When I picked up a huge pack of pop tabs to make a soda pop tab bracelet tutorial, I knew I had to continue with more fun, colorful crafts. I ended up making these butterfly keychains using chenille stems and pony beads.

You’ll see lots of creators make soda tab butterfly keychains that look more “real.” My goal was to adapt that craft, and turn it into something more kid-friendly.

While you can create these with wire and glass beads, chenille stems and pony beads are easier to manipulate and make something much more colorful and fun.

Why we love soda tab butterfly keychains

Some craft projects require a pile of supplies and an hour of patience. This one doesn’t. You need a few basic materials – some of which you probably already have – and about 15-20 minutes. Want to craft more? Just make more of them!

The supplies are easy-to-find and cheap and you’ll love making this on repeat.

There are so many ways you can use soda tab butterflies. Clip one to a backpack zipper. Add beaded strands to make bag charms. Attach them to a key strap. Make a batch as party favors. Set them near the checkout table at a craft market. Tie one onto a wrapped present instead of a paper tag.

This version of DIY soda tab butterfly keychains is so playful and full of texture. It embraces the unconventional craft material and makes the most of it.

The chenille stem adds some plush that make these so much fun. The pony beads add color and character.

And I even used colorful ball chains to finish these off just to up the playful factor – because butterflies should be playful.

Design Variations and Styling Ideas

The materials we used

Any time anyone looks at my soda tab crafts, they ask “wait – you actually bought soda tabs?” My answer is yes. I didn’t have patience to collect so I bought. You can of course upcycle soda tabs. You’ll want to make sure there are no sharp edges, but it works.

You can even paint them with nail polish if you want the solid color look of mine. Just paint them before crafting.

And the ball chains can definitely be replaced with classic keychains, carabiner clips, or whatever floats your boat. I used colorful ball chains because I felt like it!

Chenille stems in a as standard size were used here – something you can swap out with aluminum wire (that is, thick easy to bend wire). Or use jewelry wire for a more mature look.

And pony beads can be swapped for any bead that fits on your wire.

More variations

Once you get the hang of the basic shape, you can really get creative with it. Change the whole mood with color, bead count, or build style. I even show this by wrapping my chenille stems in two ways in the images.

Match your colors to keep things looking more polished. Think purple stem with purple beads, or blue on blue for a cleaner finish. You can even match your soda tab color and keychain color. Mixed beads feel brighter and more casual. Orange, teal, pink, and yellow are great butterfly color if you like a cheerful look.

You can also adjust the shape. Fewer beads keep the butterfly light. A few extra beads make the center stand out more. You can even play around with single-tab wings for smaller butterflies!

Seasonal colors are easy too if you want to craft this beyond summer. Try pastels for spring or red and pink for Valentine’s Day. You can really add lots of character with color.

The charm is in the repetition

Your first butterfly doesn’t need to be fancy. Keep the shape simple, get the wings balanced, and make the center wrap tight. That’s what gives the piece its clean finish and durability. These really are strong – the wings are rigid if you do it right.

After that, repetition does the work. The second one comes together faster. The third one usually looks even better. Once the base pattern feels natural, color is where you can switch up your craft

How to make DIY Soda Tab Butterfly Keychains

You’ll need

• Soda tabs
• Chenille stems
• Scissors
• Pony beads
• Keychains

Step by step instructions

1. Take four soda tabs. Arrange them as pictured: One horizontal with the round end pointing to the left and one vertical so that the squared end matches the squared end of the horizontal one – the round end facing down. Do the same to the right with the round side facing right.

2. Take a chenille stem. Wrap the end a few times around where the two tabs form a corner. Don’t worry yet about exact positioning.

3. Take the other end of the stem and wrap it around the other pair of tabs a couple of times in the same spot – the inner square corner. The two sets of tabs should be touching or almost touching. Trim any remaining chenille stem.

4. Reposition your tabs. Your chenille stem is sitting on the inner side through the top hole of the tabs.

5. Take a second chenille stem. Fold it in half. Thread a bead on one side and place it in that center fold. This will serve as a stopper bead.

6. Thread on three more pony beads.

7. Place the stem over your wings so that the beads sit just below the wrapped portion.

8. Wrap each side of the stem around that center twist – one on each side. Go over the top, around the back to the bottom, and bring it back over to the frong.

9. We now have the base for our antennae. Thread a pony bead on one side of your stem about an inch from the wings Fold over and twist it around the length of that inch.

10. You should have a bit of a tail leftover from that antennae. Push it down through those three center beads.

You’ll have a bit of chenille stem leftover that came through above that base blocker bead.

11. Wrap that little extra through the bottom hole of the vertical soda tab on the same side as the antennae and back around the center stem until your chenille stem is fully used. This secures the wing against the body.

12. Repeat steps 9-11 with the second antennae on the other half of your soda tab butterfly.

14. I used the extra scrap from my first wraps to wrap a bit between the vertical and horizontal soda tabs to secure it more. You don’t have to do this, and the style of wrapping I show in the video doesn’t need this but you can if you want. At this stage, play with your butterfly, reposition things as needed. and make sure you’re happy with how it looks.

