If you’re a fan of coloring of any age, leaf coloring pages are a must-try. Leaves are one of those wonders of nature: they are so similar in basic structure, yet so different! Virtually any plant can be identified by simply snapping a photo of its leaves.

That’s why these leaf coloring pages were kept simple: focus on the simplified shape of each leaf and have fun coloring!

And yes, grown-ups and kids can both have fun learning about leaf shapes and coloring in leaves with these. Kids can color them in more simply or get creative, and adults can practice shading and highlighting, and blending various art supplies on these.

A peek at the whole bundle

Tips for coloring leaf coloring pages

What I used

I always like to share my best tips for coloring these when I can.

For these, I pulled out my Ohuhu alcohol markers. I pulled out sets of similar colors – and stepped a bit outside the expected bounds, going deeper, darker, yellower, and browner than the obvious.

I protected my surface using a sheet of plastic for backing. The markers I used were fine tip on one side and chisel on the other. I do find brush-tip alcohol markers easier to blend since they fade more naturally.

Alcohol markers are fabulous for layering and blending on projects like this one because they won’t soak the page and shrivel it – they just absorb right in.

Color theory in leaf coloring pages

When choosing your colors, don’t just stick with the obvious. Think of the variation in color in what you see, and step outside the box. On the red maple leaf, I added a splash of yellow that really made it pop more than the others.

The aspen would never be a flat yellow. It always has a brown tone to it.

Studying photos of leaves as you color your leaf coloring pages is a really helpful way to get a convincing effect.

More cool supplies for coloring leaf coloring pages

If you’re not up for using alcohol markers, or just aren’t in the mood for them, try this (and yes, you can follow the steps below roughly using these media too):

• Try this with chalk pastels instead
• Soft core colored pencils are a favorite! A good mid-range brand is Prismacolor Premiere.
• Trace the design onto a watercolor board using carbon paper and color it with watercolors.

You can also add highlights using a white gel pen, sparkle using a gold paint marker, or use your imagination to overlay it with doodles and mandalas!

How to color leaf coloring pages – step by step tutorial

I usually stick to basic tips and not an exact process for coloring pages, because you need to be the artist.

However, since this is a more nature-sourced and specific – “technical” – coloring page, I’ll follow a process – but do whatever YOU’D like!

1. Swatch each color you plan to use before you start, testing how they blend. For the maple leaf, start with a darker red. Fill in around the border, adding thicker blocks of color in some spaces.

Avoid making things too homogeneous.

2. Take a lighter and brighter shade of red and color over it, blending the colors together. I recommend coloring over your darker color, too, to get a better blend. Use light blending strokes as needed.

3. Keep going lighter and brighter. Don’t be afraid to go more orange and yellow. If you go too bright too fast, choose an in-between color to blend things better.

And remember, nature doesn’t have perfect blends either!

4. Keep going, overlapping and blending.

I often like to find a very light shade that I can use to go over the whole thing and set a specific “tone”.

5. For the aspen leaf, which I colored “yellow”, I started out with tans as my deeper color, working my way into golden tones and yellow. This one I left flat and less dynamic.

6. On the oak, which I colored green, I started out with deeper colors on the inside, working my way lighter. I did jump ahead a bit on this one, coloring the outline in the light shade first just because I wanted to block that in with neat strokes to allow me to then do more fast strokes on the inside.

I did then go over the whole leaf with the same process.

Have fun coloring your leaf coloring pages! And no, you don’t need to keep them realistic! You can color them in a rainbow spectrum, see how many shades of green you can discover, or just work with any fantastical color scheme!

Spring is halfway through, but the flowers will be continuing into the early weeks of fall – so why not continue celebrating with flowers? They’re pretty all year around, aren’t they?

I illustrated four beautiful flower mandalas for you to craft and create. The idea of these is to give you a color-then-craft experience that’s design with adult colorists in mind. To do that, I kept the craft simple.

The idea is to make a flat complex mandala “flower” and mount it on a stick. The mandalas are floral too, featuring petals, leaves, and more details. They are oversized (some more than others) so that they make a statement.

You can place one on each side of the stick – I recommend a wooden dowel – if you want it to be double sided. It doesn’t even have to be the same mandala (but the back of the other one will show!)

