)
• Scissors
• A picture frame with a glass insert – I used a black 8×10 frame

Note: if you have an older model machine, you can still make this! Just use a green StandardGrip mat to cut your materials – Smart or otherwise. Use a brayer to make sure it’s adhered well to the mat.

Project setup in design space

Grab my project here, or set it up yourself as follows:

1. Start a new project. Add a square shape to your canvas.

2. Make sure that the proportions are unlocked and make the rectangle the size of your frame’s glass. Change the color to be the same as your background vinyl.

3. Choose “images” and find one that you love!

4. Add it to your canvas. Make sure proportions are locked and resize to make sense for your background. Change the color to your material color.

Putting it together

1. Send your project to your Cricut to cut!

Smart Vinyl doesn’t need a mat, but I do recommend the roll holder to hold your material in place and trim it to size.

2. Cut out each rainbow roughly around the edge to make weeding easier. Place it on your BrightPad, set your desired brightness, and start weeding!

3. I found it easiest to start with the center and pull down every other strip. See how the light shines through and how clear the outline is?

4. Carefully remove the glass from a picture frame. Be careful as edges can be sharp.

5. Spray your solution on the back of the glass. Don’t spray too much! 2-3 sprays to cover the surface did the job for me.

6. Take your background color and pull back the first inch of backing. Line up the edge with the edge of your glass.

7. Pull back the backing the rest of the way. Your background should glide around somewhat easily due to the solution. Use a squeegie or XL Scraper to remove any air bubbles and to squeeze out the excess liquid.

Once enough liquid has evaporated (the alcohol in the solution expedites this) so that the backing doesn’t glide around easily anymore, you can flip it over and proceed to apply your rainbow.

8. Cut a piece of StrongGrip Transfer Tape a little larger than your design. Peel off the backing and use the scraper to apply it to your rainbow. Scrape well to adhere on the front and back.

9. Gently peel off the transfer tape. It should have picked up your design with relative ease. Line the bottom of the rainbow with the edge of the frame where you want it.

10. Use the scraper to apply it to the design, smoothing it out as you go along to avoid air bubbles.

11. When you’re happy with the placement, scrape really well, especially around the edges, to secure your design. Peel back the transfer tape. Make sure you’re peeling it back against the surface of the glass, and not lifting it up, to ensure your design sticks well.

12. Allow your backing to dry completely. Place the glass back into the frame, and replace the backing too.

Craft your own seashell pendants using a super durable clay alternative! Imprint necklaces are both elegant and fun, and are a great beginner InstaMorph craft. This post is sponsored by InstaMorph.

Imprint seashell pendants are a classier take on some of my favorite jewelry – seashell necklaces! And they are so strong, thanks to InstaMorph – a moldable plastic that is heat activated.

Instead of molding clay around seashells, which I’ve done in the past as a fun kids’ craft, I took it to the next level. I made seashell pendants that instead use smaller shells to imprint, lined it with metallic paint, and turned it into a much classier and more sophisticated piece of jewelry.

You can totally get creative with seashell pendants!

You can keep it simple.

Or, you can add cool details such as pearls or micro beads!

Metallic detail makes these just a touch classier. If you want them to be even more sophisticated, you can paint it exclusively in metallics. However, I do recommend contrasting the color of the imprint with the border – it looks so good! You can use two-tone metallics – either mixed metal, or a darker and lighter shade of the same.

Don’t limit yourself just to seashells! I found a cool vintage button in my craft room that had an ugly color but a cool design. It fits right in and has an impression I couldn’t have crafted myself.

What can you make with InstaMorph?

InstaMorph comes in the form of plastic pellets that are heat activated. Just place them in hot water and they turn into a moldable material!

This is a great product for those of us who want something with a stronger final result than clay but that’s easier to work with than resin. It’s kid-friendly as it’s not hot when it comes out of the water (just make sure a grown-up supervises and deals with the hot water or any of the heating process, and ensure that temperatures remain at a safe level).

InstaMorph can be used in so many ways! Here are some things besides seashell pendants that I tried to make, as well as some things I’d like to try:

• Make a ring or jewelry drop dish! I painted mine like a geode.