15. Add a keychain! You can thread it through an antennae bead, a soda tab hook, or wherever you’d like!

And here’s a peek at the other style of wrapping. The main difference is that we just wrapped that first wrap around the top of the hole instead of the inside.

FAQs for making soda tab butterfly keychains

What size soda tabs work best for butterfly keychains?

Standard soda can tabs are usually the best option. They’re easy to find, easy to match, and they give the most consistent shape.

Can chenille stems hold the wings without glue?

Yes, most of the time they can. A tight center twist is usually enough. Glue is optional if you want extra hold on a charm that will get bumped around a lot.

Are these safe for kids to make?

They can be, with adult supervision. Clean tabs can still have sharp edges, so I recommend purchased tabs for younger kids. Tight twisting can be tricky for younger kids. Pre-check the tabs and help with the final twists if you’re working with little ones. Tweens should get the hang of this and be able to craft it independently.

Another concern is the chenille stems. They can be pokey, so proceed with caution!

Can the same pattern work with different bead colors?

Yes. The structure stays the same, and the color swap changes the look completely. That’s part of why this project is so easy to repeat without getting boring.

I had a very good reason to make a fresh DIY Tiara Headband this summer. I went to Sweet Suite, a toy show for content creators and influencers, and this year was their Sweet 16. That felt like a perfect excuse to go all in on sparkle.

I decided to make a crystal beaded tiara headband for myself, which I can then pass on to my daughter A. She is a full-on diva and never turns down a chance to dress up, so she was all over this project the second she saw the crystals.

Where you’ll want to wear your DIY tiara headband

This tiara isn’t just for pretend! It’s gorgeous and can be worn at an actual Sweet Sixteen party. Use it as a princess accessory for a costume or as a “birthday crown”.

This is elegant enough to craft for a flower girl to wear at a wedding. And while I wouldn’t quite put it on a bride, you can definitely adapt my tutorial to create a more mature design than the simple crown shape to make it for a bride.

Tips for making a DIY tiara headband

Wire gauge – striking the right balance

This DIY tiara headband uses wire as its structure, and to form the base. Wire comes in different sizes called gauge – the higher the gauge the thicker the wire.

I used two sizes.

• 18 gauge wire – I used this for the structure of the DIY tiara headband. It has good solid structure while still being quite pliable for beginners. It also fits nicely in the beads. Go too big and it’ll actually break the beads and be too hard to work with.
• 20 gauge wire – this still has good structure, but is a bit more pliable. I used this to wrap and add structure and strength to my tiara.

Choosing your beads

You can absolutely make a DIY tiara headband with just about any beads. I chose crystals because of their sparkle factor – and yes, there’s just something so compelling to it.

While you don’t need to stick to crystals, keep in mind hole size when choosing. While this would look fabulous with pearls, natural pearls are usually drilled much smaller. You can get special large-hole pearls for this, or use glass pearls (again, check the hole size.)

Really, this can be made with any glass bead, however, keep in mind that the gorgeous cut of the Swarovski crystal is what makes it so sparkly. I even used their AB coated ones that have an extra iridescent finish for bonus sparkle. FYI they are no longer available to the public, so if you don’t already have a stash, just pick up another brand crystal.

Getting the “magic” look

One cool trick I used here was to put it on a black headband. Since both A and I have very dark hair, this makes the headband disappear and it looks like the flat crown is perched right on our heads and magically staying in place!

The look is really easy to achieve on darker hair. For lighter hair tones, try for bronze or gold toned headbands – whatever blends best with the hair color.

How to make a DIY tiara headband – step by step process

What you’ll need

• 18 and 20 gauge copper wire
• Wire nippers
• Jewelry pliers – I used a mix of chain nose pliers and nylon jaw pliers
• A metal base headband close to the wearer’s hair color
• Crystal beads – I used a mix of 8mm and 6mm Swarovski crystal round beads. Note: Swarovski is no longer available to the public, so if you don’t already have a stash, get good quality crystals.

Tutorial

1. Choose the beads you plan to use. I stuck with soft beige, blush, and light blue (almost silvery) beads.

2. String them onto the 18 gauge wire as follows: 5 6-mm beads, 1 8-mm (peak) bead, 6 6-mm beads, 1 8-mm (peak) bead, 6 6-mm beads, 1 8-mm (peak) bead, 5 6-mm beads. Don’t cut the wire from the spool just yet.

3. Take the tip of the wire Wrap it around the headband a few times. It should be a few inches off center (you’ll be able to reposition it a bit).

4. Snip off any excess from the open end that you wrapped if needed.

5. We’re going to start shaping our crown! The first five 6-mm beads form the left side of the crown. Pull that down so that the bottom one sits against the headband, and the next form a line going up.

6. Bend your wire back a bit right above those beads.

7. Bring your 8 mm bead down. Curve the wire down around it.

8. You should now have your first point with a bead inside it. Squish it with pliers right under the 8mm bead if you need to refine the shape. Now bring three of your 6mm beads up to form a triangle.

9. Bend the wire up right below those three beads to form the valley between the spokes of the crown. The next three 6-mm beads will form the other half of that V.