You can mount these flower mandalas on colored cardstock circles too, but you don’t need to. I chose not to.

Place a few in a vase – you’ll want something, such as vase filler, to hold the dowel in place. You can use these flower mandalas as centerpieces or just craft it with friends.

What you need to make your flowers

• The template, printed on cardstock
• Markers – I used Prismacolor Premier alcohol markers
• Scissors
• Paper tape and/or Tacky glue
• Wood dowels

How to turn them into flowers

1. Color in your flower mandalas. A little subtle shading goes a long way.

2. Cut them out.

3. Tape and/or glue a dowel to the back.

Favorite Supplies to color with

Coloring pages for adults aren’t all the same and I do share a bit of insight on my favorite coloring tools here. I figured I’d share a few of my favorites, in case you want to gift these pages along with coloring tools for your coloring enthusiast mom.

Some coloring pages have more detail than others and this one is highly detailed. There can be a few approaches but my favorite is simply to isolate a region and work on that. I don’t like to fill out every detail – I like to group elements. For this, I used Ooly brush markers.

The tip allows me to get more detail in but it’s a very broad, natural-feeling brush, which makes me feel very satisfied while coloring.

If you like to go all-in on the detail, I recommend Stabilo Point 88 fineliners. If you want something that’ll go with that but be less tedious, the Point 88’s lesser-known big sister, Pen 68 is a fabulous option for covering more ground.

I absolutely love Prismacolor Premier alcohol markers – the ones with the brush tips on one end and the fine point on the other. On pages like these Mother’s Day coloring pages for adults you’ll find that you can just let the inner doodles be ornamental while creating beautiful shaded designs. And if you’re more of a colored pencil person, you can do the same with those. Personally, I used Prismacolor Premier colored pencils but many professionals prefer Derwent Inktense.

And finally, if you like to go all in on the details, and love the satisfying touch of rich, textured color, gel pens will be spot on for you. While I love Sakura Gelly Roll pens – they are above and beyond anything else I’ve tried – you can definitely go with cheap off-brands too.

For starters, I chose to color it using Stabilo Pen 68 markers. They come in vivid spring shades, and the points are that perfect in-between size. You can fill in decently large areas without it taking forever, but it’s fine enough to get into small areas too.

If you’re more the type to fill large swaths of paper using the finest points, try Stabilo Point 88 Fineliners.

What you can make with Easter Adult Coloring Pages

While most people think of adult coloring pages as a solo craft, when you have a set like this that’s based on a simple template, you have the perfect tool for team crafting!

Whether you’re decorating the walls of a library or classroom, or family crafting and adorning your home, there’s so much you can do to take Easter adult coloring pages a few steps further. Here are some ideas:

• Allow each person to color a different egg. Then, hang them all on a wall.
• Print your eggs on cardstock instead of paper. Color them, cut them out and turn them into a garland.
• Or, back them onto colorful cardstock and make a gallery wall.
• You can even turn it into a 3D display! Simply cut a frame from cardstock with an egg-shaped opening (use one of the coloring pages as a template). Use foam dimensional adhesive stickers to attach it.
• You can even simply print these on pastel shades of cardstock to begin with and allow the patterns to shine without coloring them.
• On that note, if you love the look of foil, print these on cardstock in a laser printer, then run it through a thermal laminator with the correct kind of foil. You’ll get a beautiful, glamorous result!
• Do any of the above in smaller for a beautiful greeting card.
• Print them even smaller and turn them into a plastic-free egg hunt!

I’ve always felt like coloring is a fantastic self-help resource, especially when there are actual words involved.

As I color, I drill the messages into my brain, repeat the mantras, and think about the topics the pages talk about.

For a while, I wanted to whittle the concept of motivational coloring pages to single words. It’s just much more to the point.

But I didn’t want to go with the same old “faith, hope, love…”

A friend helped point me in the direction of these coloring pages.

Growth mindset coloring pages

The idea of a single word is that it says it all.

So how do you say what you really want to say with one word?

First, I narrowed down my message: Progress, not perfection

We strive to be perfect in our self-betterment, but really, it’s the growth mindset that’s important.

That’s why each of these pages contain the “growth” – more, rather than most – form of the word.

I want to be better. I don’t need to be the best.

As long as I’m working on it, I’m improving, I’m in good shape.