• Craft a lightweight, non-jangly bangle. You’ll want hot water available to tweak your design as you go along.
• Use the same tutorial to make drawer pulls by adding hardware instead of imprinting shells.
• Make molds! This exact tutorial can be used as a mold for other crafts – just keep in mind that you can’t use it for heat (it’ll soften) and it hasn’t been graded as food safe yet.

Basically, anything that you’d like to have in a durable opaque plastic can be formed from InstaMorph. And if you’re not quite happy with the initial results, just drop it back into the package and save it for the next craft.

Tips for working with InstaMorph

Just like with any new craft material that you’re trying, expect there to be a learning curve with InstaMorph. For true beginners, I recommend using molds to get things as you’d like them on the first try. Stiff molds (rather than flexible silicone) seem to work better. Of course, it’s easy to experiment with InstaMorph since you can reuse it by reheating it!

Use tongs or gloves to remove the InstaMorph from the water, because it’s HOT. That is, the water, not the InstaMorph. It should not be too hot to handle, as long as you don’t overheat it. I personally used gloves while creating this tutorial because that’s what I had handy, but at a later stage I just pulled it out with the back of a paintbrush.

You can keep the water on the heat surface to make more advanced designs. This way you can easily reheat it as needed to remold, smooth, and even add texture to your craft.

InstaMorph turns clear when moldable. It goes back to its opaque color when cured. So, just peeking at your pellets will show you if it’s ready to work with.

Finally, you’ll want to use a smooth-surface-friendly paint to complete your craft. I used acrylic paints and sealed it with a super gloss finish. You can also use a plastic primer, plastic-friendly spray paint, or seal it with resin for a chip-free finish.

Supplies for making seashell pendants

• InstaMorph – One package can make about ten seashell pendants!
• A hot cup or mug with hot water
• Tongs, heat-proof gloves, or something else to handle your InstaMorph with
• Small shells – found or purchased. Or, try finding other items that’ll leave nice imprints – if you don’t like the result you can reheat and try again!
• Small paint palette or other stiff mold
• Metallic multi surface acrylic paint
• Contrasting multi surface acrylic paint
• Paintbrushes
• Super gloss sealer
• Jump ring
• Finished chain

How to make a seashell necklace

1. Follow the package instructions to heat your InstaMorph. Heat water to about 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Tip: if you use an insulated cup or keep the water hot, you’ll have it handy for reheating as needed.

2. Pour some InstaMorph in the water and wait a couple of minutes. You’ll see the pellets turn clear.

3. Take it out of the water (don’t touch the water – use heat-proof gloves or tongs to take it out). Your InstaMorph is now moldable!

4. Break off a piece and press it into the palette.

5. Press in your shell.

6. Your InstaMorph will be starting to lose its transparency at this stage. Take it out and carefully press in a nail, pushpin, or even a paint brush handle to make your hole. Reheat it if you want to smooth the top or fix it at all. I like when my crafts take on an organic texture, so I didn’t fuss much on most of my seashell pendants.

7. When your pendant turns white, paint the imprint with metallic paint.

8. Paint the surrounding area a contrasting color. Paint thin layers, allowing each to dry in between. Refine your edges as you paint each layer.

9. Don’t forget to flip it over and paint the back!

10. When you’re done painting, add your sealer. At this point you can also add any embellishments you want.

11. Open a jump ring with a backward/forward motion and place it in the hole you created. You may need to recreate this hole to a degree by poking the implement you used back through.

12. Finally, add a chain and wear your seashell pendants with pride!

About the soap carving for kids activity

Believe it or not, even young kids can try soap carving! I would never have thought of this if not for the bonus activity cards included in our Atlas Crate (more on that in a bit).

Using kid-safe items, such as plastic knives, paper clips, and a pencil makes it easier for kids to create. And since Spring is in the air, I decided to share some ideas for floral designs.

These soaps were finished off with a thin wash of watercolor. The trick to painting carved soaps with watercolors is NOT to overwork it. Use a heavily watered down wash with a large brush and dab a thin wash. I overworked my tulip, trying to shade it in. Rather, let the color gather in the grooves, highlighting them. Restraint is a skill to teach withing this soap carving for kids activity.

Because the water will wet and activate the soap, you’ll find your brush getting a bit of soap on it. That’s fine as long as you don’t overwork it!