10. Keep on going with the rest of the beads, allowing the 8mm beads to be the spokes of the crown, the second set of six split in half to form another V, and the last set of five forming the right side of the crown.

11. Trim your wire off the spool to a few inches from the end of the beads. Wind it around the headband a few times to secure it in place.

You now have a basic crown shape formed on your headband. You can tweak it a bit if you’d like at this point to refine it. We’re now going to stabilize the whole thing.

12. Take the 20 gauge wire and cut about a 6-inch segment. Center it on the wire below the larger spoke bead.

13. Wind it around a few times in that space below the bead (and over it a bit if you need to). Wind one side at a time. When you’re happy with it, trim it.

14. Do this for all three spokes. Position your crown where you like it on the headband and use your pliers to squash the wire wrap down in those spots to secure the crown.

15. We’re now going to form a base for our crown. String about 6 6-mm beads (depending on the final width of your crown – it should fill that space at the base.) I used 20 gauge wire here because it’s anyway sitting on the headband.

16. Hold that bit of wire up against the headband at the base of that crown. Wrap it a few times around the headband on each side, so that it sits flush on the headband. Repeat with the other side.

17. Take another piece of wire (20mm) and wrap it around the beads – between each bead – and around the headband at the ends.

18. Trim that wire. Your DIY tiara headband is complete and ready to wear!

Clay heishi beads have taken over the beaded friendship bracelet craze – and it’s legit. They are inexpensive, lightweight, and still look so classy! Their matte finish and often muted colors make for gorgeous, affordable, wearable, and easy jewelry.

But what about necklaces?

I decided to share with you three unique clay bead necklace ideas using heishi beads. These are the same beads that I used in my beaded wristlet keychain tutorial – so go ahead and make that too!

First of all, what exactly are heishi beads, and do you need them to make these clay bead necklace ideas?

Heishi refers to the flat, smooth disc beads that come in many different materials – but are very often made from clay. You can get them in gemstones and they’ll have more weight.

All of these ideas can be done with heishi beads of any material. In fact, I even mixed it up with metal on two of the styles!

However, only the bar necklace and the linked one can easily be done with clay beads of any sort. For the pendant style, you’ll need a larger jumpring (and the one I used was already quite large.

3 Clay Bead Necklace Ideas

When trying to figure out which necklaces are best to make with clay heishi beads, I start by thinking in terms of my typical necklace styles. But heishi beads are very different, and clay beads in particular are as well.

Heishi beads have a much narrower visible space than your typical bead.

Clay beads are also very lightweight and don’t settle or hang much.

With that in mind, I did play around a little bit and created three styles of clay bead necklace ideas that worked great:

A bar necklace – this sits in the center of a mostly-chain necklace, adding class to it. It sits quite nicely on the neck and looks great as a shorter or mid-length necklace.

On this one, I interspersed it with metal disc spacers as well to add a bit of glam.

Linked necklace – Here, I made small single-color links of clay beads and joined them with fancy jump rings – though you can try other links too!

You can try this one linked all the way around, or finish it off with a more comfortable chain like I did. I find that clay beads tend to get a bit scratchy on the neck, and this is a bit more comfortable.

This clay bead necklace idea can be worn shorter or longer, depending on how you like it. You can make it super long if you do clay links all around instead of the chain.

Tiny pendant – If you’re getting tired of stringing on all those tiny clay beads, but maybe want to match up a set, you can make these tiny pendants.

Since they’re so small, I recommend them on shorter or medium chains – but not chokers. You can definitely also turn these into earrings. The charm in the center is optional – but it adds a lot of, you know, charm.

How to make clay bead necklaces

Of course, I’m sharing very specifically how I did these, however, switch them up as needed to add your own style or improve on it as you’d like.

You’ll need

• Jewelry pliers: round nose, chain nose, flush cutters. I used bail making pliers, but regular round nose pliers will do.
• 20-gauge beading wire
• Clay heishi beads
• Metal heishi beads (disc spacers)
• Fancy jumprings – look for thick, large, sturdy ones (link and pendant style only)
• Regular jumprings
• Chain by the yard – paperclip/long link chain is so pretty!
• Spring ring clasp
• Pendant bail (pendant only)
• Optional charm (pendant only)

Clay bead necklace idea 1 – bar necklace

1. Cut a piece of wire a few inches long. It should be at least an inch longer than you want your beaded portion to be, but be generous – you can trim, you can’t add.

Make a small loop at the end.

2. String on your clay beads.

I did blocks of a few at a time in different colors and placed metal spacers in between.

3. When you’re satisfied, trim off the excess besides for about 8-10 mm, and form a loop at the end. Slightly curve your bar.

4. Figure out the total desired length of your necklace. Subtract an inch for the clasp. Subtract the width of your beaded bar. Cut two equal pieces of chain to make up your final size.

5. Open your loop slightly, slide on the chain, and close it. Repeat on the other side.

6. Add a clasp using a jump ring. On the other side, connect a few jump rings to make the clasp easier to close (and adjustable in length).