We’re ditching the perfectionism and aiming for progress.

Words featured on these motivational coloring pages

The list of words was surprisingly hard to pull together but here they are – with my thought process behind each one:

1. Bolder:

Taking the plunge, saying what I think, and being strong in my ideals is a life I want to live.

2. Braver:

Not being afraid to try new things, to step into uncomfortable situations, or to speak my mind.

3. Stronger:

Strength comes through willpower, through recovery, and often through hardship. I want to try to let the hard times allow me to grow and be a stronger person.

4. Calmer:

How I respond to anxiety, how I respond to my kids, how I respond when things upset me on social media… I want to remember to take those deep breaths..

5. Happier:

Happiness might be a state of mind, but it’s also a life of working on it. I hope to learn to be happier no matter whether life accommodates me or not.

6. Kinder:

Kindness is everything. One action at a time, one word at a time, let’s be kinder – it’ll solve so many problems!

7. Neater:

It might be challenging to keep things neat with kids home with life tossed upside down… but progress is everything.

8. Better:

Better at everything on this list – but one thing at a time. Aiming to choose the better path in everything we do. Just focusing on the better option.

9. Wiser:

We can learn and we can relearn and absorbing life’s lessons is what makes us wiser. My commitment is to learn from my experiences so that I am wiser.

10. Healthier:

While it can be hard to stick to the daily walk or the diet perfectly, sometimes just choosing the healthier choice in the moment can make all the difference.

How I illustrated these coloring pages

My motivational coloring pages are digitally drawn using a stylus on my laptop. That means that they are hand-drawn using digital media (and not digitally generated designs or outlined clipart.)

The reason I draw my artwork digitally is to allow me more flexibility in making corrections, creating my designs, and playing around with different options.

All the text was also hand lettered by me – not using fonts. Since I illustrated these growth mindset coloring pages digitally, I was able to add a pre-made grid to follow, and in some cases, I was able to outline my lettering – by hand, using a calligraphic brush – for you to color.

In this way, I can maintain the flexibility of digital art with the organic nature of physical art.

I also don’t need to worry about erasing my pencil well enough (I just disable the pencil sketch layer). I skip “vectorizing” my image which sharpens it but often ruins the detail. When I scan a hand-drawn image it needs that to sharpen it, but drawing digitally means the lines are already quite sharp.

I also have the benefit of digital rulers, use of some basic shapes (such as the main squares on the “bolder” page), and occasionally duplicating or mirroring a design that is a bit repetitive (such as the top and bottom on the “neater” page.)

How I colored the “kinder” page

I pulled out my Prismacolor Premier alcohol markers to try on my favorite page – the “kinder” page – which give me the power to blend in rich, bright colors.

I spent a while coloring it.

And then spilled my last ounce of coffee on it…

I think I did a pretty good save – the colors didn’t bleed much. And Photoshop allows me to to share with you something close to what it looks like in real life. My reaction was “calmer” than it could have been since I’m trying to be a “happier” person…

I did cry a little, though.

You can see a quick video on how I blended the sunflowers here (along with a preview of all the pages):

First, I started with a yellow-orange to create the depth of the petal.

I blended it out and filled in the rest of the petals with a yellow marker.

The seeds are different shades of brown in rich tones. The word “kinder” is filled in with a deep blue marker.

I also outlined the letters and added some detail using a white Sakura gelly roll pen.

I love pattern coloring pages because you can actually get quite creative with them.

First of all, you can use them in crafts after you color them. It’s almost like a “design your own paper”.

Second, on the ones that are complete patterns (and not the same icon repeating in a brick shape), you can get creative with the areas where the pattern meets.

In case you’re not sure what I’m talking about, I colored one square of the repeating pattern to show you. But I also colored one corner from the other 3 squares where the pattern meets.

Can you tell what the baseline square I used to make this pattern is? It’s the area where the four original squares of pattern meet that forms all sorts of cool designs.

How I made this mini adult coloring book:

To make pattern coloring pages, I first illustrated the “base” pattern. I then imported it to Photoshop, where I created a repeating pattern.

So this pattern is NOT computer generated. It’s hand-drawn. And then the actual repetition was done digitally for the perfect blend of accuracy and artistry.