Place your finished floral soaps in a guest bath or use it for decorative purposes. It’ll wash off on the first use or two and the soap will wash off any paint that comes off when you use it, so it’ll still clean.

The Atlas Crate that we featured in this post was focused on Italy. I let Y, my right brained almost six year old go all in on this one.

It was wonderful for Y (almost six) to learn about the origin of his favorite food: pizza! We crafted the pizza oven together, as he doesn’t read enough to do it on his own. I guided him, while he did the assembly. Y is just below the recommended age for this crate. M, age eight, can assemble this on his own.

Thick cardboard and cardstock parts lock together, with foam stickers holding it in place. Assembly instructions are clean, with pieces locking easily, and guides printed on the template to ensure it’s done correctly.

Our final pizza oven is so fun to play with! The pizza goes up and down, and the included project information explains why pizza is tossed in the air. And the flame moves up and down to “flicker” as well. It’s all mechanical – no batteries are needed to produce this proud, smiling face!

We also learned about the calco (traced) art process used by Renaissance artists and then made our own. The kit came with quality watercolor paper cards, paint, a brush, carbon paper, templates to transfer and a stylus to use as a transfer tool. I helped Y with the transfer (older children can do it on their own) and he enjoyed painting it.

Easy Soap Carving for Kids Tutorial

Ready to learn how to carve your own soap – just like Renaissance sculptors but with an easier material to chisel away at than marble?!

What you need

• A bar of soft soap for each flower
• Things to carve with, including a pencil, paperclip, plastic kid-safe knife, and toothpick
• Watercolor paints and paintbrush – we used the leftovers from our Atlas Crate
• A paper and pencil to sketch your template and scissors to cut it out with
• Something to protect your surface with

How to carve soap flowers – or any image you choose!

1. Trace your soap on paper and draw your design within that shape.

2. Cut out your shape and groove the soap around the design with your pencil.

3. Using the knife, start shaving away the soap around your design to shape it.

4. Using the pencil, draw the inner lines of the design by copying your template.

5. Use the paperclip to carve deeper grooves, curve edges, and define your shape. Use the toothpick to add detail. Keep carving until you’re happy.

6. Add a little water to a cup, jar, or palette, and add some watercolor. Using a soft, large paintbrush, paint a thin wash over your soap. Don’t overwork it (and I wouldn’t recommend doing much shading) as you’ll see the soap getting mixed into your paint.

Allow the paint to gather in the grooves and define your details.

Today, I’m sharing with you so me fun spring designs to make as fuse bead keychains. I love how versatile spring crafting is: you can still enjoy these all year round!

I did have these in mind as a fun Easter basket filler, but with spring break coming, and summer following that, we all know the kids will need some good, wholesome entertainment. It can be so immersive to create fuse bead keychains. I couldn’t stop at one, and had to cut myself off at four so that I can actually write this post for you! Y (almost six) helped me create these but it’s best for ages seven and up.

About the smART Pixelator + how to design your own fuse bead keychains

The smART Pixelator may be the perfect crafting tool for the tween-teen stage, but there’s actually no age cap on it. I might even keep it for myself! Okay, I’ll share with the boys too… You can make anything with it: coasters, portraits, 3D designs, bracelets, and more!

The way it works is very simple. Once you select your design, the lights light up in the correct color based on your pattern.

There are two ways to load patterns

• Load the SD that comes with your Pixelator and use the easy buttons to find the design you’d like to make.
• Download the free app, and then upload and pixelate any image.

We’ll be using the second method to get more options for fuse bead keychains, however you can and should definitely explore the designs that come on the SD as well. It’s easier to see the finished project through the app (they’ll load once you connect the SD).

The SD allows you to use the smART Pixelator without an additional device – the app just means your possibilities are majorly expanded.

I created an additional bunny design, but you can make one using the SD as well. You’ll also find a large butterfly and flower on the SD, great for a spring trivet.

Want to make your own fuse bead keychains design?

Simply draw your image, take a photo, and pixelate it. Small designs need to be simple, and symmetrical designs are easier to pixelate. Keep in mind that the pixelated nature of fuse beads make for impressionist images, not realistic.

You can try this with monograms, simpler images such as hearts, and even Easter egg designs too!