Clay bead necklace idea 2 – links

1. Make a loop at the end of your wire.

2. Trim it to about 2 inches. Add a few beads to make up the length you want your link to be.

3. Trim your wire, leaving about 8-10 m,m and then make another loop.

5. Create as many links as you’d like on your final necklace (depending on how much of it you want beaded vs. just chain).

6. On this one, I did the chain a bit differently. This method is best if you want to actually measure it on yourself for length. Attach a fancy jumpring to the end link of your spool of chain. Connect a clay bead link to that. Keep linking jumprings and links, alternating between the two. Finish with an open jump ring.

7. Place the entire thing around your neck to figure out how much chain to cut. Figure about an inch for the clasp and connector. Cut your chain and connect it to the last jumpring.

8. At the halfway point, split your chain.

9. Attach a clasp and connector (jumpring – or a few jumprings) to the two ends of the chain.

Clay bead necklace idea 3 – minimalist pendant

1. Open a large fancy jump ring.

2. String on some clay beads. I did three on either side of a single metal spacer. You can add more, but it should hang nicely.

3. String on a pendant bail as well. Close your jumpring.

4. I felt like it was missing something, so I hung a star charm directly from the bail as well.

Wear this one on any finished chain.

Let me guess: you were walking through the bead aisle in Michaels, a beautiful mistake, and you happened upon gorgeous beads that you figured you’d wear on your wrist every day.

But you want to string it up with a clasp, and you don’t want to lose it.

I’m happy to share with you how to make a beaded bracelet with a clasp – in a way that is so durable, I’ve worn it through dozens of showers and it’s still holding strong!

Yes, that is possible and I’m going to share with you my best techniques and tips for how to make a beaded bracelet with a clasp!

I do recommend that you read through the “intro” to this post – it’s not a nostalgic take (though I can go there if you want…) it’s really full of tips and advice, consider it the introductory paragraphs if you were taking a “course” on the matter.

Tips for How to Make a Beaded Bracelet with a Clasp

Choosing your beads

Back in that bead aisle in Michaels, your possibilities are endless. The best way to choose your beads is to figure what’ll be most comfortable. What do you want on your wrist all day?

If you’re going for round beads, choose something on the smaller end. I used 8mm gemstone beads and they are a great size for weak-hand wearing. They are a bit bulky for wearing on my writing hand.

They are a gorgeous matte finish gemstone in a color palette that operates as a neutral, and has just the right amount of color. And if you follow me on social media, or on YouTube, you’ll see it presenting in many of my videos.

If you do want to go larger, choose a flat bead. Faceted beads can be used as well, but they’re not my favorite for bracelets.

Types of strings and string ends

Your stringing materials make a huge difference, and if you’ll be making a lot of these to sell, I recommend experimenting with a few types of strings and finishes when learning how to make a beaded bracelet with clasp.

My favorite stringing material that I find absolutely strongest, especially when attaching a clasp is tigertail wire. It’s made of metal wires, that are twisted together in fiber-style, making it flexible like a string but strong as a wire.

There are so many different ways you can finish off the ends. I’ve played with a lot of styles. I do love using crimp beads and crimp covers, however, they do often come off.

For these, I chose instead to use crimp cord ends. I glued the wire in for added durability, and then also crimped it very well.

You can play with different methods and do what works best for you. I made these in sterling silver so that they can last me a while.

When making mostly beaded bracelets, it’s worth using better metal like sterling. It uses minimal metal – so it’s not crazy expensive – but it makes it much more durable. And if you’re selling it, your profit margin for your labor can be higher, since you can mark it up more.

Choosing your clasp

The cool thing about bracelets is that you can really make a statement with your clasp! On this one, I chose a sterling silver toggle clasp. Since the clasp tends to move around your wrist, it helps if it’s pretty!

The biggest disadvantage of the toggle is that it can open. Make sure to look for a toggle clasp that doesn’t have too narrow a bar. You should need to pull it all the way through and then let it loose to close it.

While there are so many techniques for how to make a beaded bracelet with a clasp- and I’ve shared my tips above, this tutorial will focus specifically on how I did it.

• A surface to work on that’ll stop your beads from rolling (a beading mat works, I pulled out a ceramic tile and flipped it upside down because I couldn’t find mine!)

Process

1. Stick the end of your wire into the bottle of glue so that the tip (about the length of your cord end) is covered.

2. Place the crimp end over the glue.

3. Squeeze it shut as tight as you can using the chain nose pliers.

4. Start beading! I let the gorgeous beads speak for themselves and interspersed them with the spacers.

5. A standard sized adult bracelet is about seven inches long. Keep in mind the size of the end crimps and clasp combined and bead as much as you need to.

6. Spread some glue in the area right past the last bead on the wire. Just a thin coating works, and it should be about the length of the crimp end.

7. Grip the wire in that spot tightly using the thinnest part of the pliers that’ll still hold it securely. Use the wire cutters to trim your wire.

8. Holding it carefully so that the wire doesn’t slide out, slide on your crimp end. I found that holding my bracelet by the beads, pushing back on the beads, and holding it on a table surface worked best.