How I colored these adult coloring pages:

To color the little snippet that I did to demonstrate, I grouped my Stabilo Pen 68 markers into 3 color families that I chose to use – purples, greens, and blues.

One teal color floated between the blues and the greens.

I played on the relationship between the sides of the squares.

About Postcards – the adult coloring book that this page comes from:

A while ago, I decided to create a new coloring book for adults called Postcards. The idea was to include not only nature scenes, but anything that can land on a postcard. These are coloring pages inspired by places and scenes, with most of the pages being landscape-focused, and a few “just for fun”.

The pages are full-sized coloring pages and are repeated in quarter-page size in the back so you can create them as actual postcards as well.

Just like most of my adult coloring pages, the point of most of these pages was to avoid the over-complexity that some adult coloring pages feature and focus instead on mature themes and designs, with some fun and quirky patterns thrown in. Some are simpler lines with patterns (like this one), some feature more realistic/drawing style line drawings (rather than patterns), and a few are more complex and challenging.

How I colored this autumn themed adult coloring page:

As always, I like to share how I colored a specific page… so here ya go!

This one was colored with STABILO Point 88 markers. They are my most relaxing option. I typically pick out my color families and color away!

I usually alternate color families, using the different shades throughout each pattern. With fall leaves, it’ll look gorgeous even if you just stick to reds and oranges, but you can also subdivide it into yellow-greens, yellow-oranges, and red-oranges, as well as orange-browns for more variation.

To color these free printable mandala coloring pages, I used mostly Stabilo Point 88 pens, with Pen 68 in black to fill in some background.

I first chose some color families and colored one section at a time, using different shades from the same family. No, I did not finish coloring it yet… it’s sitting on my dining room table, waiting to be finished!

If/when I do, I’ll definitely share it on Instagram.

I hand-illustrated the free printable mandala coloring pages using my Surface Pro.

What does that mean and why do I “cheat” and use digital means to illustrate my coloring pages?

I used to do everything entirely by hand. To tell you that the process took longer is an understatement. Even more so, the results were inconsistent and sometimes I spent hours just trying to keep the quality while sharpening the scanned artwork.

When I hand-illustrate onto my Surface, it means that I’m not using a computer-generated image. It’s the same intricate doodles you’re used to. Only, features such as line correction and the fact that I don’t need to rely on a scanner that pixelates it, mean that you’re getting a better, higher quality, more consistent image.

And even more so… that’s how I was able to offer four different designs in this free printable mandala coloring pages bundle! Because of the time-saving features included in the app I used, as well as the ability to create an image that’s good-to-go, I was able to create four pages in less time than it would take me to do one, while improving the quality!

As a “boy mom” I’ve been asked multiple times why so much of my blog seems to be geared toward tween and teen girls.

The truth is, I’m not coming as a mom. I’m coming as the “big sister” who was in those shoes not that long ago. It’s hard to believe I’m 20 years past ten but it feels like just yesterday.

The truth is, that this blog is primarily about creating, and for teenage me, creating was survival. I won’t go too deeply into it, but the outlet that crafting brought for me was indispensable and integral to my development into a fully functioning adult, who contributes to society.

The tween years are so complicated, and while I’m sure it’s the same for boys, I know what it’s like for girls.

I know that a girl needs to be told she’s beautiful, a beauty that comes from within. I know she needs to be taught that she has choices in life, that she can take life by the reins, do the right thing, and be in control of her future as well as her decisions.

I know what it’s like to endure subtle bullying – and  unsubtle taunting. I know how it is to wonder about the body you’re growing up in, to feel awkward, to wonder how beautiful I really am, to wonder what I can accomplish, what my future holds.

Crafting and creating was always that outlet that handed me something beautiful to hang onto. It was something that I can do and an actual result of my efforts, standing there before me. Even more so, it kept me busy, and, well, out of trouble…

These coloring pages for girls 10 and up are great for empowering the teen and tween set – and really for any age group. They have more mature designs than kid coloring pages and are include great statements to empower girls.

To color this, I recommend Stabilo Point 88 or Pen 68 markers (<— affiliate links). The Point 88 are the super thin points that are perfect for tiny spaces (fineliners) and the Pen 68 are just very small tip markers. They have rich colors, and are “grown up” enough to please your tween or teen.