What you need to make spring fuse bead keychains

• smART Pixelator and beads – get $5 off with code MOMSANDCRAFTERS!
• Iron (I like to keep a travel iron in my craft room)
• Ironing paper (included with your smART Pixelator)
• Keychains – I recommend using ball chains for fuse bead keychains as it allows you to make the hole for them deep in, allowing your final keychain to be very durable.

How to make fuse bead keychains with any pattern

You can absolutely also make this using the designs that come on the SD that comes with your Pixelator! I decided to share a few new designs for spring too and the instructions include how to upload it.

Upload and perfect your design in the smART Pixelator app

1. Download the images above to your device. You’ll need to unzip it. If you don’t have a way to unzip files on your phone, download it to your computer and send it to your phone or whichever device you’ll be using to pixelate. Download and open the free smART Pixelator app and click on the camera icon once you’ve connected to your Pixelator.

2. Next, click on the photo thumbnail in the bottom right corner. It’ll show the latest photo in your library there.

You should now be in your image library. Choose the image you’d like to pixelate.

3. This is the ladybug image that I sketched. You can see that it’s almost there but not quite. You’re now able to get in close and choose your colors.

You can pinch to zoom and get in quite close. Here’s the rose in your download. While I illustrated it red, I created in pink. Make this easier by changing the colors in the app- or just change it as you assemble.

Where it’s relevant, I recommend that you note how symmetrical your drawings are and then adjust your bead plans accordingly. When you’re satisfied, hit the heart on the top right to save your design, so that you can stop in middle and continue another time. Zoom all the way out to get a green check mark and send your template to your smART Pixelator.

4. Time to start assembling! Your smART Pixelator will showcase your design as colored lights and now it’s up to you to do the rest. Y wanted to work color by color, using the bead tool to place each one in the correct spot.

5. I found it easier to work row by row and use my hands, and occasionally using the tool to nudge things into the correct spot. Turn on the music and relax while you work through your design!

Don’t forget to leave one bead off for the keychain!! You want this to be deep enough into your design that it’ll have a strong border. I like for it to have at least two beads between the hole and the edge.

6. When your design is complete, you can remove the bead board and frame from the Pixelator.

7. Cover your design with an ironing paper and iron it. Once it starts melting, you’ll see it through the paper.

I like to iron it until it looks like solid pixels, with only a tiny dot in the middle left of the hole (or not). Flip it over, gently peel off the board, place another paper on top, and then iron the back too if you’d like.

8. When it’s completely done, thread your ball chain through the hole. You may need to stretch the hole a bit if the beads melted a lot. I did this by gently and carefully twisting the end of a pair of scissors in the hole to complete the circle.

A. does well with unstructured play most of the day but she needs spots of structured play too. An indicator that she’s ready to be entertained: tissue “snow” starts falling all over the living room. She’s exploring and that’s okay. But I prefer to have her explore my way.

Five minutes of interactive time spent on a simple activity or a new toy – played together the first time – keeps her stimulated for follow-up independent play. And, according to Wonder magazine, found in the Panda Crate, kids discover more playing themselves than being shown how to do things!

Self-directed play is a hallmark of early discoveries but babies at this age can use a little boost. Kind of like training wheels.

And if you’re a work-at-home-with-baby mother like me, you totally get the value of keeping your young toddler happily engaged! Super simple activities for a one year old at home can be a sanity saver.

Today, I’m sharing three fun baby activities for young toddlers. These are inspired by the contents and activities of KiwiCo’s Play With Me themed Panda Crate, geared toward ages 11-18 months. They use items that can be found around the house so that you can replicate them today, as you wait for your Panda Crate to arrive!

The interesting thing about baby milestones is that we tend to focus on the obvious ones, while there’s a whole range that we don’t even know exist. A is currently receiving physical therapy, and I didn’t even realize she never learned to cross mid-line!

What’s inside our Panda Crate + Age-Appropriate Play Skills to Encourage

Panda Crate’s toy cards explain the play value in each one, and share how to further it. I’ve included some of these points here.

The biggest hit in our Panda Crate was hands down the ball drop drawer. Push a lightweight ball through a felt-lined hole and then see where it went! It took A a few tries to figure out that its’ in the drawer. And she repeated after me “ball!” Score one for new words!