9. Crimp it well.

10. Because I don’t solder, and I want my bracelet to be really secure, I like to make split rings using sterling wire, instead of jumprings. To do this, simply wrap your wire from the very tip around your wire looping pliers 2-3 times.

11. Snip it off.

12. Attach the split ring to one side of yoru bracelet. You may want to open it slightly with your pliers.

13. Attach your clasp to the other end.

14. Squish the split ring shut using your pliers.

15. Repeat with the other half of the clasp.

As someone who has been making jewelry for many years, I know that the age to start is… as soon as the kids won’t eat beads. There’s such pride that kids get in wearing the jewelry they made, and A’s hands and neck are always adorned (read: piled high) with her creations.

I recently ran a beading activity for preschoolers that was very successful and I wanted to share with you some of my best tips for teaching young kids how to bead. The kids were at different stages with their fine motor development and some needed serious guidance.

The process can be frustrating as it takes a lot of coordination to get the string through the bead, and then grasp the string, let go, and slide the bead down. But young kids, even those who don’t have the best fine motor skills, CAN learn with the right technique.

Skills learned by beading with preschoolers

Not only will they be so incredibly proud of their creations – and their success, but beading is just such a fabulous craft.

It exercises those fine motor skills at the pre-writing age, building the coordination needed for writing, and fine-tuning that pincer grasp.

I find that it really teaches kids patience and self-control in a way that is attainable for them because of the tangible reward each time they exercise that patience.

They can also practice basic math skills like counting and patterns. Of course, you can very easily incorporate sequencing and color practice in this beading activity for preschoolers too.

And finally, from a sensory standpoint, I personally find beading to be such a fun, tactile craft. Beads and strings come in so many different textures and finishes – think smooth plastic, rough wood, and soft silicone to name a few.

Tips for teaching preschoolers how to bead without a needle

First things first: only do this with close supervision and kids who won’t misuse the materials (such as mouthing the beads or wrapping the string around their neck.

Teaching them the process for threading the string through the bead

The way I did this was as follows: I showed the kids to hold the string about an inch from the end. They obviously didn’t do that exactly but that was a great starting point.

Hold the string so that it doesn’t flop down – it sticks out. Now in the other hand, show them to hold the bead between their thumb and index finger so that the thumb is on bottom and the index on top – and they are NOT covering the holes. They then thread the string through until the bead bumps their finger. They let go of the bead, catch the other side of the string with the bead hand and use the string hand for the bead, to slide it down.

It might sound overcomplicated but the kids got it with the visual, and after a few tries they caught on to a motion that we might expect to come naturally but doesn’t necessarily.

Troubleshooting their beadings kills

Some of the kids had trouble with the first two, and breaking down what’s required for successful beading will help you show them where to improve – which is why it’s so important.

The most common issues kids face when beading:

• The string flops – they need to know to hold it close enough to the end that the string end is stiff enough to stay mostly horizontal, but not so close that they can’t comfortably string it. You’ll show that to them.
• They’re covering the bead hole – While it might seem natural to us to hold a bead a certain way, these kids are still developing their coordination skills. Demonstrating this to them will allow them to be aware of them, and showing them the proper way gives them a starting point.
• Switching from stringing to sliding down – Again, this is a coordination issue that can be taught. When they first try, they tend to let go of the string first and it slides out. Show them to let go of the bead and quickly grab the string.

This process had a 100% success rate in teaching my preschool girls how to bead making for an incredibly successful beading activity for preschoolers.

Materials you choose for a beading activity for preschoolers are important

The materials you use can make all the difference.

There are a few notes to make with materials:

• String – three qualities you need: it should be stiff enough that when you hold it about an inch or two from the end it doesn’t droop, it should have end that don’t fray easily, and it should hold a knot. With the group, I used beading elastic – the kind made from multiple strands, not the crystal kind. You can use different types of cord and string as long as they have these qualities and aren’t too thick.
• Beads – They should be large enough for young kids to grasp (at least 8mm), with a large enough hole to make stringing forgiving (2 mm can work, 4mm or larger is recommended). This kit is a fabulous starter kit, or just go for pony beads (a bit less of a challenge.)
• Starter – You’ll need something to tie on as a blocker. I don’t recommend using traditional blockers as they can be pulled off by kids. Use half a clasp tied on or a bead, but make sure it’s secure. You can even glue the knot in advance.

How to run a beading activity for preschoolers

Materials

• String – I’ve done this with preschoolers with beading elastic and this cording.
• Optional: plastic clasps
• Large hole bead – pony beads are a great starter bead.
• Scissors
• Patience 🙂

How to make the necklace

I always have my hands full when heading out with the kids, and tracking the keys becomes a chore. This beaded wristlet actually looks like a bracelet when I’m using it, because it’s so fabulous!

Of course, you can use the beaded wristlet keychain to hold a handbag or device, or anything you want to attach a wrist strap to. Use it for safety keychains as well.

These are a testament to how little details can really upgrade a jewelry making project – because those metal spacers really give it edge!

Choosing beads for your beaded wristlet keychain

The beads on this one are everything, and I chose to use flat clay beads – mainly because I bought a box and wanted to try them! The colors are gorgeous, muted tones with a matte finish. That makes it look classy but is so affordable and lightweight too.

