I have always loved making seashell jewelry, in fact, one of my first popular jewelry-making blog posts right here were these seashell necklaces! There is nothing like taking a keepsake and turning it into something you can always wear.

Today I’m sharing how to make a seashell bracelet with string – a simple knotted friendship bracelet, that you can adapt in different ways. It’s a fun idea for teens, tweens, and anyone who loves boho style jewelery – yes, adults included.

Tips for learning how to make a seashell bracelet with string

Making a string and seashell friendship bracelet is really simple and is a very flexible process. Here are some tips that will help you make it your own and really master it. We’ve made so many types of DIY seashell jewelry in the past, and this is definitely one of the more flexible options. You can find so many ideas for seashell crafts of all types too.

Supplies and alternatives

To make these bracelets, we used satin rattail cord and wooden beads.

Satin rattail – This cord comes in many different thicknesses, and any of them can work. Thinner ones will look much more delicate and classy. Thicker ones will make chunkier statement jewelry. You can use other cords but make sure it’ll melt nicely if using the technique I show (adults only – more on that in a bit).

Wooden beads – These large-hole beads add a little interest and contrast to our bracelet. You can skip them. You can use crystals. You can use mother-of-pearl beads to stay on theme. You can really use anything – but it should have a large enough hole to fit nicely over your doubled-up string.

Crafting Variations

In this tutorial, I show you how to make a seashell bracelet with string using a very specific knot.

You can really do this any way. You can even skip knotting a second string to keep it simple! The point of the tutorial is more to show you how to turn a double-drilled seashell into a bracelet by connecting string on either side – and you can stop there!

Or, try other knots. Attach the strings for younger kids and let them simply bead it…

You can even make this in much larger to turn it into a super cool choker necklace!

I used a sliding knot to finish mine off and finished one with separated strands of two beads on each side, and one of combined strands and one bead on each side.

Basic tips for first-time success

To really nail learning how to make a seashell bracelet with string, make sure you use the right string with the right beads. Doubled up string should slide through quite easily. Knots should generally speaking hold when pulled tight. Your string should also be a size match with your hole – or use a bead reamer if you need to make your holes bigger.

This specific method has strings that end off in middle of the bracelet. That means that you need to trim it close, and finish it off by melting the ends. Only an adult should do this, and only in a controlled environment! I usually test each string over the sink. I keep a fire extinguisher in my craft space. And if you’re concerned, you can glue your knots instead.

I don’t usually try a new knot on a bracelet that’s more detailed. If you’ve never made square knots before, you’re best off making a simple square knot bracelet first and then doing this. Just follow the same knot I share below, but simply around a center string to make a basic bracelet.

How to make a seashell bracelet with string: step by step tutorial

You’ll need

Shells with holes drilled on each end – learn how to make holes in shells
Satin cord
Good scissors – fabric scissors will help get you a cleaner cut
Wood beads – large enough holes to fit over the doubled over cord
Adults only in a controlled setting – lighter. Or use glue.
Optional: paracord jig or double-sided clipboard

Process

1. Measure two lengths of string, about 12 inches each, doubled over.

2. Take one string at the center/fold point. Pull it from back to front through one of the shell holes to form a small loop.

3. Pull the ends of the same string through the loop (back to front) and then pull it tight.

4. Repeat with the other string on the other side.

5. If you’re using a jig or clipboard, attach the started bracelet so that the shell is centered.

6. Cut another 2 pieces of string about 18 inches long doubled over. Tie one around one base bracelet string (the ones you already linked to the shell) right up against the shell.

7. Make a few square knots, making sure to alternate your starting strand. If you’re not sure how to do a square knot, I do teach it here.

8. Every 3 rounds of knot (one with each starting string) slide a bead up onto the center strands.

9. I did 3 rounds of 3 square knots, with two beads.

10. When you’re happy with the length of your knotted area, trim the knotting string to a few mm, making sure your final knot is very tight first.

11. ADULTS ONLY in a controlled environment (such as over the sink) take a lighter and carefully hold it next to the cut string until it starts to melt. Right away use the edge of the lighter and press it against the melted portion to “glue” it to itself. Do this one side at a time. Or use glue to seal your knots.