We explored even more words, such as in and out. And it teaches babies objective performance – that it’s there even if you don’t see it. It’s perfect for the “peekaboo” stage!

The ribbon cube is a plush cube featuring ribbons that can be pulled back and forth. They have sensory-friendly tabs at the end that A loves to put in her mouth.

Some of the valuable skills learned include bilateral coordination, colors (name them as you play together), and cause and effect. Take turns pulling/pushing to teach about turn taking too!

The bead board and bar board is a two-in-one. You can use it with only beads or bars or combine the two.

The bars help build spatial awareness and both help build coordination. I’m starting A out with the beads and we’ll pull out the bars eventually. I love how this is a “grow into me” toy! It’s a big skill to learn how to place them on properly. Color matching will come at a later date.

It’s worthwhile to start with something even if they can’t explore all the concepts – it’ll grow on its own (kind of like your baby). But for now, look at those incredible stacking skills!!

Each Panda Create comes with a tailored-for-that-stage book, featuring the panda mascot Poppy. I love how easy that name is for babies! A calls all her Panda Crate toys “Poppy”.

There’s also the Wonder magazine which is a quick, easy, and to the point read, designed to make navigating this stage more understandable. The one in our crate is all about solo play, how to ease into it, as well ideas to get them started. It even has a song to sing together!

3 activities for a one year old at home

Each Panda Crate comes with additional activities to try. So far, we gave one a go, and then I came up with two more inspired activities for a one year old at home.

These play ideas are so valuable. They also train me, the parent, the direction to be thinking in when trying to come up with your own activities for a one year old at home, helping me maximize the play.

You can take these on the go too, if you need a distraction while eating out!

Note: all of these activities should only be done with close supervision. Your child can still enjoy independent play with you right there!

Discovery bottles that are meant to be opened

We recreated the “treasure jars” activity card with a puffed snack, crumpled paper, and the beads that came in our box. We “hid” in plain sight different treasures in plastic jars.

To do this, you’ll need the following:

1. Plastic jars We used food storage jars, but cleaned out pasta sauce jars, spice jars, or anything plastic with a screw top works.
2. Snacks, small toys, or anything that will fascinate your baby and fit in the jar.

Simply place something you know your little one will enjoy in the jars and place the lid on – but keep it loose. Allow your child to explore for that treasure! Unless you’re doing this in a high chair, I recommend sticking to one cracker, as the card advises.

Ribbon Tissues that don’t shred

Remember that tissue box above? I decided to repurpose it. I removed the plastic around the opening and stuffed it with scrap ribbons. Leftovers from holiday gifts are perfect for this!

To do this, fill any box or container with a narrower opening with ribbons. You can include some shorter ones and some longer ones to change it up. Sanitizing wipes containers are great for this too.

Ribbons might not “snow” but if your box is full enough you get just enough of a challenge to satisfy baby. And they are MUCH easier to clean up.

Surprise Peekaboo Sensory Board

Babies tend to break lift the flap books, but love the discovering aspect of it. So why not make your own that’s meant to be broken?

I repurposed our Panda Crate box to make ours. To make your own, you’ll need:

• Your Panda Crate box – or any cardboard
• One inch scraps of ribbon
• A craft or utility knife
• Hot glue gun
• Scissors
• Different textured items and shapes. You can search for these around the house, among your craft supplies, etc

To make this:

1. Cut off the top and bottom of the box and round off the edges.
2. Cut nine flaps in the bottom portion of the box using a utility knife. Round off the edges a bit.
3. Hot glue small bits of ribbon to the flaps to make them easier to open.
4. Glue the bottom of the box to the top, leaving the flaps unglued. Note: if you want your flaps to fully close with a thicker item underneath, make sure you leave a little spacer between the two layers of box. You can accomplish this by placing a cardboard strip between the front and back around the perimeter.
5. Glue a cool texture, shape, or anything to explore under each flap.

Our peekaboo board features, from left to right starting from the top:

• Glitter cardstock
• A felt butterfly
• Corrugated cardboard – actually, a scrap of the box with the top layer peeled off.
• The middle row is all wood shapes, painted different colors.
• A coil of cozy yarn
• Two wiggle eyes
• A coil of rough twine

Can you guess which was A’s favorite? She tried snuggling with the cozy yarn!