The only downside of using clay beads for your beaded wristlet keychain is that it can get a bit rough-feeling. It’s not actually going to scratch you but it’s not exactly plush. But I’m happy with it.

Don’t use anything too delicate (like crystals) – this beaded wristlet keychain gets some bangin’ around! More great options are:

• Silicone beads – these will be much more comfortable on the wrist and utilitarian.
• Wood beads – they are lightweight and affordable but have an organic and wholesome look.
• Fuzzy beads – if you can find furry beads, go for it! It won’t last as long, but it’ll feel like a fashion statement each time you wear it.
• Gemstone beads – these are actually quite hardy and give you a really upscale accessory.
• Acrylic beads – while not my first choice for jewelry, this IS an accessory, and chunky faceted acrylic beads definitely have a vibe.

Go for a size that’s 6-8mm or larger in width and make it pretty!

For the spacers, I chose metal beads of the same shape to blend right in. Go for something that works with what YOU’RE using.

How to make a beaded wristlet keychain

Supplies

• Clay beads
• Flat discs spacers in gold
• 20mm beading wire (don’t cheap out on this – get a strong one)
• Pliers: chain nose, round nose, cutters
• Jumbo lobster claw with keychain hardware

Process

1. Start by making a wrapped loop at the end of your wire. You can learn how to do that in this post featuring basic techniques for jewelry crafts. You want to wrap this loop, even if the wire would “hold” without because it gets lots of wear – you want something secure.

2. Measure a length of wire that’ll fit around the widest part of your hand plus a few inches, and snip it off the spool.

3. Start beading! I found it easiest to use the unlooped end of the wire as a needle and picking up the beads with that.

Add spacers in random spots or following a specific pattern.

4. Bead until you’ve reached your desired length – it should fit comfortably over the widest party of your hand.

5. Create a second wrapped loop at the other end.

6. Trim off the excess wire, and tuck in any sharp ends.

7. Thread on the keychain end of your key fob, just as you would a keychain!

Your beaded wristlet keychain is complete!

DIY Beaded Wristlet Keychain

A daisy chain beaded bracelet is a fun first beading project for kids and tweens – and this name or initial version is just so much better! This blog post was created in partnership with Horizon Group USA and Craft Project Ideas.

Kids and tweens love learning new “real” skills and beading is a favorite first. But did you know that there is a beading technique that’s so simple even young kids can master it?

As a tween, I loved making daisy chain beaded bracelets. It feels good to know a “trick” beyond just straight line beading.

So if your tween is ready to learn a new beading skill, these daisy chain beaded bracelets are a score!

And just to add a fun little extra flair, we turned these into name bracelets. Eva and Naya both have short names, so we used their full name. You can also stick to initials!

All the supplies we needed, besides for some tape to seal the end (or tape it to a surface) and scissors were in Horizon’s Just My Style Ultimate Jewelry Center.

You have a huge variety of beads in very classic shapes to give you versatile crafting supplies.

The Ultimate Jewelry Center is a really fantastic open-ended craft kit. It’s got great ideas included (and yes, the basic daisy chain – without the name – is featured in the instruction booklet!)

And for the ultimate in customization: there are blank circle beads with decals you can add. So if you’re not finding the letters you want in the colors you want, you can make them!

Just like many jewelry making projects for kids, daisy chain beaded bracelets can be open-ended from the bead colors, shapes, and accents you use! The Ultimate Jewelry Center comes with different finishes, bicones and round, translucent and opaque beads… all of which can be used to make these.

We also switched  between placing all the name beads together and interspersing them between the daisies. I only recommend the second option if you’re doing initials, as it doesn’t really read smoothly when it’s on the wrist.

This daisy chain beaded bracelet uses an elastic (which you get plenty of in your kit) so it can easily slide  on and off. It’s is a great way to bead for younger children, who won’t have the dexterity to close clasps on their own, and who might want a little break from their bling.

What you need to make these

How to make a beaded daisy chain bracelet

1: Sort your beads in the lid of the Ultimate Jewelry Center. Choose a color for your center, petals, and accent.

The center and petal beads should be small, but make sure they’re the same size.

2: Plan beads for your name or initials too. For example, use sticker and the flat beads to spell out “Eva,” or use square alphabet beads to spell out “Naya.” Then, cut a piece of elastic about two feet long. Tape it down to your work surface.

3: Thread a few of your accent color beads.

4: Continue the pattern by threading on 4 petal beads and then a center bead.

5: Take the end of your elastic. Thread it back through the first petal bead, from the direction that the elastic exited when you first added it, towards the accent beads. 

6: Pull the elastic tight so that the petal beads start forming a circle around the center bead. 

Thread on another 2 petal beads.

7: Thread your elastic back through the bottom petal bead. 

8: Pull the elastic until those last 2  petals sit around the center to form your first daisy!

9: Add another accent bead. Repeat Steps 4-8 to add another daisy and then add another accent bead.

10: Thread on your name or initials.

11: Finish off with an accent bead, a daisy, an accent bead, a daisy, and three accent beads.

If your bracelet isn’t big enough, just add more accent beads to the end. Or remove the end accent beads, slide your design over, and add more daisies! 

Just make sure to place a piece of paper tape at the end of your elastic that you’re not working on so  that the beads don’t fall off.

12: Knot your elastic tightly and trim it to complete your bracelet! Ask an adult to dab a bit of glue to the knot to make it more secure.

Tip:  Vary your pattern! Place daisies between each letter bead if you’re larger beads or spelling out a longer name.

Metal beads make beaded bangles look SO classy! Use small beads in different tones for a WOW look – it’s elegant, it’s got a touch of quirky, and it’s easy and fun to stack and wear!

Here I made one bangle using mixed metals in both matte and glossy finishes, and another using matte copper beads in different shapes.

Last time I did this, I used simple round spacer beads on one and matte antique-style square beads on the other. Both looks are amazing. But if you’re sticking with silver beads, definitely go with something simple that has a touch of character, like hte square beads!

I used a clasp because I have, well… a big hand. A big hand and a small wrist, which don’t match well with bangles. So I put on a clasp that’s somewhat subtle. It does break up the whole clean-ness of it, but it doesn’t show much and it DOES make it much easier to wear.

In this tutorial, I’ll teach you how to make beaded bangles with clasps. You can try to expand the size a little and make it without a clasp.

Variate the style of your beads to make your bangles perfect for stacking! They also stack beautifully with other bangles and beads. I’ve stacked the copper beaded one with other copper bangles and the mixed metal with wider leather bracelets.

Learn how to make beaded bangles to give out as gifts or keep for yourself. They’re:

1. Inexpensive to make
2. Quick to make
3. An impressive gift!

Simple beaded bangles also look amazing as standalone bracelets, with a delicate, minimalist feel.

What you need to make simple beaded bangles:

• Wire – thicker is better. Try for 18 gauge, but if that won’t work, use 20 gauge. A thicker wire (lower number) will hold the bangle shape better, but it needs to fit through your bead. Choose a wire color that works with your beads (copper, silver…)

• Small beads – Across the bracelets I made I used:
  • 4mm round beads
  • 4mm cubes
  • Assorted matte rose gold hematite
  • 3mm round mixed metals
• A clasp – one or two sided. Just make sure it goes will with your bangle – it’ll show! The copper one I made – you can learn how to make wire jewelry clasps here!
• Pliers – round nose, needle nose, and side cutter. I recommend nylon coated pliers instead of serrated jaws so you don’t mark your wire if working with precious metals (such as copper).

How to make beaded bangles:

1. Bend back.

Bend back the tip of your wire about 8mm – or enough to form a comfortably sized loop.

2. Form loop

Using the round nose pliers, curl it inward from the tip to form a loop.

3. String

String your beads onto the wire until you’re satisfied with the length. Since this is a stiff bangle, you don’t want it to be too tight, but you want it to be small enough to remain comfortable and not slip off (especially if you’re using a clasp).

4. Finish & Shape

Create a second basic loop when you’re done. First trim it to size, leaving 8mm. Leave a little slack – don’t pull the beads tight. Then bend the wire back and form the loop. Shape your bangle using your fingers to form a smooth oval.

5. Clasp

Attach your clasp! You can use a simple spring ring clasp or lobster claw, and hook it right onto the opposite loop or add a jumpring or chain. I used a DIY s-hook clasp for my copper one and hooked it right onto the other end. Because my bangle is the right size, it doesn’t slip off.

You have successfully learned how to make beaded bangles! They are ready to wear or to gift.

Of all the jewelry crafts out there, DIY bracelets are my favorite, and it all started with friendship bracelets!

But it doesn’t end now that I’m supposedly “grown up” (or so they say). I still love friendship bracelets. Last year, I made this zig zag friendship bracelet pattern that I actually first created as a teen and finished it off using ribbon crimps and a clasp to make a “real” bracelet.

Today, I’m so excited to teach you how to make a beaded friendship bracelet using a very basic knot that looks so sophisticated – but it’s really, really easy. I finished mine off with cord ends and a clasp.

You can also use techniques such as a loop and button to finish off your bracelet. A sliding knot is cool but doesn’t work so well with multi-strand bracelets like this one.

Which thread or string should you use to make beaded friendship bracelets?

Because beads tend to come with smaller holes, more appropriate for wire or beading materials, it can be hard to use your regular embroidery floss that you’d use for friendship bracelets.

You have two options:

1. Use a thinner thread
2. Use large-hole beads.

Even large-hole wooden beads, which is what I’d normally choose, can be hard to thread over two strands of embroidery floss. You can use a single strand in the center but you’ll be missing out on some of the prettiness.

To demonstrate the different results you can get, I decided to teach you how to make a beaded friendship bracelet three ways.

In the first, I used regular embroidery floss, with pony beads in the center. These beads are slightly smaller than your typical pony beads. The holes are nice and big and you can fit multiple strands through. It’s not as elegant, but perfect for kids looking to make fun beaded friendship bracelets.

In the second, I used a thinner and gorgeous DMC size 8 Pearl Cotton thread. I used this with 4mm metal beads, and since the thread is a good quality, it held as I strung two threads through the hole. The result was a bit thin – maybe a touch more delicate than I wanted it.

In the final one, I tried doubling the end/working strands of the DMC size 8 with the metal beads. This is my final recommended project for those looking to make an elegant, grown-up macrame bracelet.

I will teach you how to make a beaded friendship bracelet using a pattern of ten stitches and then a bead – but play around! Do more frequent beads, do beads only in the center of your bracelet, or do them in clusters of three.

3. You are going to treat the two strands on the left as one, and the two on the right as one. Take your left strands and make a forward knot around your center strands.

4. Take the same strands and make a backward knot around the center strands so that you end up where you started.

5. Take the right two strands and start with a backward knot around the center strands. Then make a forward knot around your center knots, bringing the right strands back to their starting point.

6. Repeat and make ten such knots – 5 of each color.

7. Slide a bead over the center two strands and bring it up to your knots.

8. Repeat the process and create a forward/backward knot with your left strand, tightening it under the bead, holding the bead in place. Create a backward/forward knot with your right strand and repeat for ten stitches.

9. Continue this process until your bracelet is complete! Knot to secure.

10. Close off your bracelet however you’d like – I used ribbon crimps and clasps.

Make one, make five to stack, send them to your friends and family!

If you’ve ever been an aspiring jeweler, you’ll know just how quickly the beads can take over. They come in such an awesome variety, that you simply can’t help stocking up on every. single. type of bead.

Over time, I’ve made things with beads that are NOT jewelry. I gathered some other things to make with beads from various bloggers, and the result is this amazing collection. It just proves that beads should be a staple in every craft closet – not just those who make jewelry. 

You will notice a pattern. Most of these things to make with beads use a few specific types of beads: pony beads, Perler beads, and wooden beads in various shapes, colors, and sizes. That’s probably because they are the most frugal for crafting, but they can also be the most versatile.

Try substituting some out for glass or other beads. You don’t need to stick to the given bead type, and sometimes swapping pony beads for eclectic glass beads adds so much character to your project!

Regardless, the three types of beads I mentioned above should DEFINITELY be found in every craft closet, for their versatility, and the endless options they lend to crafting.

18 THINGS TO MAKE WITH BEADS – THAT AREN’T JEWELRY!

Things to make with glass or gemstone beads:

Glass and gemstone beads are your “typical” jewelry making beads that you might have way too many of. These ideas were created for that type of bead specifically, but most of the ideas on this list can be made using glass or gemstone beads.

1. Stemware Charms

Perfect for a winter party, a holiday event, or a New Year’s bash, these are so stupid simple to make! Making just one or two won’t bust your whole stash, but if you make them for a big event, you’ll definitely use up a lot of your beads.

2. DIY napkin rings:

I used large gemstone beads to make these elegant copper napkin rings. They really didn’t take long to put together and have been the talk of many a dinner!

3. Bookmarks:

Who said bookmarks can’t be super classy? This Beaded Linen Twine Bookmark by Happy Hour Projects will make you want to keep on reading (magazines, if you’re like me…)

4. Beaded Spider

This beaded spider by The Crafty Blog Stalker is perfect for Halloween, or any time of year of you love spiders… This is the grown-up version.

Things to make with Pony beads:

Pony beads might be reminiscent of preschool beading projects, but they’re also fantastic for other crafting projects. These things to make with beads show you how versatile the inexpensive plastic beads can be.

5. Beaded Spider:

And here’s the kiddie version of the spider, using pony beads! It’s easier for kids to thread pipe cleaners than other materials, and they get to develop those fine motor skills too.

6. Pony Bead Lizards

These friendly pony Bead Lizards by Sugar Bee Crafts are a perfect summer camp craft! Or, make them in the winter to look forward to warmer weather.

7. Pony Bead Fish

8. Beaded Snakes

9. Beaded Wind Chimes:

 Beaded Wind Chimes by Happy Hooligans are hard to make NOT come out great! I love how she combined it with upcycled materials, making it a true “craft with what you have” project.

Things to make with wooden beads:

Wooden beads are super cheap to buy, very lightweight, and easy to glue, giving your things to make with beads a new dimension. They are also easy to write on and paint on, and have an organic look to them.

10. Name Keychains:

We made these fun name keychains as a class gift for M’s whole class and they loved them! You can sub gimp or another thick thread for the embroidery floss if you want something stronger.

11. Tetris Magnets

 Tetris inspired magnets are easier to make than you think! And they look so great on your fridge, locker, or given as a gift.

12. Hashtag Magnets:

Or use the same technique to make hashtag magnets!

13. DIY Trivet:

Make these DIY trivets as a last minute fix when guests are on the way, or make ’em cuz you love ’em. These are so easy to make, your three year old can help.

14. Hungry Caterpillar Bead and Pipe Cleaner Craft:

15. Cork character magnets:

Add loads of personality to these cork character magnets! You’ll want to make a dozen at least. These things to make with beads show you how to make use of beads as supplementary elements to glue onto different projects.
